x JANUARY eodobj aRTHUI CENTRAL COMMERCIAL HIGH school NEWARK. SEW ERSEY PUBLISHED THE CL AS JUNE 1963 CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL NEWARK, NEW JERSEY • - Tliis is Central Hidli Scliool worJ e GROUP IV State Championship Where We Played ATLANTIC CITY MARCH 23, 1963 'fM Dedication On February 1,1912, Central High School first opened its doors. It was considered a structure of great beauty and was decorated with carefully designed carvings and gargoyles, which have watched over the school ever since. The first class was graduated on June 28 of the same year thus establishing Central’s reputation as an institution of secondary education. In her fifty-one years, Central has accomplished much. She has had many loyal and competent graduates who have adequately upheld the traditions on which their Alma Mater was founded. In this respect, we hope, our class will do no less than they did. So, with sincere best wishes for her future, we, the Class of June ’63 dedicate this yearbook to Central High School, a place which will remain forever in our hearts as, Our Lady on the Hill.” 9 Contents Page 11 ADMINISTRATION Page 15 FACULTY Page 25 SENIORS Page 81 SPORTS Page 91 ACTIVITIES Page 101 10 ADVERTISING dministratio Mr. Albert 1) Angell, Jr. TO MR. These youngsters were the nucleus of the Class of ’63, and had come to Central to receive a special education slanted toward the sciences. This experimental program was conceived and supervised by Mr. Arnold Strassberg, the Chairman of the Mathematics Department. CHAPTER II Ami the Lord spake unto Moses saying, Make thee two trumpets of silver; . . . that thou mayest use them for the calling of the assembly” ... —Number X, i, ii In September of 1960 and February of 1961 the sophomore class arrived, three hundred strong. This in itself made the sophomore year a memorable one. In addition, Newark received visits from the two candidates for the presidency of the United States, and Central tied a football game. The new arrivals came from all sections of the city and elected to follow a wide variety of courses. Little by little the members of the class, having learned the location of their classrooms, settled down, and most of them got to work. They also learned that the elevator was not for them, and that a tower room was a mere three minute run from the basement, unless they met some friends along the way. During the year a number of our classmates participated in auditorium programs, athletic events, and special trips to the UN and Fort Monmouth to mention two. Some of our friends were already showing outstanding scholastic ability, athletic prowess, and the ability to lead in the right direction. Thus ended the sophomore year. CHAPTER III A mystic bond of brotherhood makes all men one. —Thomas Carlyle The junior year is the year in which a group must mature and acquire a feeling of unity which resembles a state of nationalism in its intensity. Although it is not apparent to the casual glance, it is obvious that such a feeling exists somewhere in the depths of the subconscious of every member of the class. This feeling of comradeship was encouraged by the first class meeting called by Mr. Matarazzo, our Class Adviser, and by the election of officers which was held later in the year. The members of the class learned, too, that there would be no more January graduations, and that the students who entered in February would have to accelerate to be graduated in June 1963, or slow down and spend an extra term in Central. Some of the wise members of the class had attended summer school and had gained extra credits, and many carried heavy schedules also to permit early graduation. An outstanding event of the year was a trip to Washington which was so contagiously confused that even the bus driver got lost on his way back to Newark. This made the ride last a little longer, but no one complained about the additional time spent in the quiet, dark bus. CHAPTER IV . . . the immortal names That were not born to die. Fitz-Greene Halleck The senior year is the last year of high school and a preamble to adulthood. What has happened in the past year that will help us shape our future? We realize that we are a most fortunate group of people to have been students at Central at this particular moment in history, and for many reasons. For the record, under the leadership of Coach Brown, Mr. Hampton, and Mr. Goolsby, the Football Team played very well. The outstanding games were those against Weequahic and Vailsburg. The Soccer Team played hard and loyally, led on by Mr. Wisot, and the Cross Country Team, coached by Mr. Lombardi, placed third in the city meet. The Indoor Track Team had a successful season under the guidance of Mr. Thomas and placed second in the state and city meets. The Central Swimming Team, coached by Mr. Young, defeated West Side for the first time in almost twenty years. As we go to press the Outdoor Track Team, guided by Mr. Thomas, and the Baseball Team, by Mr. Wisot, are doing well. Till now, though, you may wonder why we consider ourselves so fortunate. From December 1962 until March 1963, we were honored and privileged to participate vicariously in a series of events which, if interpreted properly, can be of far more value, perhaps, than any other in our high school career. We have watched a group of mild mannered, industrious, and dedicated individuals, working together under the guidance of a fine leader, achieve for themselves and their school a place in the history of Newark and the state of New Jersey. The Central Basketball Team, under Coach Matthew Lombardi (once a Central boy himself), won a city, county, sectional, regional and state championship in one year. An opposing coach, who produced a State Championship Team himself a year ago, stated that this Central Team may be the greatest ever to represent the city of Newark. Anti-climatic perhaps, but noteworthy. Central was evaluated in April by a committee of teachers representing the Middle States Association. Again we witnessed a group of people, this time administrative officials, teachers, clerks, students, cafeteria workers, custodial workers (not to mention carpenters, painters and masons) unite and work together in harmony to receive these guests and to show them Central at its best. A member of the Class of June ’63, however, recalling the events of this senior year will remember and cherish above all the story of our Basketball Team, and say to himself: “I am a member of a group whose past is glory, whose present is struggle, and whose future is victory.” Bruce Marshack W. Jennings, F. Rokins, V. Morton, W. Key, D. Bcmbry, R. Lott, Coach Matthew Lombardi. Last Will and Testament We, the Class of June, one thousand nine hundred and sixty three, of Central High School, do declare and ordain this to be our Last Will and Testament, having witnesses to the same. To Mr. Matarazzo and Mrs. Litch, we leave our gratitude for their assistance. To Mrs. Litch, we bequeath a Yearbook Staff that meets its deadlines. We give to Mr. Young a pair of elevated shoes. To Mr. Bauer, we leave a well earned retirement. To Mrs. Marie Sullivan, a broom with power steering for the Physics lab; to Mr. Cornwell an interpreter. To Dr. Galford, we leave canned laughter for his corny jokes which are really sort of funny. To Miss Dcvonald we leave a class with no problems. To Mr. Small, we bequeath a Vic Tanney membership card; to Sergeant Pat Hennessy, a traffic jam. VVe leave to Mrs. Henry a shorthand class as smart as her nine year old. To Mr. Schectman, we give permission to use our papers to start a bonfire and a match with which to start it. To Mr. Senerchia, we bequeath a year s supply of Dutch Masters. We leave to Mr. Brown a football team as successful as the basketball team. To Mr. Strassbcrg, we give a Florida vacation. To Mr. Katz, we leave a combination lock to protect his lab equipment from the evening school. To Mr. Grimaldi, students who know all the words of our Alma Mater; to Mr. Haeseler we leave window wipers for his eyeglasses. We extend to Mr. Wisot the formal condolences of the Public Service for its late buses. To the Class of June, 1964, we leave a senior year as wonderful as ours. In witness whereof, we have hereunto set our hands and seals this graduation day, June eighteenth, one thousand nine hundred and PRESIDENT VICE-PRESIDENT TREASURER llll vv« vi PRRSinFMI SECRETARY Who Are They — What Did They Say — What Did They Do? And the 1962-63 Central High School basketball team was phenomenal. Under the able guidance of first year coach Matt Lombardi, the Blue Devils wound up their regular season with a record of 22 wins out of 23 games played. The Blue Devil hoopsters opened their season in grand style by defeating Seton Hall on the Seton Hall court, then Weequahic at home. After a nineteen day layoff, a sub-par Central team experienced its first and last taste of defeat at the hands of archrival, South Side. After this loss, the Central Victory Machine shifted into high gear led by several outstanding seniors. Big” Vic Morton, (6'6 ), “Leaping” Bill Key (6'5 ), and Frank “Mr. Versatile” Roldns with the rest of the Blue Devils formed an awesome machine to overcome. This team did not stop with the City Title. Top seeded in the Essex County Championship Tourney, this amazing group of players lived up to the expectations of the experts by defeating all their opponents and bringing home the County trophy for the first time. The Group IV, Section 2, and the Group IV, North Jersey Championships were next in line as the Blue Devils defeated Columbia and Hoboken. Then, before a cheering crowd at Convention Hall in Atlantic City, the Central Basketball Team captured the ultimate prize, the Group IV State Championship. All played as a team and gave magnificent proof of the wonders which can be accomplished by means of unselfish cooperation; for this team played as a unit. Other seniors who formed part of this fine group were: Robert Curl, Melvin James, Robert Morton, and Neil Rasbury. The outstanding members from other classes were Drayton Bembry, William Jennings, and Ronald Lott. Bill Key has been selected as one of the first All-State Team; and both Key and Vic Morton for the .All-City, County, State, by the Newark News and the Newark Star-Ledger. Matt Lombardi under whose able tutelage these miracles were accomplished has been named repeatedly as one of the outstanding coaches of the year. Should any team, at any future time, equal or surpass the record of this group, may it be the Blue Devils of Central High. Steve Grimsley 88 ROW 1: R. Morton, W. Jennings. M. James, W. Key, V.
