We captured the coveted City League Title, and produced one of the best defensive teams in the country. We were scored upon twice in City League competition and on both occasions the touchdown came via the air route. We held East Side to only sixty-seven yards on the ground and allowed a net zero rushing average to West Side. The Weequahic game was purely a defensive one with Central coming out on top. 7 to 0 in contrast to the South Side game which was one-sided affair, the Blue Devils handing the Streaks a 30 to 0 trouncing. The Barringer game was fought on close terms the first half, but Central's superior offense broke loose in the second racking up twenty-one points while allowing a big goose egg for the Dark Blue. Outside of City League competition, we weren't so fortunate. winning decisively over Thomas Jefferson 26 to 6. and Nutley, 25 to 7, while losing a very close one to Kearny, 6 to 0, and bowing to Bloomfield. 24 to 0. However, the latter score is not indicative of the closeness of the game. The Bengals scored their last three touchdowns with six minutes of play remaining in the fourth period. Before that the game was fought on even terms. Central won its last City League title in 1949 and was expected to repeat in '50. But the team just didn’t click, so Mr. Comissa started to build for the following year with such promising sophomores as Lou Albanese. Jerry Bruno. Fred Ciavarro, Tony Fabiano. Tony Gcnakos. Ralph Lilore and Joe Ruggiero. His patience, diligence, and coaching skill paid off for now. in 1952, Central has won another City League title and produced an All-State tackle. Ralph Lilore, two All-County linemen. Jerry Bruno at guard. Herb Friday at center, and one backficld man. Fred Ciavarro. Joseph Ruggiero Co-Captain 58 'i- Leonard Aiello 32” Leonard waded until hi Senior year to come out (or the team. AlrhouQh he did not sec much action, he wa alway ready when called upon. Hi forto wa offensive play. In this he followed in the footstep of hi brother. Gus. Central 49. Anthony Fabiano 18 Fab earned a varsity uniform as a Sophomore. In addition to his work as a smart quarterback, he was also an excellent ball handler off the T formation. His loud, bellowing voice helped give the team the moral support needed to go on to win the coveted City League Championship. Our all-city backficld candidate. Fred Ciavarro. played two year of varsity ball. He was fast and shifty and out-maneuvered opposing defenses countless times. He was an excellent runner, and also a good defensive halfback. His performance of brilliant play was an important factor m the success of the squad. SENIOR STARS Anthony Genakos 22 Tony was a member of the varsity for two years Although he did not see too much offensive work, he excelled on defense. Hi brilliant defensive play agamst Weequahic was one of the mam contributions towards winning the game, which cvcnually led to the City League title He was always a hard worker during practice, and showed his worth on Saturdays. Central Dominates All-City Hi appearance there was very timely, for he scored the only touchdown in the game, giving Central a City League title. Joe has played three years on Mr. Comissa's varsity and promised to be one of the best backs in the county until his injury. SENIOR STARS Ralph Lilore “39” Ralph played for Central for three years and promised to be a great lineman. However. he sustained a xne.! injury which kept him out of action until late in his Junior year. Ralph was elected co-captam during the 1952 season. and had the honor of being an ALL-CITY candidate at tackle. He played both offense and defense. H.s line-backing was regarded as the heart of the air-tight Central line, and his fierce, hard play gave the squad the incentive it needed to capture the City League title. Richard Wittek ‘‘23” Dick did not come out for the team until his Junior year. He did not see varsity action until 1952. Although he was an excellent passer and blockor. Dick saw limited action on offense His good defensive work was used in backing up a stalwart Central line. As one of the comedians of the squad, he provided the boys with a big moral lift. Angelo Tursi “21 ” Angelo served Central for two years as an end. Although he played some defense, offense was his strongest playing point. He was a very good blocker and a pass thrown to him was as good as caught. A real hustler, he was always rearJy when Mr. Comissa called upon him. Joseph Ruggiero “19 Joe was co-captain throughout the 1952 season and was the hard luck guy of the team. During the second week of practice he dislocated his shoulder, but he was ready to play the Nutley game. In that game Joe suffered a torn cartilage and did not sec action until the Weequahic game. Central 7 Weequahic 0 League Team With Five Players Leroy Attics The basketball teams of 1951 and 1952 were very successful. The ‘51 team was undefeated in City League competition and lost only three of its nineteen game schedule, those being Orange. Seton Hall, and Kearny. In the county tournament, we reached the semi-finals, losing to Belleville in a nip and tuck battle. The 52 team was a little less impressive, winning twelve games and losing five, while annexing our fourth consecutive City League title. We were eliminated in post-season tournaments in the early rounds as our team never clicked to fulfill its early promise. Mr. Fleischman, our able coach, has great hopes for this year. Leroy did not play var-sify basketball until his senior year. When he came out for the squad in 51. he was crude, awkward, and unsure of himself. A year ot seasoning on the JV‘s Qavo him poise, gracefulness, and confidence. He was the possessor of an accurate one-hander, and could lump with the best of them. Linxo Jenkins Because his scholastic eligibility had elapsed. Lmzo did not play m his senior year. However, he certainly played like a house afire in ’51. thereby gaming a berth on the All-City team. Lmzo was versatile, shooting from outside or from underneath. He was a fine ball handler, had excellent timing and coordination. and he tumped as though he had rubber legs. Above all he was a good sportsman. These qualities made Lmzo a mainstay of the team, 62 ♦ BASEBALL After the 1950 season, the year that Mr. Reilly began his building-up of promising sopohomorcs, it was expected that Central would win the City League crown. We didn't, and a look at the statistics would make you wonder why. Out of a twenty-four schedule we won sixteen, beating such formidable opponents as Bloomfield and Hillside. We defeated South Side, city champs twice, but in turn lost twice to Barringer, which proved to be our downfall. In 1952 we were expected to be one of the state's powerhouses. We were banking on such stars as Jerry Parad.so. Lou Albanese. Herb Benner and Leon Walker, all of whom were All-County men in 51. To substantiate our beliefs we did have a very good year, including an 8-3 victory over Montclair, but we fell just short of the City League Crown. For the coming 1953 season Mr. Reilly has a host of veterans, including Leon Walker, Frank Chnstiano. Bob Wolforth and All-City baseman, Don Jaquin. Although Ralph did not see too much action in his two years of Varsity ball, he was always ready to give the squad a moral lift. He was a fair hitter, but his forte was fielding. Mr. Reilly would frequently insert Ralph in the lineup in the late innings of the game for defensive purposes. A real pepperpot on the diamond. Ralph did much to liven the spirit of the team. V Linxo Jenkins Linzo was one of the best first basemen ever to come out of Central. He spent two Ctars playing Varsity ball. inzo's greatest asset was his hitting ability. His remarkable .478 average in his i uni or year was a big factor in his receiving a berth on the AIL STATE TEAM As a fielder, he left little to be desired, and doubled now and then on the mound. 63 SWIMMING Central's 1952 swimming team had a fair year, placing third in the City. However, we seemed to be the hard luck team of the City League, losing three very close meets to Arts High. Weequahic. and South Side. Mike D'Antuono and Walter Traill were the mainstays of a young and inexperienced team and led the rest of the squad in points. Michael D'Antuono Although he was an ace in the free style. Mike seemed to shine more in the medley relay. He placed first in two important city meets East Side and Weequahic; also chalked up a first in the Arts High relays. Mike was one of the best 40 yard free-stylers on the team. Robert Reilly Coach Walter Traill Walter's specialty was the back stroke, although he could hold his own in the free style or medley. He was another of Mr. Reilly's two-year men. and his experience came through in the Arts High meet, when he placed second in his specialty. BOWLING Anthony Fabiano Fab spent two years bowling for Mr. Benedon's crew. His 165 average was an important factor in Central's winning the City League Crown in 1951. He started oft the '52 season against Weequahic with a bang, bowling 198 and 206. and shows great promise of developing into a star bowler in the future. 64 Central’s bowling team, striving to keep up with the basketball team, also captured the City League crown in 1951. They were undefeated in league competition, due mainly to the efforts of Tony Fabiano and John Dawson. In 52 the outlook was bright with Fabiano and other veterans returning. The squad was quick to show its prowess in winning the first two meets decisively. CROSS COUNTRY Our cross-country team was not as successful in 1952 as it had been in the 1951 season. However, most of the meets that were lost were close. The outlook for the coming season seems bright. Mr. Fleischman has a crop of good, sturdy runners, and many of them are experienced. TRACK In 1951 the track team did not win a meet, but their hard running showed their will to win, and they promised to be a definite threat in 1952. By the time the '52 season came, the boys had gained in experience. They lived up to all expectations, producing a fair year, and giving every team a battle right down to the wire. Pete Peter Lons of those ---- was one of those runners gifted with an immeasurable amount of endurance. Once he started running. he hated to stop. He would have been a three year man had it not been for illness in 51. He returned in 1952 farin’ to go, and placed ninth in an imporant city meet. Frank Paris Frank spent only one year on the team, but he made sure it was well known Everybody knew when Pans was running because just toward the end of a race he let loose a kick that sent him out like a shot from a cannon. Had ho possessed a little more endurance, he would have won many a meet for Central. Frank Paris On Your Mark! Ah, how we remember those good old days and our first impression of Central. It was huge! We thought those stairs were leading us to Central and on into the future. We can still remember looking for our classes and wondering how we would ever find them, no numbers, no arrows, just a new paint job . . . Our classes were now beginning to organize. We found the teachers to be as we expected. We remember the excitement over Ida’s and Chippy’s first cut-slips. We shall never forget the scream that came from the Biology room, when Phyllis Garofalo discovered a skeleton in the closet. Rumor said it was a teacher on a diet. Oh yes, we could walk through Central with our eyes closed and the odors from the Chemistry lab would lead us. February approached, and promotion time was here. Some of us kids had to double up on subjects, the rest came through; still we went along merrily. Who could ever forget lunch time; it never failed; we had visitors, Mickey and Minnie mouse in our lockers always getting to our lunch first. Then there was the Dance Band giving their first performance in the auditorium. Phew! was the cry, and we didn't mean the band. The chemistry lab was at it again. CENTRAL H. $. JUNE 1953 With spring approaching many social clubs organized in the Varsity. Poor Mr. Strassberg needed a secretary to help him out with the cut-slips. Our next big step was into 3B. September 1951 The fall session began with everyone trying to sell elevator passes. We remember the great joy when Nick. Bob and Lou made J. V. football, and Nick. Sam. and Mike made J. V. basketball. We knew there was a great future for Central’s sports with those boys on the teams. We can still remember how happy we were when we heard that Mrs. Litch and Mr. Petitti were to be the class advisers. Then came the Class's first meeting. A short time later invitations arrived Please attend the 3B social . The band played continuously at this gay affair. With the help of Mrs. Litch and Mrs. Elam the class social had refreshments. We can remember Mr. Petitti's great attempt to address 300 kids. One thing that still stands out in our minds was the discovery that there was talent in our class. Ronald Drummond sang while Walter Foster accompanied him on his accordion. Boy! all the friends that were made at this social. It was a great success. Soon, we knew our class would start paying dues IN ACTION CLASS HISTORY Front page news. Central goes on strike! City Hall was swamped that day with rooters demanding rallies. That scare from the skeleton must have really aroused Phyllis because she became the first girl Student Council President. Let's not forget Danny Ber-ardinelli being picked for scholarship representation. We also remember the time when there were flowers in the classrooms, music in the cafeteria, clean curtains and displays hanging and teachers gay and smiling, all for the evaluators. Then there was a big BOOM!!! Do you remember the bomb scare? Yeh, that was the time Rose Raniero ran down four flights of stairs to save Perry Como’s picture. Remember, school was closed until 2 o’clock but who came back? Then came the big event; election for 4B officers was to be held. So, the halls were filled with posters for election. The results were: NICK MARTINO .... President OLYMPIA LA PARA . . Vice President ANNETTE SENA .... Secretary THERESA KOSJOCK . . . Treasurer As we think back, we see how much these four helped us. We had our dance The Maytime Frolic and the receipts indicated it was the biggest success of the year. Next came the English Fundamentals test which resulted in all of us taking English Fundamentals for six months. CENTRAL H. S. JUNE 1953 Do you remember the big romance of the year between Nick Martino and Cathy? Nick Casale and Phyl? September 1952 After our summer vacation we were ready again to take the next step in Central—going into the 4B. We remember how nice-looking and tall the boys had become, and how the girls took notice of it right away. We recall the time we all (300) crowded into room 214 to get our class rings? Boy. hands were flying that week just to show off the rings! What a nice surprise for Central when we read the paper that Sunday morning to see that our boys, Lou. Nick. Pat, Tony, and Rudy made All City Champs. It was a shame Mother Nature was against us for our 4B Dance. There was no gain, just rain. New Year’s brought a happy event. Many of the girls became engaged. Do you remember in the middle of winter, our Junior-Senior Prom was filled with bop and yet a flop? Our basketball team proved to be a success and with Harry. Nick, Jimmy, Sam. Mike, and Otis helped to bring our team to victory as city champs. We discovered our class had many outstanding students among them our 4A officers. IN ACTION CLASS HISTORY DAN BERARDINELLI . . . President NICK MAFFEI . . Vice President ANNETTE SENA .... Secretary THERESA KOSJOCK . . . Treasurer Then came the day when we heard that all the lights were turned on at the Paramount and 20 Centralites were found watching The Stooge . Our classmates were now grown up and fortunately none were present. The classbook was getting underway with a lot of huslte and bustle—taking pictures. We were thrilled to know that Olympia La Para and Judy Cordasco were the editors. Also an excellent art staff, under the supervision of Mr. Schechter, with Ronald, Jeanette, Marie, and others, were working together to get our book designed. Dan Basso, and Charles Donaldson as photo editors, helped a great deal with the pictures. Louise Esposito and Vicki Ci-ciola also did their share of typing to get our classbook to press. Then came the excitement of Class Day. Who was to be in it. what was it going to be about, where were the costumes coming from and would they fit? All those questions arose ar.4 were solved. Well, the deadline was met for the Classbook. and Class Day. and here we are signing books and saying good-bye. Now. we know we’re ready to take our last steps in Central and go forward into the future. The season opened on September 27 with an easy win over Nutley. The game provided many opportunities for the line and backfield to sparkle. The score totaled 25-7. In the second game South Side did not tax the Blue Devils too much with Central being on top with a score of 30-0. The Barringer game provided a tense battle for the first half. In the second half Central's power and coaching broke through and the score ended up Central 21, Barringer 0. The Bengals of Bloomfield trounced our boys by a score of 24-0 in a game more closely fought than indicated by the score, and the following Saturday the underdog” West Side Rough Riders held Central to a hard fought 6-6 tie. The Weequahic game became a defensive battle that found Central on top at the end, 7-0. This game had to be won so that the Blue Devils could remain in the city race; and they won it! The following week Central moved out to Thomas Jefferson and for a change won handily 25-7. The hard fought, muddy Kearny game found the High Streeters on the short side of a 6-0 score. This was a hard game to lose since our boys outplayed Kearny during most of the game. Thanksgiving morning found Central closing out the season battling East Side to a 6-6 tie. The patience of Coaches Commisa and Aulisi in grooming and training such promising boys as Spagnoletti, Albanese, Casale. Addeo. Patuto. Ruth, Adams and Cronin during the 1950 and 1951 seasons paid off by their being largely responsible for bringing the City Title to Central in 1952. The importance of clean, sportsmanlike play whether in victory or loss was a lesson learned by these boys which other Central teams will follow in succeeding seasons. RUDY ADAMS “45” DICK CRONIN M47” Dick's three years of varsity ballplaying for Central revealed his fine offensive and defensive playing. His Seat blocking in the Jefferson game Iped Central to win very easily. Dick received two varsity letters and a gold football. Rudy was an outstanding lineman for Central who worked very hard and donated much time to football. His great work on defense gave him a berth on the All-City team of 1952. Rudy played two years of varsity ball and earned two fetters and a gold football. BOB FATUTO “28” Bob was a hard runner who also played good defensive ball for Central. He played the better part of three seasons and earned two varsity letters. A TENSE MOMENT FOR THE BOYS ON THE BENCH. 8-4 TONY ADDCO Tony was the fattest player on the team. He played a great game against Barringer and helped a great deal to win the City Crown. He was a good running back and defensive player who played one year of varsity ball and earned one varsity letter plus a gold football. PAT SPAGNOLETTI ” 6” Pat played three years of Varsity ball and was a standout on the line. He was tough and performed excellently as a defensive and offensive player. Pat received two varsity letters and a gold football. LOU ALBANESE “17” Lou was one of the backs that the coaches depended upon. He played three years on the varsity squad, and carhed three letters plus a gold football. He was a hard, fast runner whp was named on the Second City team of 1952. NICK CASALE “20 Nick was another of the Central 1952 backs who was hard to handle when carrying the ball. His running helped v in many games for Central. Nick earned two varsity letters and a gold football and was also on the Second City team of 1952. RUTH ‘‘34’ — a good fast runner. 60 yards against South J played good football all He played three years SAM Sam ran Side and_________ ____ ... played three yeers of football and received varsity letter. BASKETBALL TEAM 1952-1953 SOL FLEISCHMAN Coach The High Street cagers once again brought the City Crown to Central. In city competition our boys were undefeated all season. Many of the regular games were thrillers, especially those played against West Side. Barringer. Weequahic. Thomas Jefferson and Orange. Our only loss of the season was to Bloomfield on a night when our boys just did not have it. Their shots, dribbling, and passing were off. We had high hopes that in the Essex County Tournament the team might bring another crown to Central. They reached the quarter finals, but at that point Orange, whom we had defeated earlier in the season, put up a roadblock which our boys could not hurdle. Coach FleiSchman is to be complimented for having done a fine job with our boys. NICK MARTINO 25” Nick was a member of the 1952-53 Championship team in his senior yoar. He had a pood lump shot, and was a hustler on tho court. NETTING A 2-ROINTER DURING A MOT MOMENT. CLAUDE MOSES 30 The team’s high scorer. Claude had a variety of snots, his b a driving layup and a iur Claude received All-County City honors. OTIS HUNTER 35M Tho team's most consistent player. Otis was a pood shot and rebounder, always fighting to the end. Otis received All-City nomination, and was on the 1951-53 champion teams. HARRY ROGERS “31” A fine rebounder. Harry's best shot was a jump shot. He was also one of the leading scorers on the team. Harry received All-City honors in his senior year. MIKE CARAMBATOS 38” Mike also was a member of two City Championship teams. His best shots were jump and set shots. He filled m very nicely when called upon. SAM AQUINO 29 Sam was a varsity member for two campaigns. He possessed a good set and drive shot. In the latter part of the season. Sam took over a starting berth and filled in very capably. JIM SESSOMS 39” The team's best all-around player, both defensively, and offensively. Jim had one of the best set and lump shots in the county. In his junior year Jim made All-City, and was rated with the best. 87 ROBERT REILLY. Coach Central High placed 3rd in the city race after compiling 11 wins and 8 losses. Of these 8 losses, 6 were lost by a margin of 1 run. That one run difference spelled out the story of a season that might have been much more successful. Two of the most exciting games of the year were the Montclair game, which was won by the High Streeters 9 to 6 and the Bloomfield game which we lost 3 to 2. Coach Bob Reilly worked hard with the boys and deserved to enjoy a better season. May we wish the 1953 team success. Pitcher Height, speed end control in his relief work contributed materially to Central's victories. He played two year of ball that earned him two baseball letters. LEON WALKER Outfield powerful hitting, Leon's . canny base running and f ing explains his choice for the All City and All County baseball teams for 1952. He played three years of varsity ball and earned two varsity letters. 'jJT JACK RITTER 'V , r First Baseman Jack's size made him ideal for the first base position. Every game was played with all his heart and he has the potentiality of becoming a great player. FRED 01 MARTINO Pitcher Fred's fine curvebell really mows the opposition down. His powerful hitting warrants his playmg outfield positions when not hurling. AL GEYER Outfield A natural at hitting who Rlayed every game with all is heart. Two years of varsity ball playing have earned him two varsity letters. LOU ALBANESE Catcher His hustle on the playing field and smart handling or Central hurlers was largely responsible for his nomination to the All City and All County baseball teams of 1952. Lou looks back fondly upon his line-drive single m the Jefferson game which broke up a no hit game. RUOY ADAMS Pitcher Has done some relief pitching this spring. BOB WOLFARTH Infield Starting as a J.V. in 1951 his slick infieldmg led him to a varsity berth which earned him two years of varsity playing and two varsity letters. CENTRAL H. S.
