COtAhMS Coach Our football record for 1951 may not have been too impressive, but our boys played a hard, clean game throughout. They wound up the season with two wins, six losses and one tie. Despite many obstacles, they succeeded in attaining third place in the City League. and in retaining the Technical Trophy by defeating East Side. We learn to take defeat as well as victory like good sports. don rieth Don played his best game against West Side, passing for two touchdowns and scoring the third. He is one of the finest punters in Essex County. LARRY GUARINO A clever little ball-handler, Larry led Central’s backs in scoring with three touchdowns. He was our quarterback and defensive end. JOHN HORNUNG John is a ''scrappy' lineman who never stopped hustling. A hard competitor. he played guard, center and tackle in his senior year. LARRY DE ROGATIS One of our best defensive players, Larry did a fine job of backing up the line. He was spectacular in catching a 27 yard pass from Rieth, and racing 55 yards for a touchdown in the West Side game. 6j Beahm stopped after a short gain Ruggierio breaking away on an end run Scrambling for a fumble Rieth passing over the arms of W. In the City League competition, they missed winning the championship by only one game. They finished second, tied with Barringer High School. We are quite proud of them. 7 4e diamond LARRY GUARINO Though Larry did not como out for baseball until his senior year, he made the first team and proved most versatile. He played short-stop, batted left-handed. was the team's lead-off man, and even pitched in a few games. Jenkins scoops one out of the dirt as De Rogatis looks on. Our boys are aiming to stay in the lead. TOM RIVELL Tom is a very capable and consistent bowler, who has come through when needed most. VIC ZOPPI A newcomer to the squad, Vic has helped the team stay right in the groove. Chalk up another strike for our team. As we sit here reminiscing about the past three years in Central, we can still recall when we first entered the school. To us. it was just a maze of one-way corridors, up and down stairways, big-shot seniors, and A, B. and C lunch periods, which we Liter found out to mean aristocratic appetizers, barbecued beans, and camouflaged calories. We then noticed they had just finished painting the cafeteria in honor of our coming. A little later on we assembled in the enormous auditorium and were introduced to our principal. Mr. Ralston, and assigned to our homerooms. Days went by and so did the soles of our shoes as we wore them out running up and down stairs and around corridors, hunting for our correct classes and te achers. Months later the process was reversed and the teachers began hunting for us. About this time the Seniors were all through initiating us and they were now soft-soaping us to buy their Ixxwters and attend their dances. Moving now into 3B, wo were preparing to have a great big 3B Social, the purpose of which was to get the members of the class acquainted with each other. Girls came and lx ys came, which was a nice arrangement. We danced and ate lollipops. This was fun??? By the time everyone had recovered from this Social, we were in 3A. The next big event on the agenda was the election of 3A class officers. In order to lx nominated, a candidate had to have a petition signed by fifty of his fellow classmates and a C average in scholarship. Robert Bums was elected President; Joan Durante, Vice President; Jean Florida, Secretary; and Theresa Bove, Treasurer. The April Showers Dance, our first evening dance, proved to be the most successful class enterprise held that term. Between the dances and the elections, the entire class was driven crazy by lxx k reports and memory selections. With this profitable venture tucked away under our belts, we forged to greater heights by entering 4B. We welcomed this term because we were not only Seniors and graduating in June, but also because we would receive our long-awaited, highly anticipated rings. They were a beautiful gold, with a blue stone surmounted by the Central shield. Surrounding the stone was engraving with the date on either side, 19-52. During these years, our sports teams were doing very well, winning trophies and titles in their respective fields. For four consecutive years, from 1948 to 1952, we were the city basketball champions. In football, we took the city championship in the season of 1949, our first year in Central. In bowling, after only our second try, we succeeded in winning the city championship. Elections for 4B officers were held. The successful candidates were: Robert Bums, President; David Batitto, Vice President; Sylvia Amoroso, Secretary, Ruth Mackey, Treasurer. Joan Durante was selected Editor-in-Chief of our Yearbook. After our semi-annual class dance, we had the excitement of being host at the Junior-Senior Prom. Miss Rybkiewicz was resplendent with two corsages, consisting of three orchids. Before the scent of her flowers had disappeared we were in 4A, our final term. Everything moved at a rapid pace; dues, boosters, pictures, popularity poll and elections. Believe it or not, the entire set of 4B officers were re-elected. This might be interpreted as a vote of confidence in appreciation of the good work they had done. The next great event was the Junior-Senior Prom (but this time we were not hosts) and then the Yearbooks. At last, the big day—commencement, when we received our hard-earned diplomas. Central took three years, graduation exercises lasted but a few hours. This is the end of our class history but Cood Luck to you in your own individual history which has just begun. 59 Sophisticated BETTY ACCOM ANDO BERNARD McDONALD ‘“Mixers •“Suggs’ ALYIRA MAROTTA MICHAEL RESTAINO Best Dressers BETTY ACCOMANDO ANTHONY CALABRESE Best All Round 61 TONY D AGOSTINO TERRY WESTON Nicest Personality JERRY PARADISO MADELINE VETRONE Most Likely To Succeed SYLVIA AMOROSO, PIAVE CORRADI Most Respected JIMMY FORTE PEGGY CURRAN aM JOAN DURANTE ROBERT BURNS Cutest CAROL LOMBARDI HENRY ISE Class Babies JOAN WALSACK HERBERT BENNER Most Conceited BETTY ACCOM AN DO EUGENE LUCARELLA Noisiest GRACE VALENTE JOSEPH DISPENSIERE R FAVORITES Class Dreamers Best Smile CONCETTA MATTLA RAI.FH IANNUZZI Best Dancers LENA MACERA LUIS DURAN Wittiest DOLORES DE BUONO EDWARD DEL TUFO Class Cutters LOUISE FIERRO HARRY CONFORTI Class Apple Polishers STELLA PIATKOWSKA NICHOLAS GARAFFA Atnbitious . ncM'«TlS° VE COHV MM FRANCES MESITI RALPH BATTISTA RICHARD MUTTIE popw'ar Laziest DELLA STARK JOHN PAVLO CENTRAL CLUBS LIBRARY CLUB MISS BERYL ANDERSON, Advisor SCIENCE CLUB MR. Everyone expected a four touchdown victory for the mighty Barringer eleven. Central's star rival, except Sal Commisa and his group of inspired players. They had in mind the burning fact that as long as Mr. Commisa has coached at Central, he has never lost to a Barringer team. Their desire to win was pent up over a week of hard practice. The team dedicated the game to Mario Carbone, a great athlete at Central, who was injured in a pre-season scrimmage. They went out and played their hearts out for forty-eight minutes, driving, scraping for every yard. However, when the final gun sounded, the score stood 13-12 in Barringer’s favor. It was a broken bunch of players who congratulated the Barringer team and wearily trudged to their dressing room and cried. Everyone in the room, including the managers, cried, because they thought they had failed the two people for whom they wanted most to win. Then in their hearts came a faint hope, a hope that perhaps they hadn’t failed. In spite of the fact that they lost, they had still played their hearts out, showing all the fine skill and sportsmanship that Mr. Commisa had taught and wanted to see them display. And to this day, we believe Sal Commisa and Mario Carbone are grateful to the small group of players who showed their courage and love of football itself. SAL COMMISA Coach SENIOR TEAM % - $ '7£-3F i FRANK BANKS 28 Frank played vanity ball for two yean and always tried his Inst out on the field. He received mention on the All-City team of 51 at the end position. The team's first six pointer of '51 in the Nutley game was scored by Frank and he also scored 12 more in the Barringer game. SENIORS ON OUR TEAM JAMES FORTE “42” Jimmy, who played great vanity ball for the last two seasons, started the football year under the handicap of taking the position left h I-on Mnnt.imi r.ino. Jim not only played physically but he put his heart and soul into every minute of the game. He injured two fingers but continued to play through the season. JOHN SCL'RKO 35 John played two yean on the Central vanity. He originally was an end but changed to center in his senior year. He played a clean, hard game, the type that was characteristic of Central ballplayers through the yean. He earned two varsity letten. An injury received midway through the 1951 season ended his playing days. JOSEPH D1SPENSIERE “39- Joe was a latecomer to the team, starting in his senior year. He won his vanity letter and the thanks of all his teammates and the student body for the kick he blocked in the East Side game, which led to the first touchdown and the winning margin.
