SULLIVAN After a well-graced actor leaves the stage, the audience, now become critics, can tell, even poorly, how fine a part he played. The remembrance of the inspired performance is assimilated in the minds of those who knew him. Anti so it was with Mrs. Alice Sullivtin for those of us who were taught by her. Her exit from life’s theater leaves us at once sadder and richer. To her memory we dedicate our yearbook. PRO ALBERT D. ANGELL, JR. FOOTBALL Gibson intercepts a pass on Ferris' fifteen yard line and returns the ball fifteen yards. Head Coach Brown Assistant Coach Hampton Under the diligent instruction of the two new coaches, Centrals team has climbed the first rung on the ladder of success. Its comeback, after several bad years, was so spectacular that we enjoyed the prestige of having the team written up in the New York Times. t Ferris’ halfback tries to elude Jones, Central guard. Douglas and Swint close in to tackle Ferris’ halfback after running ten yards for a first down. Douglas, a small player, is a very speedy defensive back. 54 f BLUE DEVILS CRUSH FERRIS Central’s tackle, Joe Jackson makes a decisive tackle on Ferris’ halfback, Ed Bruiser” Jackson and Benton moves in to help. Central’s football team showed it’s potential by a thrilling 13-6 victory over Ferris High School on October 15. The Blue Devils outplayed Ferris during the entire game behind the fine quarter-backing of Ronald Clark, Delano Clark and James Barrett. Central’s first touchdown came late in the second quarter on a pass interception by James Hill on the 35 yard line. The second touchdown was scored by Dan Cibson after Ferris made its first and only touchdown. The bid for the extra point was knocked down on the one yard line and recovered by Central. Cibson made an end sweep on a pitch-out from Clark and went over for the touchdown. The team played well and was hard hitting. Larry Johnson, Earl Rogers, Larry Armstrong. Johnny Douglas and Willie Swint were outstanding. CHEER LEADERS Cheering the victors! The Blue Devils huddle to plan their second half attack on Ferris. Their first half attack provided them with a 6 to 0 lead. Assistant Coach Hampton evaluates Ferris before Central enters the huddle. WE LOVE THE GAME ABOVE THE PRIZE! TRACK Central’s Outdoor Track Team which came in second in the 1960 City Championship track meet, poses with coach John T. Thomas. Some of the outstanding runners were: David Christian, Earl Rogers, Stu White and Phil Parker. Albert Brown tied for first place in the high jump. The team effort showed the good management of new coach Thomas. TRACK Our Indoor Track Team took second place in the City meet and third place in the county meet. Coach Thomas proved again to be a stimulating factor in Central's drive. SOCCER Coach Reilly The Blue Devils showed good performance throughout the season. They won against West Side and tied two games, one against Barringer and one against Wccquahic. The stars of the team were: Steve Dominic, Captain, Hector Gavilla and Mark Makhobcy. CENTRAL’S CROSS COUNTRY SCORES IN 48th ANNUAL RACE On October 26, eight members of the Central High Cross Country Team walked to the starting line of the Newark High Schools’ 48th Annual Cross Country Meet, rated as a second place team. Thirteen minutes later, they returned as the City Cross Country championship team with five individual medals. The team revived itself. after being defeated by Weequahic and ran a string of seven consecutive victories, including one over a very strong Morris Hill High School team. On their way to the city title, the Blue Devils ran over South Side three times by large scores. Stu White romped to an easy victory over the two and a half mile course at West Side Park. Without anyone to push him, Stu took the lead near the half mile mark and never had a challenge during the entire race. Benny Shipman, one of the main factors in the upset over a favored Weequahic team, ran a very strong and surprisingly paced race. Ben had decided on finishing second, but did not quite make it when a runner from another school nipped him at the finish. There was a duel between the two runners in the last seventy-five yards of the race for this honor. Senior Al Brown, running in his last City meet, had a few bad breaks and finished 10th in the race. With his ability, he should have finished up near the first five runners. Central possesses a precious trophy: Stuart White holds the trophy upon which the school name will be added as the outstanding cross country' team in Newark for 1960. Flcisch-man, coach. The Band and Twirlers under direction of Instructor Salvatore Grimaldi lend moral support to our athletes. 57 CHEERLEADERS Front Row: Captains, Maria Hose Minutoli, Kathleen Wilson, Jo Ann Cenrato.
