As many have said it is a hard thing We can recollect the happy spent in the spacious and well-venti lated two-by-four Prvor sanctum, that unused closet, originally meant for a spare stock room, and our heart cannot possibly bear the thought of leaving it. Then, again, there floats back to our reminiscent mind the first time the ORGAN was played. We can recall the many times we detention for coming late to our classrooms because of some “foolish, insignifi cant Pivot duty. Tears of sorrow overwhelm us when we remember that those delightful six o'clock trips to the printer are over, and that we must once more settle down to the distasteful task of getting home for dinner on time. Then when we consider the thought of losing that vague, empty title which goes under the name Honor, secured only by toil, hours, express our words of others before us, to say good-bve hours w« were given ceaseless long sleepless nights and adverse criticism, there arises a feeling of regret that our period of work is Yet, of our trouble has become dulled, and our petty Over. to become serious, when the keen edge trials have been forgotten, we shall always re- member our experiences with a feeling of satis- faction, and rejoice in the fact that we did our best for CENTRAL and Tue Pivor. Remember the note book or theme you didn't do until the last night before the morning it was due? I remember the first time 1 Central High School. The occasion was when Market Street High School students visited Central to be entertained by Dr. Smith by hearing the ORGAN. That was the early part of 1930. GRIFFITH, Art + June 1, 1933. Dear Parents: Success, according to a large part of our pre-depression Americans, has been interpreted as the accomplishment of a pur- pose by hook or crook, by fair means or foul. Fortunately for the country, we have at its head a President whose being is founded upon the ideals of conduct, of character, and of social sacrifice and not upon the ingrained thought of getting away with things unnoticed by others. The example of carrying on the affairs of state sincerely, openly, and above-board must prompt all of us, the parent, the child, and the educator to fix in our characters the cardinal principle, “Success comes to all by helping man and child to recognize the justice of lovalty to country and the joy of self-sacrifice for our fellow-men.” Very truly yours, MU REA LP д Ls Shuffle the Cards! Each dav the great mechanism that is our government acts as a robot which mechanically deals out new cards. The aces, jacks, twos, and fours miraculously change before our eves to beer bills, unemplovment solutions, farm relief, et al. A smaller robot, but ong quite powerful im its scope of high school life, is now engaged in rousing us from a lethargy that has encompassed us for the past few vears. Perhaps it was one of the whims of capricious old Demon Depression that publicized our Alma Mater as lacking in school spirit, as being just a machine that turned out students from its hopper in one indistinguish- able pattern, and as а group in whose minds the lunchroom, where gavety and hilarity reign, came first and the halls of learning just a poor third or fourth. With this new deal of unused, immaculate cards, there will be noticed, even now, a change in the attitudes of our students. Activities are once more taking on the aspect of a project that will attain its full growth in the verv near future Our sports squads show great promise. The Kooseveltian influence, the New Deal, has taken a hand in the proceedings! MIRIAM STERNHERGER Confessions and Contritions Another June has come. Time for one more class to depart. But has our dear old Alma Mater allowed us to leave her loving grasp with- out some token of affection? Ah, no! Though we sorrowfully take our leave, she bestows upon each and everv one of us two of the most valu- able gifts, wisdom and memories. Kin CCC (ac We came to her a flock of foolish, giggling youngsters. We thought her mean when she allowed those dignified creatures (namely seniors ) to look down on us with amused, tolerant airs. We classed ourselves as martyrs when, as sopho- mores, we had to spend long hours with those horrible books. As jumors we softened slightly as we enjoved the privilege of cutting classes without being caught. But we were immediately brought back when, after a few escapades, we were found out. Then we thought her prying and unfair. miracle of miracles, we became But alas, even then we blamed you for the nervous prostration that preceded senior exams and distribution of O, K.'s. Finally, seniors, Dear Mother Central, won't vou íorgive us our hard feelings against you? Won't vou re- member only that we now thank vou for every- thing ? For the hard work, the patient teachers, the many books; they gave us our wisdom. For the tardy slips, the detentions, the social activi- ties, the sports; they supply us with memories. Now thank you, dear Mother Central, thank Please trv to forgive us and May you and good-bye. 2 remember we'll always be grateful to vou. you always do as well for vour foolish, giggling freshmen. The state meet climaxed a program of five track meets in which Central track men participated. It also marked the first time in seven years that Central totaled enough points to win the honor. David Jakes, Six boys — Hollis Lavsears, Homer Pope, Alvin Attles-Bey, Leroy Jackson, and Sam Coles,—were awarded athletic letters. Put let us digress for a moment and view the dramatic scenes that were being enacted the night of the State Indoor Track Championships. The last event on the program had been an- The 220-vard finals were about to be run off. Central, up to the last event, had gained only 9 points. We needed five to win. In the southeast corner of the Armory were benched the Central track team. Two of the finalists in the 220 dash were Central men—Hollis Laysears and Edward Maxwell. Upon one of these boys or both hung Central's chances to gain victory. However, another favorite for this event loomed up on the stage. Allison McGaw, of Kearny. McGaw had been an early favorite and hv now appeared to be a threat. l.aysears and Maxwell stepped to the starting line each conscious of the task they were sched- uled to perform. The whistle blew. “О vour marks!” velled the starter. “Bang!” barked the gun. And they were off, seven boys each striving to break out in front before that first treacherous turn was reached. Laysears broke first with McGaw on his heels. Maxwell followed. Closer and closer came the turn and MeGaw, the threat, attempted to pass lavsears, took the turn too fast and wide. Max- well grasped the opportunity and slid into the nounced, position, forcing McGaw out Down around the stretch Laysears came galloping with Maxwell a good second. Up the last stretch of fifty vards beth Central bovs were fighting hard. The red wool suddenly appeared. And Lavsears and Maxwell came through the finish line about ten feet apart! The meet was wver—the crowds began to swarm on the floor—more than half of Central's team encircled the victors—the announcer was bawling out the time of the event—Laysears was given a cup for winning the 220 dash—and still another cup was being handed to John Choko, assistant to Coach Ba uer, emblematic of the championship. ' sect nid Up in the dressing room the team was cheer- ing. Mr. Bauer, choking with jov, raised his hand and exclaimed, Fellows, I'm proud of vou. In fact, Um the happiest man here tonight.” Basketball also dominated Central's share of sports. The team, under the guidance of Coach Harry Sargeant, won seven of fifteen games played during the season. Varsity members in- cluded: Andrew Chisick, captain ; George Targer, captain; Edward Wagner, Cecil Watkins, Irving Goldberg, Jack Fien, Masso Rvans, Robert Al- tounian, Fiore Bracciforte, Jervis Miller, Harvey Botnick, and Chris Green. Several of these members were lost through graduation last January. Јонх C. Praszxick. RALPH LIZZO Bakery Family Bread and Special Flour 61 DAVENPORT AVENUE Newark, N. J.
