To anyone else it might have looked like a bunch of skinny, fat, chunky and some medium sized fellows without the slightest bit of running talent if any. But to everyone's surprise, except that of the coach, this team went onward to win top honors in the country, state, county, and the city. On this team were five of our graduating seniors, at the time, they were just juniors who were constant medal and letter winners. Among these five was a promising quarter milcr by the name of Milton Jackson. This was his first year out but had he come sooner he would have been a major threat to anyone in the state. Next was Ridgeway Jones, he was a three-year man who always put his fullest effort into his running, which earned him much respect in the state as one of its best hurdlers. One of the most developed runners in the history of Central High School and in the state was Earl Rogers. Earl was one of the main reasons our track team progressed so rapidly and gained so much recognition throughout the country. He became one of the country’s best high school quarter milers as a junior, setting records as a junior and coming back to defend them and to break them again successfully as a senior. Last but not the least is Philip Parker. Philip was Central's second best quarter milcr. He was constantly recognized as a major threat to any quarter milcr in the state, for wherever Phil and his teammate Earl went to run, Phil was almost always the recipient of the second place silver medal. He was also a standout hundred yard and two-twenty yard dash man. During the indoor season. Central’s track team earned many honors in some of the following big track meets: In the Cardinal Hayes meet, our mile relay team place third among some eighty other teams. On this team were Phil Parker (lead-off man) and Earl Rogers (anchor man). Also in the same meet on the championship 880 yard relay team was Ridgeway Jones (third man). His team set a new meet record in their event. In the IC4A track meet held at Madison Square Garden, Central's mile relay team won the New Jersey Championship Mile Relay event and set a new state record of 3:27.8 (three minutes, twenty seven and eight tenths seconds). The lead-off man of this team was Phil Parker and the anchor man was Earl Rogers. To sum it all up this year’s track team has been one of the best in Central's history. AND WE ARE MIGHTY PROUD OF OUR FINE RECORD. m®m OUR TEAM—Sol Fleischman, Coach CENTRAL’S TRACK TEAM (OUTDOOR) Central's outdoor track team this year put on a superb showing of their running abilities by performing such outstanding things starting from the Queens Iona Relays to their greatest victory at the Pennsylvania Relays. Their first big meet was the Queens Iona Relays, held at Randalls Island, which was a warm up for the daddy” of them all, the Penn Relays. The boys put on a fine show but they only managed to come home with one set of medals. This did not discourage them, for the following week they went to the Penn Relays where they captured a set of gold medals, a set of bronze medals, and a very large plaque, which was the first of its kind in Central High. As a matter of fact, it was the first Penn Relays award to ever enter the school trophy case. The winners of the gold medals and the plaque were David Christain, Kenny Johnson, Earl Rogers, and Philip Parker. This team made up the 1961 Championship of America 440-yard Relay team, with a respected time of 44 seconds flat. The bronze medal winners were David Barrett, Alan Lockhart, Steward White, and Wiley Boulding. This quartet put on a terrific battle in their section of the mile relay event. This wasn’t the end for they were far from finished and they proved this to every one in the states of New York and New Jersey. From the Penn Relays they went on to gain top honors in the Newark Board of Education Track and Field Meet. Two of the main reasons we received such honors were the splendid running performances put on by Earl Rogers and Phil Parker in their specialty, the 440 yard dash. These two horses placed first and third respectively in their event, with Earl successfully defending his crown and breaking his old record. Other seniors who helped our outdoor track team were Ridgeway Jones, one of the finest and fastest hurdlers in the city; Macon Price, one of the few good discus throwers in the city; Farley Sledge, who earned much respect among the other shot putters in the city; Edris Jackson, a speedy quarter miler and a hard throwing javelin man; and Milton Jackson, who showed much promise as a hurdler. • The title horse Is given to any fellow who has become a major threat throughout the state as a quarter miler. Milton Jackson Earl Rogers Philip Parker OUR TEAM Coach: Robert Reilly Senior Members: Melvin Frizzclle, James Bush, Miguel Hernandez and Jos6 Velazquez. Edris Jackson Swimming 44 Central High had a surprisingly great season, winning four games, two over South Side, one over Weequahic, and one over West Side. Jos6 Velazquez, hard throwing right hander, was credited with two victories. His keen eye and ability to run the bases proved important. Melvin Frizzelle's bat was strong. He banged out hits and when he was on bases, watch out! Miguel Hernandez and James Bush didn’t see much action but when they were in the outfield, they would cut down runners going for extra bases with their ability to peg to the infield.
