O'CONNELL, Jr. RUDY MARZANO GAETANO SPERDITO ROYAL BROWN OUR LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT E, the class of January 1946, of Central High School, being of sound mind (?) and sound body (says our draft board) do hereby dispose and apportion the fol- lowing articles to the persons mentioned herewithin or without. To the freshmen we leave the culture, traditions, spirits (of ammonia) and low marks (to be attained in their senior year) that are significant of Central. To the sophomores and juniors (the proverbial missing links) we leave the ad- monition to beware of the over-ruling, arrogant, proud seniors. To the 4B’s we leave those obstacles that forever confront the undergraduates. (Know what we mean?) To the janitors we leave the hope of a self-operating elevator and the broom squad with its long list of charter members. To officer Shien we leave. (Period) To nurse Chandler, a thermometer with a permanent reading of, 103° F. and a whole case of gym excuses already signed. To the flag-pole we leave lipstick remover and the aspects of ever blooming love affairs. To the chemistry laboratory we leave the sweet scent of H.S. To the cafeteria we leave the sweet, requesting voice of Mrs. Misurell. SHAD- DAP! To Mr. Cracken we leave a season pass, with which to get into all the downtown movies to take attendance. To the athletic clubs we leave the roll of adhesive tape and the lack of equip- ment. ; To Mr. Schleicher we bequeath “а kit and kaboodle of Tech. classes. To Mr. Miller in his famous roll of Pancho we leave students with a lisp. To Mr. Wahl, a brand new thermos bottle and enough paper cups to go around the class. To Miss Gordon we leave a robot who will do all that she bids. (1f possible) To the physics teachers we leave physics . To Mr. Rehn we leave a secretary who will not graduate. To Mr. Nester we leave a set of reversible arrows in the halls. To Admiral Strahan we leave a fleet of toy ships and a bathtub full of water. To “Doc” Goldstein we leave the U. S. to tell his students about. To Mr. Rittenband we leave the hope of a good band. To Miss Boutillier we leave the hope of abolishing memory selections, book re- ports and term projects. To Mrs. Welles we leave thanks for the gorgeous decorations that made our dances at Central a success. To Mr. Ralston we leave that which is not material, but is contained in the hear of graduates and students alike; that fondness and respect that he so well deserves. We not only nominate but dictate the wish to have as executor of our will, Dr. Schleicher with his knowledge of law, and as trustee, Mr. Griffith, who will administer with a conscience our last will and testament. A b LES 4% ELL worth honorable mention and the overall picture of Central sports, is our “never say die baseball club. In spite of the handicap of lack of ex- perience, Coach Zachery Sosnow molded the team, with its few returning lettermen and a few newcom- ers into one of the finest teams in the state. Our team started the season showing possibilities as a championship team by defeating Bloomfield High. Ted Del Guercio, a reconverted infielder, pitched this game and showed promise of being one of the best pitchers in the state. His battery mate, Ray McLeod, performed admirably and also showed great promise. As the season progressed, the team with Del Guercio doing most of the pitching, improved immen- sely. Del Guercio had the distinction of pitching the first no-hit game in the City League. He followed this with some other low hit games. This was due largely to the fact that our fine catcher, Ray McLeod, handled him in Big League fashion. These two boys constituted the best battery in the city. Two other boys, Bob Hirlemann and Ed Earl, formed shortstop and second base. Although these boys were not stars, they were consistent and partly responsible for the team's success. Our team was chosen to play in the tournament, and although we lost the first game, the boys played hard until the last out, with shouts of praise ringing in their ears Basketball FTER plodding along for a number of years with mediocre or fair basketball teams, Central High last season popped up with one of the really good teams in the history of the school. This brilliant squad ran through its schedule mowing down opponents left and right while at the end of the season it did not have a per- fect undefeated record it had one of which it could well be proud The club dropped only three of its tilts and during the course of the season had gained the coveted title of City Champion”. This was achieved by successfully beating twice every other Newark Group IV high school squad. Central is also able to display proudly in its trophy case the Group IV Sectional Championship trophy because of the efforts of the efficient squad. It is also to be noted that Central went quite a way in the state championship tournament and was only eliminated one step away from the very top The graduating class of January 1946 swells even with more pride than the rest of the school because two of its members were also outstanding sparkplugs in this terrific team. The class was proudly represented by. the persons of Ed Weber and Howard Scherr. Both these boys played varsity ball and their names and ex- ploits will be remembered by their fellow graduates for many a year. As a final tribute to this memorable team and its admirable record the graduating class of January 1946 would like to leave the school and our coach Mr. Henry Finck with this thought. We are proud to have been in Central during the time of your glory, for your glory was our glory. With pleasure and dignity we shall always be able to say that we were the contemporaries of a fine group of athletes and sportsmen. Fencing Team HE little known fencing team of Central would surprise many of its students with its rec- ord. Central High School has had one of the best teams in the state for the last fif- teen years. Last year with Mike Di Cicco as their star foilsman, Central lost only one bout to Barringer High School 5 to 4 out of its entire season, but to make up for this they beat Barringer 6 to 3 in a return bout. The three varsity men who received their letters were Mike Di Cicco, Bruno Folena and Nick Scalera. Others in the varsity team were Archie Kallas, Neil Petrillo, who did not face an entire season and Vinnie Martino. This season Folena will be the only veteran back, with some good freshmen and sophomore prospects. Mike Di Cicco who graduated last June is fencing for Notre Dame gaining a position on the varsity team. p mE je WM Football OOTBALL has been a major sport at Central since the school’s opening and through the years the “Blue and White” has established a lustrous name for itself in the foot- ball wars. қ The 1945 season saw a light but courageous eleven run through а not to successful season but one that never the less upheld the Central tradition. The bright spot was the 25-7 victory over South Side. They were held to a scoreless tie by West Side, but fought hard to nearly upset two out-of-the-city rivals. Bloomfield, perennial state titlest, was held to a 7-O score, making the touchdown in the last minute of play. The Orange Tornadoes were held to a two touchdown victory. The power of the remaining opponents proved the difference as Weequahic and Bar- ringer scored close triumphs but powerful Nutley and East Side soundly trounced the un- der-manned Bluedevils, the latter securing possession of the technical trophy donated by both schools. Tony Bellacosa, powerful tackle was the outstanding graduate member of the team. Bellacosa, co-captain of the Bluedevils with Joe Gallagher, has been mentioned on many All-City selections. Larry Buschio, Gerry lacobelli and Augie Grasso also played outstanding ball. The boys filled line dots either tackle or guard. Johnny Boland had a big job as he attempted to fill the shoes of Chubby De Rogatis, last season's star center, but he performed admirably. The other members were end Ed Weber who turned in early because of a side injury, and speedy Jimmy Young who left for service in mid-season. 4 78 ” atf R LH PEUT Iden: auge 1 І fons to (die CEFE ELLIS S omes From Bel ter, nt when ns Howie Schorr Gerry lacobelli : B 3 Basketball Football Ld 2 Varsity Seasons 1 Varsity Season è ТЕТЕ Baseball 2 Varsity Seasons (“ То у Bellacosa - Bob Hlemmi Football Baseball Varsity Seasons 1 Varsity Season All-City Tackle A 1 Ray McLeod 2 wy Quae Pai p t All-City Catcher wo Sport Letterman LI - we Е $ 4 Е H . Needless to say this bunch of recruits formed around the teams only returning veteran and star, Len Donner- stog, and went to cut a high mark of achievement, in comparison to their inexperienced state. As the season progressed, the team became keyed right down to the last, all important meet the annual Newark High Schools Swimming Meet. It was in this meet, that the team’s supposedly inexperienced boys placed in every event at least twice and one event, the 220 yd. freestyle placed three times. The team did so well that it came within one point of the City Championship. This event wasn’t an accident, many days of hard and cold discouraging practice went into the team,— that and a lot of Central Spirit made a remarkable show- ing. This coming season finds several of the teams mem- ber sgraduating. The boys, leaving the future acquadic work to the under-grads, are Fred Jinks, Ralph De Rose, and Ben Rafanello. Fred Jinks will be the greatest loss to the team, since Len Donnerstog left, Jinks held down his job at the 220 yd. freestyle as only he could have done. lt was a common sight to see the diminutive Jinks outclass bigger and more experienced men. It is also known that Jinks never placed lower than second in a regular meet, more often he won first. Ralph De Rose swims back stroke for the team. Ralph was right there in every meet. Ben Rafanello, who swam the 220 yd. freestyle along with Fred Jinks, also is leaving. The ‘46 version of the team will be potentialy a greater, and more experienced team than those of past years. So we leave Central with the knowledge, that Cen- tral’s swimming tradition will be carried to even greater heights of glory. CROSS-COUNTRY CROSS-COUNTRY is perhaps not ular sports but it definitely is one the most gruelling tor its competitors Cross-country requires stamina, strength and a strong will to continue. The fellow that runs cross-country demands a great deal of respect and admiration for he has really worked to earn his “С” Central's cross-country teams have been fairly suc cessful for the past few seasons placing Central third place in City competition. With Bill Miles, John Igna- morello and Ronald Bundick the team showed a sur- prising 7th place finish in state-wide competition. Duel victories were scored over South Side, Barringer, St. Benedicts, and Mountain Lakes. Central suffered set- backs from the champion Weequahic squad and West Side. Individual star was Bill Miles, freshman sensation who lead Central all season. Captain and only graduate member on the squad is Ronald Bundick. This was Bun- dick's second varsity season and his best. He finished 7th in the city meet and 40th of 200 in state competi tion. A constant point scorer and threat, Bundick always gave his best Also active in track competition before turning his powers to football was Jim Young. Young ran cross- country and ‘formed half of Central's famous two-man track team in the spring. He was City and state 100 yard dash champion for two years in a row. TOMORROW OW it had happened; the tireless efforts of Bernd Kahn, apostle of de- mocracy for the universe, had been rewarded, his dream of twenty years had come true; there was a United States of the World! All peoples, exer- cising their sovereign right, had on the fourth day of November, 1966, elec- ted Nick Rogowsky as its first chief executive. It was well for Nick that his former classmates, Bob Vreeland, Josephine Cerqua, Yolanda Santora, An- thony Macciola, Mary Ann Javinski, Grace Luedeke, Fred Pembra, Thomas O'Connor and Anthony DeCosta, long famed as teachers of flawless speech, had spread a knowledge of basic English throughout the world, thus remoy- ing all possibilities of any misunderstanding. Ав a result, with the campaign slogan, “Вие and White, fight! Fight!”, Rogowsky and his whole ticket had been swept into office. What familiar names! Woiceshen, Vice-President! Crincoli, Secretary of Agriculture! Cavanaugh, Secretary of Treasury! Pis- tone, Secretary of Labor! We fomer Centralites, feeling justly proud, were giving this universal winner a great reception at-Madison Square Garden; for he had been our class president in ‘46. Jerry LaConte, Walter Matasko, Abe Bennet, Lennie Desi- derio, Joseph Lauda, and Steve Sidorak, all suave diplomats, were in charge of the arrangements. What an evening! Dominick Roberti with his world- famed philharmonic orchestra! Marie Giuliano and Ма е Bongiorno ۳ stars! Jack Trager, celebrate cellist! (He had to give up the blow-hard in- strument.) Angie Carbone and Mary Rienzi, wizards on skates! In anticipation of this super event, | arrived at the theatre early and was greeted at the entrance by Edmund Yarish, a cop. He had kept track, in a pureley friendly sense, of a goodly number of our class, and so had much to tell. Bob McGlynn, Joe Salvatore, and Bob McNahoe had a chain of drug stores circling the globe. Hard luck had overtaken Fred Saxton and Bill Goetz. Fred's New York motion picture theatre was almost destroyed by a fire orig- inating in the projection room; while Bill's new office on the Rialto, in Venice, proved too heavy for the bridge and both structures collapsed. Goetz was awaiting the reconstruction work to begin, but the ceiling was still on. Poor Bill! He had, however, a ready answer to that famous question, What news on the Кайо?” Адат Misurella and Nick Porcella were fortunate; they owned a Ruppert Stadium in Moscow, and had given Irving Bottner of weevil fame the pink lemonade concession. This interesting conversation, or should | say monologue, was broken by the approach of Edward Schetelich flawlessly groomed as a floorwalker at Bamberger's should be. With him was Jack Hicks, the poetic dean of a tech- nical college in Newark. They had had dinner at James Gevas's Waldorf Plaza. Here Richard Beutler, Sam Angelo, Walter Meyers, and Anthony Campise, arrayed in colorful uniforms, were the head-waiters, while Clar- ence McTague and Jack Keller, owner of the Atomic-Any-Place-in-the-World -for-Fifty-Cents-Taxi-Cab Company, resided as permanent guests. (McTague, AND NOW ... TOMORROW you know, amassed millions from the manufacture of balls sensitive to tilting for the pin-ball machines.) Jack Keller hopped off his trans-Atlantic bus to report that, on several of his recent trips across the Cherbourg New York bridge, he had passed Harold Scuderi, former peabody expert and now winner of a walking marathon held in Berlin. He feared that Harold might be over-doing it, since he was still on foot and carrying the heavy silver cup. Jack also had it ón good authority that Bill Muilkens had caused quite а splash up Canada way—he was swimming from Labrador to New York! Al D'Amico was following close behind in a canoe, just in case. Robert Stelik, captain of the mighty pleasure cruiser, the “Ralstonia”, had dropped anchor off the New England coast, fearful, since the fog was dense, of a head-on collision with either the lighter craft or the swimmer. This ship, by the way, was the one which had taken Frank Cilwa and Mildred Belotti to Spain. Here they became Spanish teachers in Barcelona. Now, since it was nearing eight o'clock, and people were milling in, we decided to follow the crowd. In advance of us, were the members of the press, Laura Miller, Alice Polychronis, John Weiss, and George DeHart followed by the public stenographers, Louise Veltri, Lucy Marconi, Carmella Patuto, Joan LaTournous, Carmella Bravetta, and Nicholas Venziano. Santo Cascia and Frank Cuva were likewise near by, busily handing out little cards which read, “Ве sure to see Cascio's Circus—the best ever! January to June at the Sum- mer Garden!” Once inside the massive edifice, we were given programs and shown to seats “о the aisle by Red'' Trento, the head usher and grand bouncer. Comfortably established, we decided to watch the crowds go by. What a bunch of celebrities from all fields of endeavor! There came Richard DelVec- chio, President of the Out-of-this- World Airway, Inc., who had canceled all flights to Mars that evening, to permit the air-hostesses, Juby Fucello, Mary Freda, Joan Spadone, Gloria Centanni, and Julie Delessandro, and likewise the pilots Robert Katz, Joe Pardee, Stanley Maczszyn, Edward Petyia, Eddie Mikolay, and David Philo to attend this most memorable event. Rose Tipaldi, writer of a best seller, next came down the aisle, busily signing autographs as she went. Close behind was Martin Brumer, Commissioner of Parks and Public Works, accompanied by his aide Dominic Boncouri, wearing his best political grin and bowing by mistake in acknowledgement of the applause being given to the great novelist. Catherine Porrecca, Rose Marie Finaldi, and Lillian Caposiena glided by in their best l-am-a-model fashion. Americo Bonavito strutted along looking very important; for he was Marie Bongiorno's manager. Robert (of cartoon fame) Ricker, his right-hand man, cleared the aisle for Myron Pokross, top man in the U. of U. Н. (Union of Union Heads). With an air of importance and an odor of ether about them, three famous surgeons, Joseph Carnevale, Martin Feldman, and Joseph Gabel, followed by the nurses Bessie Hatcher, Henrietta Kerpert, Evelyn Miller, Marion Walker, AND NOW ... TOMORROW proceeded to take their places а few rows ahead of us. Аз some attractive matrons passed, we recognized the former Louise Zapulla, Ruth Jennings, Ann Fabiano, Hattie Parks, Concetta Facchino, Phyllis Nocciolo, Mildred Krota, Kathleen Hymners, Lorraine Moluskie, Gloria Rolleri, and Eva Irene who paused to chat. She informed us that Rose Mesce was playing the lead in the still popular, Junior .Miss, in London, Marie Castigliano conducted а dude ranch in Florida, Missouri, while the perfect pedagogues, Rebecca ۷۶ and Rena Segata taught English as it should be spoken, at Oxford. Hollywood, however, had claimed Rose Marie Ceszeski and Rose Marie Squibb. We chuckled to ourselves as we remember how seriously these people had studied stenography and typing while at school. Just at this point, Bert Himmelsteib's voice resounded via the loud speaker announcing that Joseph Grazecki, Carmella Leone, Nancy Calde, rone Lee Rubinaccio, Sigrid Chåndler, and Bill Boyer, former pupils and still friends of Mr. Stamelman of Central High School, would circulate among the audi- ence, selling the finally completed, 1946 edition of Test Flight. The competi- tion which these disciples of literature met was keen. Unceasingly the re- freshmerit vendors, Lorraine Fleet, Ruth Isenberg, Rosina Arminio, cried out Souveniers, soft drinks, peanuts, and pop-corn!’’ While, at stated inter- vals, the roving photographers, Julian Buckner and Roy Krasnoff blasted the air with, “Look pleasant we're going to shoot you. Wearied by this battle of voices, | started to peruse my program. Never had | seen such catch lines in advertising. Learn the B. C. D's, of the restaurant business. Enroll now in the Bundas-Carpel-D'Augustino School for Chefs”. “Clean quietly with our noise-less Vacuums’’—Blare and Blare, for- merly Blair and Blair, 45 MacArthur Boulevard, Tokyo. “О your toes with Monsieur Cerreto —dCerreto's School of Ballet at Market and Mulberry Streets, Newark. “Ве beautiful at a reasonable ргісе”--Магто and D'Alessio, Beauticians, Astoria Plaza, New York. “For the styles of tomorrow, visit our shops today —Mmes. Chiaravallo and Carnevale, Stylist to the World, 7 Rue de la Paiz, Paris. Learn to stand with John A. Strand! On roller skates that is! Come to the Circus Maximus in Rome.” “Palms read and budgets balanced at the Little Brown Coffee Pot Tea Shop —Rose Marie Gargano, Sole Pro- prietress, 11 Grub Street, London. “If you've eaten your hat, or the moths, your suit, see me —Matthew Pomo, Connosieur of Men's Furnishings, cor- ner of Prince and Pauper Streets, Bombay. 'Forty Fleet Street for fast ac- counting —Mierzznski and Cummings, L'td. “Books to keep? Consult us — Misses Julia Mazzeo and Jeanette Nielsen, 15 Bedlan Row. Hearing that noise, which only silence can make when it falls, | looked toward the stage. There stood Jack Netta, who informed us that he had been asked to pinch-hit until the president-elect, who had been unavoidably de- layed, should arrive. (Nick's elephant, it seemed, had tangled with the heavy traffic on Fifth Avenue.) Netta, with his usual ability to meet any situation, AND NOW ... TOMORROW whiled away the time reading us the many messages which had come in trom all parts of this globe and points beyond. John Krieg had flashed greetings for Joe Gallagher, famous football coach, and his assistants, Colabelli, Sneddon and Lombardi from the moon where their players, after having beaten every earthly opponent, were making а name for themselves. Gevas radioed fel- icitations from members of the alumni on Mars. Here Sachs, Brewster, and Haupt were daily striking it out while Margaret Parella and Gloria Cozzo served thousands of baseball fans doughnuts and coffee. The fame of this mobile canteen, the “Шат”, had spread far beyond the stratasphere due principally to the culinary skill of the chief cook, Franklin Cook, ably assisted by Mary Angevine, Filomina Caruso, Susan Capra, Frank Comita, Alan Webb, Ann Dell Osso, and Florence Parisi. Greetings from Mickey Mouse!” were the words from Hollywood sent by the DeVito brothers of the Walt Disney Studios. John Borbone sent a telegram of greetings for himself and the mem- bers of his show-boat crew from the Mississippi where they were crusing. His troupe included such famous personages as Rose Ма е DelGuerico, and Teddie Ruggiero, soloists; Jack Wigler, drummer; Frank Anderson, baritone; Stella Heytota, Marilyn Schaeffer, Helen Kazala and Dot Marchak, a singing quartet, plus Irene and Theresa Sweeney, the “Dolly Sisters’ of ۰ Jack Netta's reading was suddenly interrupted by the entrance of Ar- mand Catugno who had just flown from Geneva where a delegation com- posed of artists and statesmen had reached the decision concerning the flag for the United States of the world. “Т е new Над“, Armand smilingly an- nounced, is to be none other than our old flag—the stars and stripes!” What thunderous applause greeted this announcement, as pride welled up in every American heart. What was happening? Where was | now? Where were the crowds? Where was Madison Square Garden? A voice at my elbow soon put me straight, “Yes sir this ex-serviceman has answered the sixty-four dollar ques- tion correctly, Congratulations, sir, and here is your $500 victory bond.” More applause followed. Now | had my bearings; | was at home, seated by my radio, listening to the Ask Ме Another” program and studying for a his- tory exam. Studying history—that's what had put me to sleep. “History can do queer things to people, | thought to myself as | settled more comfortably in my chair and tried to recapture that same dream from which | had learned no facts but had obtained some wonderful theories for “О е World . P. S. Dear Classmates: If any of you have been omitted from this prophecy, | assure you it was not done intentionally. If only | hadn't been awakened so soon, | should have found a place for each one of you in the world of tomorrow, but be as- sured | shall let you know whenever “| see you і my dreams . © С. 5. But he stood there, Nose flattened, Eyes dreaming with the crawling second hand Of a clock in a window. A little boy wanted а toy soldier. Amid night stars Не wandered with the soldier. When inflated The plastic bubble of Joy Tottered and danced On excited hands Higher and higher it bounced. Faster and faster it danced Till the hands grew careless And the Joy was lost, The child's face saddened And a cry almost broke through the frown. When suddenly his eyes flashed a new brilliance And a smile curved itself about his lips. His hand reached into his pocket And the child began blowing up another balloon. A mother and child walked hand in hand. The child saw a twig on the ground. The child reached for the twig. The mother tugged the child away And the child obeyed the mother. The child grew up. Throughout our 43 season, we combined this fighting spirit with skill and took second place in the City League In our ‘44 season, true to tradition, we again captured second place in the City League. Showing that fine Central spirit, we went on to throw back alí but one of our city opponents, the Red Raiders. We likewise bowed to a few suburban teams Our last year, the ‘45 season, was not so successful as the others. How- ever the team fought hard, and managed to give all their opponents tough battles. All our losses were close contests. Although we were beaten by most of the city teams, we finished fourth in the city, with а win over South Side and a tie with West Side. Despite the fact that our ‘45 team met with tough cpposition, they tredded through the gridiron season always fighting on with increased courage Football Players TOM SNEDDON Тот, а boy with plenty of “до” power, has played two years of football. Не earned а JOE GALLAGHER J. V. and Varsity “С” in his Junior and Senior joe Gellägher, a tell well preportiened fel- years respectively. We shall remember the tall quiet end who was always up and at the op- ponent and always a credit to his team. JOE COLABELLI ” Joe gave football a try in his Senior year and earned the center position on the varsity. Although injured in his first appearance against Barringer, Joe managed to battle on in the Nutley game. He was unable to finish the season, but had courageously won a Varsity c low, has certainly made a name for himself in football at C. H. S. He has been an outstand- ing player since his sophomore year when he was chosen a member of the J-V squad and earned a junior varsity C. During his junior and senior years, ne starred in the same old left-end spot, winning two more varsity C's and the distinction of being the holder of the high-scoring record in the city and the country. Excelling in all sports, he is our only graduate to hold seven varsity letters. Congratulations, Joe! RAIS SLSR eae unm 1932 gui BILL SAKS A J-V man for two seasons, Bill was elevated to the varsity in his senior year By the end of the court season, he had developed into the most improved valua- ble player on the team. Along with Gal- lagher, he was co-captain and play maker Bill brought down the ball and set up the plays. When he wasn't feeding his team- mates, Bill was a dependable scorer Basketball Players JOE GALLAGHER Joe has proven one of the most versatile athletes ever to wear the blue and white. і his sophomore year, he went out for the cage team and won a starting berth. Since then, he has picked up All-City and All- State honors for his all around play. А excellent backboard operator is Joe and his HAUPT “RICHIE” most dangerous offense weapon is a soft left-handed, jump-push shot. Besides being co-captain in his senior year, Joe finished among the first five in scoring in the county. Like Saks, Haupt played J-V ball for two seasons and then was taken on the varsity He won a starting position through his de- termination and team play. A good floor man and defensive guard is Dick Backes! TOU past years have seen two of the best cage teams in the school's history. With eigh- teen victories and the city championship under their belt, the 1944-45 cage team entered the state tournament. After defeating Nutley and Belleville, the Blue Devils faced Orange's Tornadoes. Despite having built up a sizable lead in the first period, we were forced to come from behind in the final quarter to win. Then came the Union Hill game. The Hudson County quintet was too much for the locals and our dreams for a state championship were prolonged. But our last year was our banner year. We won sixteen games during the regular schedule, two less than the '44-'45 year It was in the tournament that our boys really began to click. We weren't supposed to have a chance to retain the sectional crown which we won in '45. But the never-say-die Centralites defied these predictions when they hit on all cylinders and reached the State Finals before being eliminated. We startled the sports world by upsetting previously un- defeated Clifton, who were heavy favorites to win the state crown. Everyone dreamed of bringing the title to Newark for the first time, but it turned out to be only a dream; for the next night we succumbed to Thomas Jefferson in a game that was won on the foul line. All in all, we were unbeatable these last two years in city competition. We hope the future Central teams keep up this fine record. The team presented the school with two city trophies and two sectional trophies besides tying for another city trophy. For what more could one ask? Baseball 1 surely has been a victorious season for our baseball team under the direction of Mister Sasnow, head coach, and А! Sabino, assistant. Left without a returning atter man, these two produced a competitive nine Three seniors «vere among those who brought fame to the team and to Central. Adam Misurella and Nick Porcello proved supreme in hitting and fielding. We shall never forget Nick's homer with two men on base, which gave good old C. H. S. a 6-4 victory over the 1945 state champions, Bloom- field High. Peter Cummings, а newcomer, did а fine job throughout the games in a hot corner position. For work well done, we say to this trio, Good luck, boys!” URING our eventful four years at Central, we have witnessed some fine swimming teams. The Central mermen swim hard and have а lot of spirit.
