GOLDMAN H.R. 407 STOfiy Of THf STARS (class historq) On a warm and sunny day in September of 1952. we made our first appearance in the newly formed galaxy of stars as sophomores in Central High. We were directed to the observatory by eager seniors who were most interested in trying to drive us crazy by giving wrong directions and selling elevator passes. That first morning, our collection of stars met the Master Astronomer. Mr. Ralston, who told us about the laws of the Universe. His kindness in explaining the rules and regulations soon led us to respect and love him as a true friend. Separated into clusters, we were sent to our homerooms to meet our homeroom teachers. The months went by as we became accustomed to the routines and requirements of our new world. Many stars drifted away from our galaxy during the first year, and our numbers diminished. Soon we were organized with a Class Council made up of representatives of the various homerooms. As Junior Class Officers we elected Angela Parisi. President; Rose Juliano, Vice-President; Grace Adesso, Secretary; and Robert Bellasalma, Treasurer. 62 Sioey Of THE STARS (class history) Our first function was a 3B Social which helped all of us to become better acquainted. After a brief introduction to our advisers, Miss Bennett and Mr. Goff, we danced to records and saw a demonstration of the rhumba by Mr. Geller. The tempo was then changed to that of the Bunny Hop in which everyone joined (even the boys), and we finished with the Mexican Hat Dance. Dr. Lambert's wonderful music on the piano. Annette Mar-sico’s accordion selections, and refreshments helped to make this a memorable event. During this second year of our stay at Central, we joined with several other classes in selecting a ring design. The most popular was one finished in old gold, fashioned after a college type. It has beautiful detail with an imprint of the school on one side and a cog n’ pen on the other. Some students chose a crest design while others preferred the cut stone. There was a great deal of excitement and anticipation during this period as the far distant date of graduation loomed into sight. One event led into another. The Chairman of the Dance Com- 6? SlOfiy Of THE STARS (class history) mittee. Dolores Lardieri, went into action with her group, arranging a trip to Paris on April 30. 1954. To make it more realistic. Mrs. Barnett and her Decorating Club provided miniature Eiffel Towers and cardboard Can-Can girls for the backboards, while streamers flew gaily across our star-lit ballroom. In addition to door prizes, perfume gifts were distributed to all girls who attended. Everyone left that evening with stars in her eyes and a feeling of contentment. It was truly an Evening in Paris.” Time went on—More students and teachers slipped out of the whirl. Dr. Goldstein. Miss Mitchell and Mr. Lewis retired from the English Department. Mr. Klenke from the Technical Department and Mr. Rittenband, the music maestro left for California. One of the greatest losses to our firmament was Mr. Ralston’s retirement. We were unhappy last June to hear that he was leaving, and we have missed him. However. in September. Mr. Angell took over the direction of the school, and we have found him to be wonderfully kind and understanding. 64 STORy Of THE STARS (class history) September. 1954. the time of the Autumnal Equinox, brought with it the beginning of our last year—our last revolution through this universe we call Central. Strange sounds assailed our ears periodically until we became accustomed to calling them bells. We still call them bells though they sound more like sirens. It took a bit of adjusting, but that was not difficult for us who are now SENIORS, the brightest in the Universe. To make our happiness complete, this last year was further improved by longer lunch periods and “music while you dine, thanks to Mr. Angell. the Student Council and our faculty. Early in the fall, the excitement of a senior election resulted in the installation of a new set of officers — Jerry Sisbarro. President; Alice Usovitch. Vice-President; Grace Adesso. Secretary; and Carmine De Maio, Treasurer. The “November Swing'' provided us with another enjoyable evening of swing and sway in our star room. Alice Usovitch was selected 4B Queen of the Swing, midst the autumn colors of the decorations at this dance. More changes came about in the rules. One rule abolished was 65 STORy Of TH£ STARS (class history) one-way traffic—this meant more direct traffic from one room to another and more time to loaf in the halls. On January 7, 1955, came our farewell dance to the Senior A's. The star room was once more transformed — this time to a winter wonderland. The blue and white of Central's traditional colors dominated the decorations which included snowmen dressed in caps and gowns. As always, the girls, wearing gorgeous corsages, looked sweet in their pretty bouffant dresses. Last but not least, came the 4A Finale on March 4, 1955. named in honor of our last fling. Under the supervision of Miss Hough, a new look appeared. The star room took on a new face, with streamers, flowers, stars and comets. The attendance was wonderful. The cosmic trip through our high school world draws to a close as tensions mount and excitement reaches its peak during these spring months. As our yearbook goes to press, we are bursting with plans for Class Day and Commencement — that day which seemed so far in the future when we entered Central and now is so close at hand. We are filled with mixed emotions! 66 bt L X BOB RYANES Commisj’t workhorse in rhe lino for three years. Bob showed a lot of heart and spirit and made a brilliant record as a guard. AL KUTENPLON Al had a special knack of break, ing through the line, recover-ing fumbles and stopping many plays behind the line of scrimmage. He received honorable mention as guard on the All-City team. ART OUTERBRIDGE Central's breakaway runner because of his great speed. Art was a driving halfback and gained important yardage for first downs. DAN D'ERRICO Dan came out in his senior year to make the Varsity and showed ability, but an injury in the first game forced him out for the remainder of the season JAMES ANDERSON SAL TINO An outstanding end. Sal's hard, rough charging gave opposing quarterbacks something to worry about. GEORGE BUTLER A fast deceptive halfback. George was countod on for long runs and known as Mr. Outside on the team. TONY ALBANESE All-City quarterback and co-captain. Tony played J.V. ball in his sophomore year and Varsity ball in his junior and senior years. He always came through with the yardage needed for a first down, and was a fine blocker and pass receiver. JIMMY LICCONE All-City quarterback, Jimmy was the key man in Central's offense, and a good passer. Anthony Marenghi had this to say of Jimmy Let the keeper of hallowed archives enroll the name of Jim Liccone in the long list of Central High's football immortals. Jimmy also received honorable mention in the N.Y. Daily News for All-Metropolitan. 69 JOE SPAGNOLETTI Joe played J.V. ball in his sophomore year and arsity ball in his junior and senior years. Due to the depleted position at ends. Joe was converted from a back to an end and became a great charging end. STOFFED AT THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE. BUTLER IS TACKLED FROM BEHIND. After the first two games and a lot of hard work and spirit on the part of coach and players, the team began to show what it really could do. They started rolling against South Side and they didn’t stop until they tied for the city championship. According to radio broadcaster, Carl Baron, the East Side-Central game proved that a small, determined and well-coached team can overcome tremendous odds in size and experience. Mr. Baron rated the Thanksgiving classic as the outstanding game of the year. BOB REILLY Coach The Varsity Baseball Team is in third place in the Newark City League. Although Central had a championship team in 1954, it is now only moderately successful. The few wins this season have been due in large part to the hard work of our senior members who were on last year's championship team. JIMMY LICCONE Jimmy came up from the Jay-Vees and is doing a good job at the hot corner. He Is a hustler and a good team player. A18ANESE CAYS DOWN BUNT IN SOUTH SIDE CAME ART OUTERBRIDGE Art was All-City Center-fielder last year and should make the selection again this year. He is a great defensive player with speed to TONY ALBANESE All-City Catcher last year, Tony Is a fine plate-man. A great competitor, he keeps the team on its toes. JOE KAUFMAN Joe is playing his second year as an infieider and was shifted to shortstop this season. He is aggressive and a hard worker. JOE AULISI Coach BASKETBALL BUTCH BUTLER Butch fe a Go get it” ball player, a husky rebounder with strong shoulders and is capable of a jump shot from any spot on the court. The BLUE DEVILS, coached by Joe Aulisi. finished the season in third place in the city league. They showed good performance at all games and displayed fine sportsmanship throughout the season. There were some hard fought games which we lost—West Side (both games). Seton Hall 59-63 and West Orange 55-59; and those which we won—Thomas Jefferson 59-55 Bloomfield 85-58 and South Side 56-50. We finished the season with eight wins and eight defeats. BOB REILLY suiimminG The 1955 Swimming Team has shown outstanding loyalty and spirit. Captained by Bill Malone, it was composed predominantly of sophomores and showed promise for the future. RONALD FOLEY Ronie came out for the team as a Senior and swims freestyle in the 40 yard relay. TONY STANIULIS Tony swims freestyle relay and has shown outstanding loyalty and dependability during his three years on the team. BILL MALONE Captain One of the best backstrokers Central has ever had. Bill finished fifth in the City Meet of 1954 and won the backstroke against East Side. West Side. South Side and Arts High. START OF A 100 METER CRAWL 76 WILLIAM BAUER TRACK Among the small group of boys who were on our Track Team were a few seniors. Newcomers include James Simmons and James Rotondo who have just made the team and are showing good promise. GEORGE BUTLER Until this year.
