Social Studies Department All students who expect to hr graduated muM, by state law successfully complete a two year course in I nitcd States history. This course begins with our European backgrounds and ends with current American History. The faculty of the social studies department is concerned with the problems of understanding how democratic processes of government developed in this country and the political, cultural and social progress made by each succeeding American generation. Students who participate fully in our program learn not only the rights and privileges of citizenship, hut the duties, responsibilities and obligations as well. The social studies department also offers a year course in World History. This course serves to acquaint our students with the progress and contributions to world civilization of our fellow nations and also helps us to understand the role of our country in the stream of world history. Finally our department offers a course in the study of the problems of group living. |»olitieal parties, and the structure of our local, state and national governments. This year's long course, the newest addition to our offerings, is called “Civics . We are also looking forward to the re-introduction of courses in International Relations and Economics. Science Department Mr. Salkin (liowing lODir “rock 'I hr atudy of science is a practical, profitable, and often fascinating expenditure of time, life's most precious commodity. This pursuit gives (to quote Mr. Paul llaesler, Chairman of the department) “Better understanding of your surroundings and more comprehension of animals and plants.” Science gives knowledge to improve health and prolong life. The study of mechanics, light, electricity, and sound can Iw covered, as well as that of “space” and time, fascinating can the crust of the earth become with its soil (rich or arid); its rivers anil lakes, it fiery volcanoes and gorgeous waterfalls; and its wealth of vegetables and trees above, minerals and precious stones below the surface. Technical Department The Industrial Art or Technical Department, according to its chairman, Mr. Joseph Ram, offers, “A program to train our young people in the knowledge, understanding and skill necessary for economic and social competence in our expanding and changing society—placing special emphasis upon training these young | eople to cam a livelihood in an industrial community.” The courses given include: Electric! tv. Through experience with art forms and various art media, the student improve hi visual perception and understanding. The courses available at Central include: painting, graphics, architecture, fashion design, illustration, industrial design, technical art. advertising, and lettering—-as well as art history. Mr. Stark says “The student of art gains confidence through accomplishment.
