I lEDllCATllCPlXl to Boom! of Eo'ucotz'ofz of Phoenix Union Hzgh School Disztrict The many schools under the guidance of the Phoenix Union High School's Board of Education have increased the burdens ot it's members. To these mem- bers We dedicate this, the first edition ot the Central High Cat Tracks. lt is to these people, we owe our thanks for the very school in which We live and learnp for Without their support, our Central High School could not or would not have become a reality. Through the years our system has come to depend upon their guidance and inspiration. On their principles it will continue to grow and progress. We, the students of Central High School, are grateful for the integrity and Wisdom of our Board of Education. We Wish particularly to pay our tribute and appreciation to Mrs. F. A. Bons for the splendid, devoted, outstanding service which she has unselfishly rendered our school system for the past twenty-five years. .,-. K Iwi MX? ,,,,..--v-- '--' 1 4, X . . NXxL , 'K QQEFRWX. Long before construction of the school had begun, our administration spent many long hours planning and preparing for our Cen- tral so that We Bobcats could have the very best. Under their expert guidance, We students are led to adulthood-to positions as responsible citizens of the community. ln this first year, it was especially important that Central High have a good start in setting up high standards and traditions, which will be followed in years to come. Our administration has done an outstanding job in helping us achieve these goals. c wzfi., I 5.. , ' 1 Lx F 3 1 it i ,J5'5' ,,., Q I ,. i 5 . . W if ii., ' 'Wk Left to Right: M. UFQQ U Class of '59 The Iunior Class of '59 has the distinction of being the first class that will graduate from Central High. Though small in number, the juniors have been well represented in school activities and in student government. The class had two main money-raising projects. They sold pop-corn balls and volunteered to pay class dues. The class officers, who were Steve Silver, President lim Gafke, Vice-Presidentp Lynda Mor- ris, Secretaryp and Margaret Harford, Treasurer, along with the Class Council and the Advisory Board, worked hard to support their class and to promote loyalty among the juniors. Several juniors received various awards and recognition this year, all of which go towards making their class a leading one. They are fortunate in being the first class for two years, since there were no seniors at Central this year. The highlight of the year for the juniors was the Surfer's Swing , the junior class swim- ming and dancing party. Held from 9-l2.UU P.M. on May 24th, the party at the Terrace Club was a complete success. All in all, their first year at Central was a rewarding one, and they are hoping that their last one will be equally successful. But, all this could not have been achieved with out adult lead- ership and helpfulness backing it up, and these qualities were generously' applied by their two willing and able sponsors-Mrs. B. H. Grevenberg and Mr. Edward Herzberg. A generous vote of thanks is dedicated to these sponsors by the juniors. Our Officers Steve Silver, President: Margaret Harford, Treasurer. Our Class was under the efficient and well handled guidance of Mr. Ioe Garcia and Mrs. Mabel Blue. The Sopho- more Class Council met almost every week to make important decisions on class matters. Various money raising projects were tackled by the class with immense success: the most outstanding of which was the Snow-Cone sale which netted over S100 in profit for the classes numerous activities. The highpoint of this year for our class was the big South Pacific Swing . A tremendous success, the dance featured such things as a Hawaiian orchestra-Kay Kalani and the Beach- combers, REAL Hula Dancers, and lets as souveniers. Refreshments were served by the P.T.A. All in all, the sophomore class has made this year a most successful one. This, though, has only come about because of the diligence and resourcefulness of our members. We have been a part of the origin of Central's traditions and have helped to establish a goal for future classes to achieve. Again We thank our sponsors: Mr. Garcia and Mrs. Blue, for without their helpfulness, the year could not have been so beneficial. 7 ' Q Y t 3 I 1 . . . , tt til. it f OUR OFFICERS-Left to Right: Tony Iohnson, President: Ann Rarnenotsky, Vice President, Bar- bara Kelly, Secretaryy Doris Bail- ey, Treasurer. Class of '61 The freshman class, under the sponsorship of Mr. Kendall and Mrs. Vera Swanger, have gotten off to a fine start this year. They have the distinction of being the largest class here at Central with an enrollment of over 600 Bobcats. The frosh class sponsored two successful activities this year. One was a carwash held at several service stations in the Phoenix area, their second project was a delightful and refreshing ice cream sale. Early this year the freshman class held its elections. Chosen to lead the Bobkittens were A. I. Staples-President, Ann Kavocovich-Vice President, Sharon Messmore-Secretary, Barbara Kulik-Treasurer. Many freshman entered sports, music, dramatic productions, and other school activities this year: which just goes to show that even the frosh class can get into the swing of things and show a lot of school spirit and loyalty. Hats off to a fine job done by Central's youngest bobcats. FRESHMAN CLASS OFFICERS are from left to right: Ann Kcxvocovich, Barbara Kulik, Sharron Messmore, and A. I. At the beginning of the year, the present staff was selected from the enrollees. Most of its members had little or no previous experience in yearbook production. In addition to this, and to add to the confusion, clubs, organizations, etc. had to be formed, of- ficers elected, and various other phases of school life had to be organized before annual coverage could be started. Photography equipment had to be purchased, class pictures had to be made, themes selected, and leaders named: all of which contributed to delaying and handicapping the staff. During the early period, the publications class was oriented on the different skills required to put together a high quality yearbook. After this initial step was taken, things began to roll. Under the able sponsorship of Harry L. Crockett, a final staff was chosen. Selected to lead the group were: Editor-in-:chief Ron Lundeen Business Manager Iudy Moore Section Editors Carol Melander-Faculty - Sharon Brosseau-Classes Sally Coltrin-School Life - Mike Weiss-Sports Ioan Harris-Organizations - Nancy Foster-Photography Carol Bornmann-Art Staff Stcdf Members Ierry Boeh, Ioyce Carrick, Sharon Clark, Ioyce Greenway, Claudia Iohnson, Dennis Iosifek, Iudy Loftfield, Doug McVay, Iackie Runge, Nancy Tisdale, Linda Williams Art Staff Kathi Gates, Roger Long, Mike Daniels Under the direction of the section editors each part of the annual was given elaborate care in its composition. Slowly, but surely, the yearbook came to life. Hundreds of pictures had to be taken before a complete coverage of the school year's events could be given in our annual. Later in the year the student body chose the name of Cat Tracks to be the official symbol of the Central High yearbook. Not long after the name was chosen, the various sections of the volume fell into place rapidly. That is the story of how this 1958 edition of the Central High Cat Tracks got into your hands this very moment. We owe a deep vote of thanks and gratitude to these people who have worked so hard to put out this book. We also wish to show our appreciation to their sponsor, Mr. Harry L. Crocket, for without his supervision and advice, such an undertaking would not be possible. We, at Central, feel we have accomplished much this year. One of the major projects this year was our American Field, better known as the Foreign Exchange Program. To enlighten the students on just exactly what Foreign Exchange is we had an assembly devoted to this topic. After this, we sold stocks in lnternational Goodwill. With much cooperation by both students and faculty, we made S67l2.00. The clubs on Central's campus wanted an active part in this program, so they all worked together to add to the Foreign Exchange Fund. To end the campaign, the student body participated in a magazine drive, with some of the money going to the Foreign Exchange Fund, and some to our Student Body Fund. One of the big thrills of the year was the ratification of our Constitution which took place on April 22nd, after five long, hard months. We feel that this is a very unique constitution and that application of it will prove very successful. One of the first things we did in organizing our student was to form four committees: Election, Assembly, Traditions, and Social. Under the supervision ofthe Traditions Committee, we had a terrific Rodeo Day. Students dressed western and some even rode horses to school. The student body officers had the pleasure of attending the Arizona State Student Council Convention held December 6th and 7th at West High. They also attended meetings of the Salt River Presidents and Vice-Presidents Association, and benefited much from experience gained here. These are just a few of the many projects and activities that student government has participated in. Election Committee The Election Committee plays an important role in the administration of student government by helping with elections and other events of this nature held here at Central. A hard working organization, the Election Committee was selected from many applicants last fall. We owe a great deal of thanks to this committee for seeing that our Central elections are run fairly and efficiently. Ballots n' Bright Ideas The Traditions Committee is a unique group here at Central. Since it is our first year, many traditions needed to be established, both to build morale and interest in the activities and functions of our school. These people, working together in the best interests of Central are the ones who carry out this task. Among their accomplishments we can list the Miss Victory Contest, Color Day, and Maverick Day. These are but only a tew of their achievements. They definitely deserve a tip-o-the-hat from us Bobcats. Meeting every other Week, the committee plans and O-K's permission for social events and many other phases of Bobcat extra-curricular activity. Again We thank them for their diligence and thoughtfulness in Weighing each event. Service To Central An assembly does not, just, come off. lt takes careful planning and selection before a high quality program is presented before the student body: and that is where the assembly committee comes in. This committee maps out assemblies for the Whole yearp weighing each assembly to see that it Will promote better moral standards and instill thought or interest in the minds of the students for Whose benefit these productions are given. We owe our sincerest gratitude to the mem- bers Who make up this committee for giving us the fine assemblies that We, the student body, have been able to witness and enjoy this year. Qur Pom-Pon Line The first Central High Pom Pon line filled crowds with spark and pep in sport events and assemblies. Their cheerful smiles and attractive costumes, along with their precision dancing, added much to the school spirit and interest from both students and parents as well. Their participation in many assemblies, football and basketball games, the rodeo parade, and special events attracted attention to them as being one of the finest pom pon lines in the state. Tryouts were held late in November. From a group of sixty girls, eight top notch dancers and four alternates were chosen as the first pom pon line ever to represent Central High. ln addition, a class of twenty girls was also picked. The girls designed their own costumes and created their own dances. The traditions which these girls have established this year will be passed on through time. An ambitious and talented group, they have appeared at all Pep assemblies, football games, basketball games, and, in general, at any event which has required pep and school spirit. ln the Rodeo Parade, the cheerleaders presented a fine representation ot we Bobcats. After tryouts, which took place this tall, the girls met every night after school to Work up new routines and to practice old ones. The Cat Pack started off the season with a triumph over the Scottsdale Beavers, 13-0. Half- back Al Heller and Brent Smith scored each on short run plays. Central scored the only points of the game in the first quarter. Next the Bobcats fought a hard game with the North High l.V., but lost a tough decision, 13-0. At Phoenix College the Cats encountered a rough Phoenix Union l.V. team dropping the contest, 19-6. Al Moutran's 20-yard pass to Carl Bornhauser gave Central its only score. A week later the Pack traveled to Tucson where they displayed excellent sportsmanship and gave Pueblo a rough time with Pueblo winning 20-13. The Bobcats then met West High I.V. at Montgomery Stadium where they played one of their finest games of the season and showed West that they are a pretty rugged team. Brent Smith and Al Heller eached scored 2 touchdowns for the highlights of the game. ln the third quarter West had the lead 20-l4, but the brave Central team opened up in the last quarter with a burst of 20 points to win. After the rain cancelled one game the Cats met with the Mesa I.V. where they had a terrific spirit but unfortunately lost 27-6. Next year these boys should be really in there pitching and will probably' come out with a fine record. LV. Bobcat Orchestra We, the students of Central High School, owe our l958 Bobcat Orchestra a vote of thanks for the fine work they have done in that field. Along with promoting interest in music, this group meets to develop togetherness and in one sense of the word, teamwork. Under the direction of Harvey Zorn, this Bobcat band has helped to fill in an empty spot in the life of Centralites. Music Glacldens Nearly two hundred young musicians are learning to play band and orchestra instruments at Central High School this year. There are classes in beginning instruments during the first sem- ester of each year. ln many cases the school is able to loan instruments to serious and respons- ible students. After one year in an instrument class, the average student who has practiced with regu- larity and thought, is promoted to the cadet band for continued training. Many freshmen students who have studied their instrument privately' for a year or two, are assigned directly to the Concert Band or the Orchestra their first year in high school. Every' musician must pass an audition before being registered for the Concert Band or Orchestra. MADRIGAL SINGERS-tMadrigulsl-left to right. Our Concert and Swing Bands The Swing Band is made up of more advanced players of the Concert Band. This small, but talented band, plays for basketball games, assemblies, track meets, and special concerts around the valley in elementary schools. Central High can be very proud of the progress our Concert Band, Swing, and Orchestra have made in this first year here as a Bobcat group. Many achievements by our band rank it with the top bands in the state, Our Concert Band received an above average rating by officials at the Arizona State College in Tempe. They participated in the Spring Concert, held in Central's Gymnasium on March 28, playing everything from Beethoven to Mozart. Along with the other sections of the music department they presented and interesting program to a full house . The Concert Band along with the Majorettes also performed in the Phoenix laycee's Rodeo Parade on March l3th. With their pre- cision marching and playing, the band made an outstanding impression on Valley residents and tourists. We Bobcats owe our Concert Band, Swing Band, and Orchestra, all under the direction ot Harvey Zorn, an appreciative vote of thanks for their contribution to the moral and musical in- terests of the Central High student body.
