Teenage in the time for questioning, for eurionitv. Knowledge, at thin stage, can he very satisfying. A hoy who solves a difficult mathematics problem feels proud of result; so does the one who fixes an elcetrie switch. The girl who can type is glad she learned the u c of a machine which enables her to present her work in a businesslike fashion. Glad, too, is she to have a skill to ofTer in the industrial world. The pupils who have learned to speak clearly, pul on a panel discussion or a play, have fun at rehearsal and a feeling of warmth and achievement when the applause greets their efforts. High level of learning brings justified pride in seeing names on honor rolls. Learning words and music to a song has paid off in a public appearance; the painting of attractive pictures has been rewarded by an exhibit. Acquiring the art of playing an instrument well on the stage or on the field brings pleasure to the musician ami to those who listen. learning the rules of the game and the spirit of competition gives emotional satisfaction to both performer and spectator. From any facet of education (with its wide variety of curriculum and extra-curricular activity) can come happiness of a quiet, personal sort or of a big. shared type. We wish him and the whole class a most liappv, wonderful future from to Z. 81 Class of e were rather Miiall four years ago when we came to the doors of Central; hut they let iis in. anyway. They knew we would row. How sonic of us did! After getting lost a dozen times, we became settled eventually. We were here to learn and that's what most of us started to do. (A few set out for fun and managed to have it all these years.) Two of the language teachers we have had retired, Mrs. I.itch and Mr. Scnnerchio. We found assignments were longer and the work in general was a little harder; hut. to our surprise, June came and one year was ended. Sophomore year saw additional pupils enter the class ranks. Like us, they came from all sections of the city. It looked as if we would have a very large graduation class indeed. The new ones found the building large and rooms hard to find. Some of the class will leave without ever having been in either a basement or a tower room. Many have never seen rooms 16, 18, 515 nor 526. The upper classmen continued to offer us elevator tickets. Some of the class were active in athletic events. One hoy made the top five on the basketball team. We started joining more clubs. Near the end of the term, some were accepted in foreign language societies. By junior year, we found our place in Central. W e participated in various assembly programs. Socially, too. we began to step out. Very successful was our Junior Dance Affair. This year, we went on a few field trips. We preferred these to the classroom. One of our better students in mathematics was the highest scorer in the city-wide test—of course, Tabitha Smith. Several were now making the honor rolls; others, like Katliv Jordon, were having both fun and high marks. Some juniors were invited to become members of. the English and also the National Honor Society. Well established now. socially, athletically, scholastically, we looked forward happily. V cloud marred the sky, though. Betty Clark, a lovely fellow student, passed away. Shocked and saddened, we learned early that we have to lose friends. In junior year, there was a real boost in our morale and sense of achievement. For the basketball team, this season marked the pinnacle. Centralites shot points upon points, game after game. Opponents were left walloped and weeping. Basket after basket found us screaming until we were hoarse. With the wonderful taste of victory, Mr. Lombardi’s BOYS captured the City and State Championships. Scholastically, we were in good shape. W e were evaluated and given a good rating by the Middle States Committee. Among the fine examples of performing arts were the Spring Festival, the skits and plays under 82 1965's History Mr. Young's direction, the works of art displayed, and the attractive fashion show. Remember those dresses and Easter suits the girls wore (self made in 2231? We learned the satisfaction, too. of money in the bank. Rooms 401 and 415 often won. A wonderful show of parent interest was the faithful attendance at all •'antes of Dwayne Cressinger’s father. in senior year, we were feeling really proud. We had come a long way; but, now, that diploma did not seem nearly so elusive. A few had to double in subjects, but most of us found we would be able to jump this final hurdle if we really tried. Even the fun lovers seemed to take on a more serious air. This year, one of our popular classmates and football players met with a very dreadful accident. That awful Saturday a snowstorm caused Michael Mitchell’s brother to go into a skid and hit a tree, demolishing the car ami causing the loss of Mike’s left eye. Fortunately, an East Orange police car was near. The prompt help of the officers plus the weeks of wonderful care at East Orange General Hospital -coupled with Mike’s own cooperation—are all responsible for his return to us. Gosh, were we glad to see him! We join Mike in gratitude to them all. Miss Aduhato secured lesson plans from the various teachers and relayed them to Michael’s grateful mother. The Board of Education supplied home instruction. How we ever secured all the senior glossy prints for tlie yearbook neither we nor the Lorstan-Tliomas studio will ever know. The senior prom, held this year in the Robert Treat Hotel was (as a I commercial would say I “indescribably delicious”. The beautiful room with its decorations, the lovely, lingering melodies from the band, the gorgeous lights blended in harmony with the flawless suits and brilliant gowns, as we whirled and whirled around the dance floor. The event is past, but it contributed a large piece of happiness for future days, when we will want to remember the pleasant times of our teens. All these incidents of the last four years are behind us, but the memory of them (and, perhaps, a few not recorded here) will cling long after that wonderful June night of 1965’s Commencement. To it, we look forward with a real spirit of achievement—yet, with such mixed emotions. Geraldine George Juanita Murphy Ann Mitchell 2. Sanuit‘1 How aril 4. Kathleen .Ionian 5. Tahitha Smith 6. Streamers flowing, shaking, blowing in the wind, the gay music of the hand ushered in another football season. The many pictures on the following pages bear witness to events: the team as a whole (quite a good-sized whole) ; the various players, individually photoed; and the numerous types of action that went on in the many games. Aside from the players and the actual | crforinance, there is the entire panoramic effect. The fact that fall arrives seems to say football is in the air. Those who cannot take part on the field do so in other capacities. Lovely sound and sight are contributed by the twirlers and cheerleaders to whom “belonging to the sport seems to make happy. By their presence, game after game, and by their lusty yells, the spectators both contributed and shared in one of the most vibrant of sports seasons — football. Coach Brown and Assistant Coach Adams. The 1961-65 Football Team. 108 The Swimming Team Swimming The swimming team Inis been very successful this year in the eye of the Blue Devil . The team has succeeded in conquering it arch rival. South Side, twice this year, a it has done many times in the years past. We owe many of our wins to our coach, Mr. Williams, who has done a great deal in improving the team, during the three year he hus been in Central. Swimming is not an easy sport. It takes devotion, endurance, and ability to become a fine swimmer. This means that you have to work hard and practice every day if you expect to achieve this goal. The present team has developed two fine swimmers, Leroy Miller anil Elliot Simmons. These hoys were this year's co-captains. They have been on the swimming team since they entered Central as freshmen. Ernest Thomas, who is also a senior and a fine swimmer, has made great contributions to the team, during his stay at Central. Nice and ea y. Basketball Don Park jump high (or Central and for that basket! A wonderful basketball season finished just short of Atlantic City. The team anti the school would have heen thrilled to have had it “all the way”: but, we have a lot to be proud of this season. The Co-Captains were mighty pleased with Aikins anti I.ott at one time: with Hall ami Parks at another. Cureton was both a valuable ami a happy player. I ntlerclassmen showed fine sports ability ami an up and coming strength. Taking a random sampling of four games, this is the type of result: December 23 Seton Hall — Central Won February 9 Central — Irvington Won February 12 Essex Catholic — Central Lost March 9 Central—West Orange Won Of this year's hoys, three placed on ‘All City Team”, a very creditable showing: one, on the first team: two, on the others. Soccer is a rough game, but they measured up to its rigorous demands. Vi e are justly proud of our two, excellent victories. Although three boys in our photo are seniors of the 1965 class, the team is made up predominantly of sophomores. This means that Central can look forward hopefully, in the next couple of years, to seasons with more victories in them, as the boys and their skills develop. The other Soccer Team members are: Davall, Gilbert, Harper, Henry, Ingram. Josev, Maxey, More. Kunkin. Ransom, Robinson, Searcy, Watson and Yut. Coach Smith with the Soccer Team. New to the field of Central sports activities is our Wrestling Team. Nevertheless, these boys acted this year as though they were veterans. Each of the team members displayed interest and endurance. This was equally true from the lightest weight, James Davis, to the heavy man, Frank Jennings. Anyone who saw the team member lugging those big, blue mats, in the late afternoon hours, knew they meant business. The very first match of the season resulted in Central's winning an excellent 19 victory over South Side's 31. Mr. P. Curry is the coach of the new Wrestling Team. The Captain is Alfred Davall and Ernest Phillips is Co-Captain. Other mat men include: lx ui Jennings, Kenneth Jones, Winton Hill, Donald Rankins. Joe Yut. Also, not to be confuted with Winton, there is Winston Hill: and besides Frank, there is Ix uis Jennings. Believe it or not, the team included a tiny fellow, with lots of nerve, ‘X) pound Gerald King. Still others are Michael Barrett and Wayne Chapman. Mike provided a highlight of the season bv winning the title of Central first Wrestling Team. City Champion, in his weight class, which is 127.
