When the team played against a heavily-favored Barringer opposition, they were a beaten team to everyone in the stands, but not to the boys on the field. The team fought for every yard with incessant vigor to a final score of 13-12. This was the closest Central came to beating Barringer in the last four years. Central was the only City League team to score against Barringer in 1956. COACH WISOT WITH ASSISTANT COACHES STONE ANO GUARINO. These two victories came early in the season with Sal Iradi pitching the two games. We defeated Weequahic and East Side. The team played hard in its true Central Spirit, but win or lose they enjoyed themselves. A future team will regain some of our laurels. VNT 4( 1011 j SAL IRADI . . . played on the varsity Baseball Team lor two years. He made honorable mention for the All-City Team in his junior year. Sal pitched and played the infield. BASKETBALL TEAM The squad that assembled for the 1956 varsity though inexperienced, put up a good fight in the old Central spirit. The team showed its defensive skill often and thus beat a highly rated East Side quintet for an unexpected victory. SOL FLEISCHMAN Coach was a right guard OO the varsity for 2 years. He excelled on offense and QAvc his best for Central. ROBERT NELSON developed into a fine center and played on the varsity his senior year. k J HENRY kLw hay WK in h.s senior year was second string center. They did a specially great job at the City Meet. Our seniors placed third, and the juniors placed second. Many of the point winners from last season will be back, and with the addition of our Cross-Country Team runners. we should develop a fine team. RUDOLPH GRAVES Rudy was on the Central High Track Team for three years. He worked hard at practice, did woll at the meets and developed into a good half-miler. SOL FLEISCHMAN Coach The Cross-Country Team won 4 meets and lost 4. We took second place in the city, fourth in Essex County and seventeenth in the State of New Jersey. Next year, the team is expected to be one of the best Central has had in a long time. DONALD mcdaniel Don ran three years on the varsity squad and was captain of the team this last year. He took a first for Central against East Side and East Orange. 46 The Soccer Team compiled a record of 3 wins. JOE ST. PIERRE 7 losses and 1 tie. Considering the team’s inexperience, the players were always in there doing their best to win in the spirit of Central High. Joe played mostly at the forward position and a few games at halfback. This is the distinguishing factor between a democracy and a dictatorship. In a democracy one can, according to his political viewpoint, vote for whoever he believes will represent his personal ideals and ideas best. In a dictatorship, the candidate is always pre-picked. If you do not vote for him (what other choice have you anyway?) yot might become (in the candidate s view, or his party's estimation) an enemy of the people. consequently risking punishment. As an example, take the case of Hitler. Running on the Socialist ticket, he established a foothold in the government. Then he changed the name of his party to the National Socialist German Workers Party, (shortened to Nazis) in an effort to get people to desert the socialists and join with him. As soon as he became dictator, he purged all political opposition including the old socialist party. In the United States the leading candidates do not try to assassinate each other to gain power. There are no purges or blood baths following an election. A lot of Americans have died for their beliefs in order to obtain for us those privileges which we take for granted. These political and civil rights are worth holding on to tenaciously. As long as we have these rights why not exercise them to the fullest? Many of the recently oppressed countries, had been taken over by a dictator because of ignorance on the part of the people. Ignorance—plain unadulterated ignorance—is the most vicious enemy of any real democracy and the strongest ally of a dictatorship. Is it worth the time and effort to strive for an education? A lot of students leave school with the idea that they have only been marking time there Nothing could be further from the truth. Labor now offers high wages, thereby luring students from school, but what is the use of being financially secure but unhappy because of limited opportunities for any real advancement? Or what is the point of missing the real satisfaction of finding a worthwhile job. obtained because of your education? Education ties in with politics and runs parallel with it. Too many people in recently oppressed countries were ignorant. Not stupid, actually, but ignorant. Many uninformed citizens of those nations succumbed to the charm of magnetic orators, and did not or could not analyze their words. All of your dictatgrs were splendid orators; they had to be because of the weakness of their issues, and had to depend on the mass emotions of the people to sway their opinions by demogoguery in order to drive their doctrines home, no matter how weak they were. The importance of active participation in our government, cannot be underestimated. After all. our government stands for us and for no one else. How can an ignorant uninformed public help our country in any way? We need an intelligent, informed, and ambitious citizenry interested in our government to carry on and promulgate our democratic policies. FRANK GARON 16 THE FUTURE The Opportunities of the Future The opportunities of the future are tremendous. The many fields in which one may choose to spend his working life are far more numerous now than at any other period since the beginning of mankind. The progress this country has made in the last fifty years is far greater than that which has ever been accomplished before, and we will progress even further in the next fifty years for we have the desire and the basic ingredients to do so. To enable us to carry out these dreams we must have the tools with which to work. These tools are knowledge, force, and persistence Force and persistence must be used in pressing opportunities to the utmost Knowledge is obtained mainly by formal education, but a great deal is lost as soon as it is acquired and must be relearned and practically applied in everyday life. To quote from the late Dr John Dewey, a foremost educator: We learn to do by doing. Civic organizations, clubs, unions, and fraternal organizations provide many opportunities for the meeting of men and ideas. By taking an active part in such groups, the citizen has the chance of finding a more lucrative and self-satisfying job with possibilities of advancement When he has a job that he finds enjoyable he does better work, which puts him in a better position to seek promotion. While he is working he is constantly learning new and different things, not only about his job. but about people in general and the peculiarities of human nature in particular The individual who keeps himself alert and informed concerning his job and the world about him will discover the importance of educational alertness. There are many opportunities that a wide-awake employee can reach out for when he has trained himself to be aware of them. Then he never has to sit by and watch the other fellow get the breaks and blame his misfortune on bad luck. Then there is the opportunity to make a successful marriage and establish a family. That opportunity is always available but the willingness to take on responsibility is less prevalent. It takes a mature and reasonable person to realize fully the tremendous benefits of married life, at the same time realizing the burdens of great responsibility to the marriage and to society that such a step entails. Through the lives of children one has the chance to enjoy life all over again, and the opportunity to bring them up to be good, strong, and heaithy citizens. A good American is responsible for showing them right from wrong and seeing that they have everything possible in order for them to have as good a life as could be hoped for. These are the opportunities of the future. Do you think that you can make the most of them? 17 GIBLIN CLASS OFFICERS RAYMA LA CONTE President VINCENT D ANTON Vice President MARIE NARDONE Secretary JOHN GALANTE T reasurer 18 Presenting the Class of JUNE ’57 PLATO GERALDINE ABALLO Deana” Her ways are ways of pleasantness. LUNDIE Adviser LOOKING TO THE FUTURE The Importance of the Technically Trained in Industry The common layman of today is basically more intelligent than his predecessor of twenty-five years ago. but no matter how smart he is or ever will be. all of his knowledge is in a general vein and not specific. While the general public has become better informed, industry has been advertising its lack of specialists, and its need of specifically trained manpower to operate its even more complex equipment. To alleviate this condition, men are trained to do specialized types of work which provide many opportunities for people who are technically inclined and have the proper academic background. Today, every major industry revolves around the technician. He is, to industry, what the specialist is to the medical world. Most progress in research and science depends upon him. for it is he, and not the average worker, who discovers new and improved ideas and methods. Leaders of industry have not been slow to recognize the value of research. They no longer depend on the individual inventor but are everywhere establishing laboratories to develop new methods, to improve old ones, and to lower manufacturing costs. To advance engineering research, more than a score of engineering colleges have established experimental stations employing men on a full-or part-time basis to carry on investigation and research. Modern machines which are used in big business must produce high precision quality as well as quantity. The person who is called upon to operate these complex machines must have at least a basic understanding of the functions of the machine. Of course, a machine of such sensitivity is subject to breakdown. Here is where the technician steps in. His job is to service and keep the machine in good working condition. Where once big business used to promote the white collar worker to the sales field, it now picks the technician to do the selling. With his broad knowledge of the manufacturing end of the business, and his understanding of a potential buyer's specifications, he can intelligently discuss and conclude business deals. He knows whether or not his company is capable of manufacturing the goods for which the customer is asking. All that the student needs is an opportunity for experience. One who would enter upon a business career with reasonable assurance of success must have acquired essential skills, and possess an understanding of business principles. For your business life to be successful, you must choose your own career, not something your parents have always wanted for you. You should have an objective to strive for. and as you grow your experience will expand. Here at Central we have had available to us a wide variety of courses in skilled business subjects, ranging from Junior Business Training through Secretarial Practice to Accounting. There are innumerable opportunities in the business world as it stands today. The working conditions and financial rewards that come with a career in the business world vary from position to position. Generally speaking, office work is clean, comfortable, and. pleasant. In the Newark area the pay scale for workers in the business field ranges from the beginning clerk's stipend of approximately $45 a week to the fee of the most highly paid court stenographer whose technical skill is rewarded at the rate of $5 per hour. To the conscientious and carefully trained graduate, the manifold opportunities in a career in the commercial and business fields present a stimulating challenge. The social and economic rewards are there for our asking.
