October 12, 1973, was a day when both dreams and floats were built and destroyed. Hours of back-breaking work were climaxed by one day of adding finishing touches which were in some cases rewarded but which in others went down the drain. Visitors from Tomlinson and Ferndale, along with returning alumni from various colleges, added to the general hubbub. Even the youngest visitor is intrigued by the first place GAA float. one, Hayworth meticulously paints a picket fence for the junior class A xhibit. “must” for many floats is the Bison, made of plywood, insulation, and plenty of black paint. 28 Homecoming Day

Ae The varsity and junior varsity cheerleaders served as major supporters of the football and basketball teams, while encouraging students with their original projects. During the football season, the girls sponsored numerous “days.” The traditional ‘‘Hat Day” was held along with ‘Sock It to ’Em Day” (stu- dents sported wild socks) and ‘Make ’Em See Red Day” (red and white were worn to psych the Raiders). The cheerleaders sold blue HPC derbies as their money-making project. Interest in the “days” dwindled during basketball season. “Turn ’Em Inside Out Day” on which students wore shirts inside out drew little response. The cheerleaders attended all basketball games and generated enthusiasm throughout the crowd. Diane Frazier escorts Jeff Patton as the football team is introduced to the stu- dent body.
