Seniors who maintain a 3.0 grade point average and juniors holding a 3.5 grade point average are eligible for the club. The Old Beta Club consists of those seniors, who as juniors, were able to pull a 3.5 average. The New Beta Club is one of the largest ever at Central and is made up of 160 members. Band Director, Mr. David Carter. “Oh, When the Saints Go Marchin’ In!” The ““Boogie-Woogie Bugle Boy” is alive and well in the High Point Central Stage Band. The band plays predominantly music from the Big Band Era, reviving such jazz greats as Duke Ellington and Benny Good- man. Band members submit applications to band director, Mr. Carter. He then selects the Stage Band on the basis of playing ability. Only those with special talent make up the High Point Central Stage Band. 24 The Stage Band plays mostly for civic groups such as the Kiwanis Club and the American Businessmen’s Association. The band has also played as entertainment at the Top of the Mart. Each year, the band parti- cipates in a Stage Band convention at a North Caro- lina college or university. This year’s Stage Band also performed as a part of the Bicentennial celebration in Greensboro. Pursed lips and a diaphragm full of air create the sweet sound from these muted trumpets.
