I was tolil to write this autobiography mi that you ooulil yet acquainted with me because I'm supposed to In “typical. , I didn't want to write it lierause. well. I'm kind of modest and shy. and liesides I've only written ainiut six compositions in my life so it's going to lie kind of hard. Hut anyway, here goes. Let's set now. Oh yes, I was born. I was a cute fat baby like all of you. I ate u lot und slept u lot and spilled inv baby food all over everything and everyone, including myself. und pounded on my high chair and got colds. My mother watched television a lot so she knew just whut to do. She cleaned up the floor with that Blue Hurricane, she rubhed me all over with M icks Yupo Wuh when I had a cold, and she washed my clothes in her washer with the giant in it. By the time I was in the fifth grade. I iiegan to hear aiiout Central High. You've got to have an ambition or you'll die so they say. So my ambition was to go to Central. Hut I lived pretty far away. One day, though, when I was in junior high school, I was walking down Halsey Street and a guy sold me a magic carpet for u buck fifty. It was just what I had always wanted. Mv mother wanted to clean it right away with the newest all purpose detergent, but I hid the carpet. I was afraid she might wash the magic right out of it. One September morning, in 1960, I took my notebook, got on my carpet and off I went to Central High. I landed on the untenna and they got ull upset down in the office because they didn't have any students who used magic carpets. They said that if I was going to come to Central I would huve to take a bus and they gave me bus tickets. I tried the curpet again, though, the next day, und at school they sure put me on the carpet and it wasn't magic either. 1 got scolded so hard that ull tliut year I slunk when I pussed a certain door. I never used my carpet uguin. Soon after that, a fellow in the locker room sold me an elevator pass for a dollar and thirty-seven cents. The first 64 lime I tried to line it there was a whole gang of teachers ntnndiiiK at the elevator laughing and talking. When they saw me with my pass, they laughed some more and pointed at me. When I tried to get on the elevator they threw me off and took my pass away. That year. I got to know Chris Washington and Sidney Smith. They tried to set me right and smooth off my rough edges. We spent a lot of time with Mr. Stark trying. They took me to u football game and I saw a cheerleader for the first time. Hoy, I bounced with joy! That was the end of my freshman year. Oh yes. I passed everything. The next year I went out for football. One day at practice I rushed up to block a kick und I did—right on my jaw and on my nose. That winter. I took up basketball and joined the choristers. I was so good ut basketball that the coach made me keep score. That wasn't bad. though. lie-cause I went to all the games free. loiter, in the spring. I ran track. That was really good because I learned to run fast and that would help if I wanted to run away from somebody. So ended my sophomore year. Oh, I forgot. I went to Washington with sonic schoolmates. Very educational and all that jazz. We got out of u day at school. My junior year. I figured I'd better start studying. I went on another trip, this time to Princeton; and I decided to go PETER PETE O brave neic irorld, That has such people in't! there—not just on a trip. Man. what a basketball season we had that year. We won the City league Championship, the Essex County Tournament, the Croup IV, Section 2. and the Croup IV North Jersey Championships, apd finally, the New Jersey State Croup IV crown at Atlantic City. .My senior year. Chris. Sidney and I were together all the time. You might say they made me what I am today. Just liefore Christmas vacation a hunch of us senior boys came in wearing those wide loud ties. Hoy, that was double plus stuff. And later on. we all dressed up for Nutionul Hum Week. I could hardly wait for haskelhall season to see the team in action again. We were having another fine season and by the end of February the team had won the City Lcugue Championship and the Essex County Coaches Association Holiday Festival. Its winning streak had reached 41 games over a period of two years until mean old South Side ended it in the rliumpiomdiip game of the Essex County Tournament. Hut the Ikjvs still hail a chance of repeating as State Champs. This is no time to leave off. but the publisher says that I have to hand this in right uwuy. I'll sec you at the prom ami on the senior trip. 65 Front Hair: S. Wmlr, I . Weston, G. Grrcn. S. Mwlfy, M. Karon. G. Ilalrbrr. Second Rmr: I.. Wr-lon. J. Dunran, S. Adam . I- Dorirr. M. Jene AUton Wfiat I Will Miss After Graduation l.v FRANK POTUTO Understandably there are certain individual who believe graduation to be the Red Cron and the Salvation Army rolled into one. Feeling that the continual grind of school-day life i deferred for the present, they look forward to morning of sleep, afternoon of leisure, and night of entertainment. Thi dream, though, is dissipated upon their initiation into everyday life, and they soon find themselves looking hack on the “good old days ’ when they went to school. Even though they feel harshly toward school now, in the future there will doubtless he those instances when a meeting with an old acquaintance will bring hack happy memories. Upon those occasion they will trTum-phantly proclaim that the present generation is a li tless group and that in their day things were different. Thi is to he expected. Obviously, there are people, activities, and surrounding which we shull all miss, the classrooms, the teachers, the friend . Personally, though, I will miss much more than this. Time is the thing that I will look hack on regretfully, 'l ime is the most precious thing that we or any generation can have. There was the time I used so unwisely wondering about school corridors when I could have been studying for my not too distant future. I here was also the time in which I did do some constructive work, only to realize later that it was hut a fraction of what could have been done. Ye , time is something we all heed very little, hut something which swiftly leaves us amid the chaos of each day. I have suddenly realized that although 1 wasted a great ileal of potentially useful lime while in school, possibly now in my coming adult life I can use to full udvuntagc every minute ufforiled me. 75 After I graduate from Central High School, there will he a number of things that I will mitt . First, there i the building itself. For the past four yearn, I have come to thin building every morning with the feeling of coming to a second home to spend the day with some of my family. Walking through the lialln of Central warmn me all over, especially those on the first floor. There seems to he a connecting factor of friendliness, understanding, and willingness to help running from one student to the next. I will mins the friendly buzz of the cafeteria. There, aside from eating, students are given an opportunity to relax, tulk over morning incidents, and prepare for the remaining classes of the duy. I will also miss the study periods in the cafeteria. I guess it is Im'cuusc of the atmosphere created by so many people working together quietly. I will miss the wonderful assembly programs that we have in our auditorium. They are warming and inspirational and another one of the many things that make me proud to Ik- a part of Central High. I will miss rheerleading too, especially for our basketball team. Not just because the team is a good one, but because I didn't have to sneak home in my uniform after the game as I did during the football season. These are the things that I will miss most after I leave Central High School, where I have received training to make me a better person and citizen. What I Will Miss Most by CAROLYN McNATT 76 Iteing faced with graduation. n proapcrllvf alumnus may muM , “What will I miss in os I alto ul Central? There are many things that I will miss. I'|| mis rushing through the halts between classes ami the good times in the cafeteria. One of the little known | uslinies that 1 11 miss will he sitting in the auditorium window early Wednesday morning, listening to Mr. Lundie (day the organ. I’ll miss the exhausting climh from the basement to the fifth floor after an air raid drill. 1 11 miss the happy times of the 1962 63 and 1963 64 basketball seasons as compared with the frustrating football seasons. Two of the things that 1 11 really miss will be my homeroom and my homeroom teacher. I have been in the same homeroom with the same cluss and the same teacher during my four years at Central. 1 11 miss the many other teachers, too. that did their best to give me an education. I will miss my many friends at Central. Chances are that 1 11 never see any of them again. 1 11 miss sitting around the flagpole in front of the school, laughing and talking with them during lunchtime. 1 11 miss marching into the auditorium to the tune of the “Hattie Hymn of the Republic as so many seniors have done before me and will continue to do after me. Speaking of tin auditorium. I know that 1 11 always remember listening to the songs sung by the drls dee Club ami the Choristers. All of these things, bundled into one, will comprise the thing that 1 will miss most- Central High School itself— Our Dear Lady on the Hill.
