A NEW ARMY TO BE MORE LIKE OLD ARMY IN FUTURE, screamed the headline in the Arizona Re- public, but did anyone hear it? Could anyone have heard it over the din of a helicopter, a tank, guns, ar- tillary, snappy slogans, and snappy soldiers. That headline had no chance whatsoever-nothing could top the educational experience known as United State's Army's visit to Central that cool December day. They came, according to them, not to sell us on the Army, but rather to simply show that the Army is comprised of your average joe, and that it really isn't such a bad outfit afterall. They came to tell us that the Army of the future will be a liberated, almost fun place. fThere were rumors flying to the effect that the New Army will not even kill anybody, or at least YOU won't be doing the killingj They succeeded partially in what they wanted to do, They proved to us that soldiers are just the same as you and me. CAs a matter of fact they may even be you or me in a few yearsj And, being like you and me, they try to escape unpleasantries. They proved to us that they are just average joes doing their job. Without him how could Hilter have condemned them at Dachau? Without him Caesar would have stood alone, He's the one who gives his body as a weapon of the war, And without him all this killing can't go on. He's the universal soldier and he really is to blame- His orders come from far away no more. They come from him and you and me and Brothers, can't you see? THIS IS NOT THE WAY WE PUT AN END TO WAR. But one touchdown could have made the year much more impressive. The key game was against the Maryvale High Panthers. Carrying a 6-2 record into the game, Central had a chance for the league title. The power-packed Panthers, however, pushed across three touchdowns to Central's two, edging the Bobcats 20-14. A Bobcat victory over Maryvale would have given Central the league crown, enabling the Bobcats to face Phoenix Union for a state playoff berth. Whether attributed to fate or the Maryvale line, a third Central touchdown did not occur and the Bobcats were forced to settle with a strong 7-3 record. The other two Bobcat losses were to Brophy Prep and Phoenix Union. The inexperienced Central offensive unit was stymied by Brophy in the season's opener for both squads, resulting in a two-point Central High defeat. BELOW- Back Randy Woodard tries a right-end sweep against Camelback High. Phoenix Union overpowered the Bobcats with a three-touchdwon explosion after Central had taken a 7-U lead. BROPHY 9, CENTRAL 7 Neighboring Brophy Prep pushed across a second-halt touchdown and nipped the Bob- cats 9-7 to open the l97l season. After being held for little yardage during most of the first halt, Central quarterback Torn Ong climaxed a down-field drive with a tour-yard pay-dirt sweep to give Central a 7-2 hali- time lead. A safety gave Brophy a 2-0 lead early in the game. CENTRAL 8, ALHAMBRA 6 Central High shocked third-ranked Alhambra with a safety and then a 65-yard touchdown pass from Greg Hubbell to Kevin Adams for an 8-6 Bobcat win. Also sparkling the Central attack was Gary Rajsich, who had punts of 54 and 61 yards enroute to a 39.4 yard punt- ing average for the evening. CENTRAL 34, WEST 12 Using a touchdown pass from Greg Hubbell to Craig Mills, and interception and touch- down run by Kevin Adams, two scoring jaunts by Tom Ong, and a final touchdwon run by Bryce Rasmussen, Central flashed by West High 34-12 in its third encounter. Shelley Lowry, lim Shroyer, and Gary Rajsich led Central's defensive unit in registering the win. CENTRAL 15, MESA 8 Mesa, ranked high in the state listing and nearly impossible to defeat at home, was stopped 15-8 by a spirited Bobcat offensive and defensive performance. Gary Rajsich grabbed three tosses for 80 yards to key the win, Central's third in succession. PHOENIX UNION 18, CENTRAL 7 Central's 18-7 loss to Phoenix Union was no surprise, but it was unpleasant just the same. After Bryce Rasmussen carried Central to a 7-0 lead in the opening minutes of the game, the Coyotes sprinkled doubt on the Bobcat playoff hopes by nabbing an 18-7 win. The Phoenix Union defense' held in check a team that had scored 9 points in its previous two games. CENTRAL 27, NORTH 6 A strong passing game carried the Bobcats from a scoreless first half to a convincing 27-6 win over North High in Central's sixth game. Greg Hubbell accounted for two Cen- tral tallies-first with a TD pass to Kevin Adams, then with a short-yardage run. A 29-yard Dennis Goettl to Gary Rajsich pass and a Steve Mehagian run accounted for Central's two remaining touchdowns. CENTRAL 47, EAST 7 Showing an awesome offensive display and an equally tough defense, Central spoiled East High's homecoming with a lopsided 47-7 LEFT-lim Shroyer fields a punt against Alhambra while Randy Woodard and Greg Iohnston pre- pare to block. RIGHT-Greg Hub- bell rifles a pass to Craig Mills for a yardage gain against Brophy. victory. While East was held to 82 yards in total offense for the game, Central quarter- back Greg Hubbell was permitted enough space to throw five touchdown tosses. CENTRAL 28, CAMELBACK 0 Tom Ong raced 24 yards to give Central its first six points and the Bobcats never lost momentum in dumping Camelback's Spartans 28-0. Greg Hubbell and Dennis Goettl both fired TD passes in the win, which set the stage for the Maryvale contest. MARYVALE 20, CENTRAL 14 Greg Hubbell fired two scoring throws, but it was one short as the Maryvale Pan- thers topped Central 20-14. The win assured Maryvale of the League B title, Central had to settle for No. 2. CENTRAL 12, SOUTH MOUNTAIN 0 Greg Hubbell and Dennis Goettl led Central to a 12-0 White-washing of South Mountain in the season's final contest. Hubbell and Goettl both posted touchdown sprints, while the Central defensive unit throttled the South Mountain attack. Two members of the 1971 squad were honored by their teammates at the close of the season. Dave Freeman was voted the team's out- standing offensive player, and Shelley Lowry was named the team's outstanding defensive player. Head coach Ray Laing and assistants George Endres and Dan Stone are optimistic about the 1972 football season. Among the letter- men returning are quarterback Greg Hubbell, backs Gary Rajsich, Dennis Goettl, and Tom Ong, and tight end Kevin Adams. ASS ffaflii, N, -fr 4 fn 5 .ya x if 1' w X 3? MIDDLE ROWAIim Morley, Iirn Ran- ney, Rex Wilson, Carl Papa, Ieif Hubbell, George Gilbert, Mike Iunior Varsity Central High's Iuriior Varsity squad showed a great deal more promise during 1971 than their 3-7 record indicated. Led by fullback Pat Mahoney, tight-end lim Morley, and quarterbacks Robbie Raysich and Andy Belew, the Iunior Varsity squad rolled over Alhambra, Phoenix Union, and Camelback for the three season wins. Perhaps the most impressive win of the season came against Phoenix Union The Coyote freshman team of 1970 had gone un- defeated, and the 1971 IV's had a 3-O record before the Bobcats thumped out a 24-14 win. The Phoenix Union squad was composed of principally the same group that had finished spotless the year before. Tom Mahoney led an overpowering offen- sive attack against Phoenix Union, barrelling through the middle for decisive gains. Belew also tired a strong passing game, finding Morley as his major target, Central squeezed by Alhambra High School in the squad's initial contest of 1971 by a 6-0 score. Mahoney scored the game's only touchdown on a one-yard sweep in the second halt, and the team's defensive unit, led by middle linebacker Bob Dean, held Alhambra scoreless All-iambra's IV team went on to finish the year 7-3, Facing a Camelback team nearly devoid of talent, Central High rolled out a 40-O win for the other team victory. from the begin- ning it was obvious that it would end in a lopsided Central win. Coach Greg Happe praised quarterback Robbie Rajsich as being one of the team's most talented members. Rajsich missed most of the season with an inyury. l'le's going to be playing a lot of varsity ball next year, Happe remarked. 1-le's light U30 poundsl, but he has a super arm Belew, who filled in when Rajsich was in- jured, was lauded by the coach as being an outstanding roll-out quarterback. If Coach Ken Troutt were asked to give his formula for a state basketball tourney he might reply as follows: Take a team with your tallest man at 6-3, then lose your 6-3 man to injuries, then finish with a l0-15 record. While the formula is not guaranteed to work, it did enable the Bobcats to sweep to a second-place divisional tourney spot before losing to Tucson Sahuaro in the first round of state play. Of course a touch of speed and determination helped. Height and injury problems caused the Bob- cats to drop eight of their first ll seasonal contests. The loss of 6-3 junior center Iim Kuhn early in the season to an ankle injury seemed to insure a less than mediocre fin- ish for the team. Yet something happened midway in the season to turn Central's basketball fortune around. And whatever it was, it began with Although East topped Central 71-67, the Bobcats displayed a competitive spirit that had been absent in earlier contests. Follow- ing the East loss, the Bobcats rolled over North High by 13 points. Steve Adams and Gary Rajsich sparked Central with 25 and l7 points respectively. Central notched a divisional playoff spot with a desperation 73-72 win against South Mountain. Down by one point with three seconds to go, the Bobcat cause seemed hopeless. Kevin Adams, however, grabbed an inbounds pass from Iohn Hamman and popped in a l5-foot jumper at the gun. Central was paired against League A winner Phoenix Union in the first game of the play- off, a team that had recorded two wins over the Bobcats during the regular. season. Paced by a 26-point performance from Steve Adams, Central expanded a three-point half- time lead to a 7l-54 triumph. the team's second encounter with East High. The two guards held the Coyotes' one- two scoring punch of Tony Winrow and Dan- ny Tucker well below their seasonal average. Facing West High, which finished the season with a l7-lO mark, Gary Rajsich poured in 20 points to spearhead a 62-5l upset win. The win was accredited to superb foul shoot- ing and aggressive basketball. Maryvale High dropped Central 60-44 to give the Bobcats a second place divisional finish. Yet the back-to-back upset wins tabbed the Bobcats as a possible cinderella contender in the state tourney. A cold offensive performance was a major factor in the first round state loss, 59-45, to Tucson Sahuaro. The Bobcats dropped behind by eight at halftime and, despite repeated surges, were never able to close the gap. Steve Adams and Gary Rajsich were voted the top squad performers during the season. Q, 'y Na junior Varsity Central High's junior varsity basketball squad, assisted first by the scoring punch of Dennis Goettl and later by sharpshooting Bobbie Rajsich, showed poise and promise in registering a l2-7 mark during the l97l- 72 school year. Goettl, a 5-lO sophomore who was promoted to the varsity squad mid-season, was the leading scorer and rebounder as the IVS jumped to a winning mark. Later in the year, when freshman Robbie Bajsich was moved to the squad, the team scored 99 points in a staggering win over Camelback. A grudge win over Maryvale to avenge an earlier loss had to be regarded as the team's top performance. Rajsich scored 29 points in the winning effort, and 6-2 Ierry Kemp hauled in l5 rebounds. The win was credited to a hustling full-court press which the Bobcats held the entire game. Aiding Rajsich in scoring was 5-9 sopho- more Hardy Laskin, while 5-ll sophomore Pat McCormick assumed control as floor leader. Coach Iim Brown also praised a strong bench as instrumental in the winning season. Other junior varsity performers who as- sisted the team were john Lane, a 6-4 re- bounding specialist who posed an inside scoring threat, Brad Morrow, who at 5-8 was quick and hit with deadly accuracy in- side of 20 feet, Iim Chandler, a strong re- bounder who at 6-3 specialized in blocking shots. Iim Morley, an aggressive player who at 5-8 rebounded with the six footers, Reed Butler, a reserve guard who could be de- pended upon to spark an offensive unit gone cold, Bruce Nichols, a 6-0 sophomore who shocked opponents with his swishing base- line jumpers. Robin Moore, a consistently strong forward who could drive up the middle like a Mack truck, Mark Lumley, who at 5-ll was an accurate shot from the outside, and Bill Gleason, a 5-9 sophomore known for his gutsy hustling in pressurized situations. A ' F325 I , ,k,, , at 5 e ag: P11-r-in-I Central High's tradition of championship wrestling teams faded during the 1971-72 mat season. The Central grapplers of two years back were state champions, and last year the Bobcats finished with a 9-2 meet mark and two individual champions. While success is sweet, it can't last forever. And it didn't. Coach George Endres, faced with the pros- pect of building a winning team around five returning varsity performers, had to settle for a 4-B mark over the year. And although 4-6 is a notch or two down from 9-2, the team performed well and could easily have ended 6-4 or 7-3 with a little help from lady luck. Central began the year with a close, 25-22 win over highly-rated Alhambra. The win was accredited to an all-around team effort sparked by the individual performances of Mike Consor, Bill White, and Tom Bollinger. Yet an omen for the year occurred during the first contest. Paul Iackel, who carried a string of 25-consecutive match victories into the meet, was out-pointed in his first match of the year. Mickey Bannister, Ron Lacy, Mike Hughes, and Paul Iackel were the only squad mem- bers to place in the divisional qualifying tourney-and thereby advance to the state. Bannister took second in the 145-pound category, while Lacy and Hughes both placed third in the 185 and 132 weight categories. Iackel won the 138-weight title. But none of the four could muster a state title for Central. Lacy and Bannister were eliminated in the first round competition, while Hughes and Iackel both advanced to the semifinals before meeting defeat. Iackel, who finished the year with a 22-2 mark, set four school records en route to a third-place state finish. Barry Wick, wrestling at ll2 pounds, set a school mark with 25 reverses to round out the records established by the squad. Shelly Lowry, who registered l5 escapes during the season, set the club mark during last year with 17. Will the fortunes of fate restore Central as a wrestling power during 1972-73? While nothing definite can be predicted, Coach Endres has a solid group of juniors returning to give depth and balance to the squad. Londen led the team in reverses with seven, Ami was second in takedowns and fourth in total points, and Skomp was second on the team in predicaments, escapes, and reverses. Coach Ray Laing's job was made difficult by the fluctuation of players from junior varsity to varsity. March was not a kind month for the 1972 Central baseball Bobcats, but Coach Bob Ruman is confident that the team, despite its 3-6 record at press time, is on the way to a winning season. Coach Ruman is basing his confidence on the strong right arm of hurler Steve Adams and the booming bat of Gary Rajsich. Adams stiffled North High on five hits in his first outing, while Rajsich sprayed power hits to all fields. But Central's hopes for a possible state tourney berth are not based on a mere two players. In the field, the Bobcats sport one of the top double-play combinations in the valley in team captains Iim Shroyer and Greg Barrett. The pair has also delivered timely hits and chalked up daring base thefts during the early part of the season. Other strong points in the lineup are out- fielders Mike Sedler, Ralph Alden, and Ron Kincaid. Batting 4-5-6 on the score card, the three have been consistent in base hits and RBI production. Richard Gawlowski, a catcher with a throwing arm few runners dare to test, and Greg Hubbell at the hot corner have also aided the team effort. A lack of pitching depth and erratic fielding contributed to the early season 3-6 record, but Coach Ruman feels that these problems will be solved with experience. The bulk of the Bobcat swimming strength lies in the freestyle ability of Mike Scheurich and Steve Mehag- ian's butterfly speed. Scheurich is a returning state cham- pion in the 50-yard freestyle. The senior battled four competitors to what was truly a photo-finish in the state meet before nabbing the championship. Mehagian, a four-year swimming letterman, is expected to make strong showings in his speciality, the 100-yard butterfly. Other key performers, as evidenced in the first three meets, will be lay Phillips, in the 100 and 200 yard freestyle, Tim Antrim in the 100- yard breaststroke, Ross Yancher in the 50-yard freestyle, and Ralph McCloskey in the 100-yard back- stroke. Tennis Coach Dave Silcox expresses nothing but confidence when talking about his 1972 Ten- nis squad. And with good reason. The 1971 tennis Bobcats won the West High invitational tourney, the Phoenix division championship, and the state AAA champion- ship. Last season was the tennis squad's fourth consecutive undefeated year in dual competition, the Coach Silcox sees nothing to prevent the team from making it tive. One reason tor optimism in 1972 lies in the powerful swing of Bruce Nichols. The fresh- man netman was the state individual champ in 1971, and this year, as a sophomore, Nichols is ranked second nationally in his age group. With Nichols pacing the team for three more seasons, the prospects tor Bobcat tennis are bright. But Coach Silcox has more material than Nichols. Expected to be repeating state champs in the doubles category are junior Clark Rorbach and senior Dick Gibson, and other returning lettermen are Scott Gan, Charlie Iohnson, Andy Cloud, and Neil Weisman. By the end ot this year we will have 54 consecutive dual-meet wins, Coach Silcox remarked. We don't plan to lose one this year. pf' 7 Eiilii id 'Qtr 5 33111 , ty?v+ x 'al fi f Z 'tiff V. Or maybe it's the warmth of her personality which allows her to take a personal interest in students. Or maybe it's not either. The best thing about Laura Mae is herself-a kind, warm, selfless, beautiful human being. Her job is to keep Building 9 tidy, which she does well. But that isn't half of it. When situations are tense and yearbook deadlines near, Laura Mae appears with a witty re- mark to remind us that life is too short to spend much of it in worry. She has given so much to us, and we want to give something in return. So, Laura Mae, this book with all our efforts is for you. We couldn't have done it without you. Eff?
