Members felt that High Point’s busing situation had improved due to public attitudes. The Board gave its approval for the new English curriculum and worked with Central and Andrews on the subject of exam exemptions. They were also confronted with the finalizing of plans for the new football stadium. A new junior and senior high may possibly be built at the same site as the stadium. Among other concerns of the Board were the status of local teacher’s salaries during the national wage and price freeze, a revamping in the school’s calendar, and plans to hire new public relations personnel. Mrs. Evelyn Thompson was School Board Chairman. As superintendent of city schools, Dr. Dean B. Pruette continued to serve as a liaison between the School Board, whose meetings he attended, and employees, such as teachers hired by the High Point City Schools. His assistant is Dr. Lloyd Thayer. Other city school officials were Dr. Virginia Lewis, super- Dr. Lloyd Thayer and Dr. Dean B. Pruette visor of secondary education; Walter Jones, purchasing agent; Jack Cox, superintendent of building and grounds; Bernie M. Sheffield, library co-ordinator; A. J. Simeon, athletic director. At the head of Central’s administration was principal Jerry G. Shaver. His main responsibility was to keep Central a working and teaching institution, beneficiary to students and teachers alike. Kenneth Dickens served as Mr. Shaver’s assis- tant. He handled all busing problems and made out the sched- ule for all assemblies. As Dean, Ralph Vance took care of attendance records and served as director of summer school. Walter Jones, Virginia Lewis, Bernie Sheffield, A. J. Shaver, Principal Administration 161 Secretaries and Guidance Counselors help run This year as always, the general office secretaries handled a massive amount of business affairs and correspondence with notable efficiency. Mrs. Johnsie Jackson, Mrs. Doris Teague (in general office), and Mrs. Alice Dameron (in Dean’s office) performed as the miraculous trio that straightened out money matters from class rings to instructional fees, kept endless school records, checked in and out migrating students, and in general, did more than their share of ‘‘busy work” to keep the school in running order. The office trio, however, was broken up when Mrs. Jackson retired on December 17, 1971, after forty-seven years of faithful service, having begun her involvement with Central when the school was located on the current Post Office site on South Main Street. Her familiar face, quick smile, and ready answers were immediately missed by students and staff alike. Beginning in January, after Mrs. Jackson’s retirement, Mrs. Dameron moved into the general office to assist Mrs. Teague and Mrs. Louise Jones became the new secretary in the Dean’s office. Mrs. Johnsie Jackson has efficiently served Central for 47 years as a secretary, but was no longer with us after December 17. 162 Secretaries school and students effectively and efficiently Mrs. Evelyn Harris — Guidance Mrs. Sally Maxwell — Guidance Mrs. Ethel Hughes — Guidance One of the busiest places at Central was the guidance office where Mrs. Evelyn Harris, Mrs. Ethel Hughes, and Mrs. Sa!ly Maxwell made up the efficient staff. Students were alphabetically divided up between the three counselors, each taking care of any difficulties that her stu- dents might be faced with and also explaining all major achievement tests to them. Seniors confronted with college applications went to their guidance counselors who filled o:¢ their transcripts and wrote recommendations. Sophomores and Juniors had individual appointments with their counselors in the spring to register for courses for the next year. The guidance counselors helped each student choose the right subject. The guidance office was well equipped with information on job opportunities and colleges. Pamphlets were placed in the racks outside the office. College manuals were available for any interested student and use of the materials was encour- aged. In addition to the regular services and the co-sponsoring of the fall College Day and the spring Career Day, this year the guidance office brought in a group of medical students from the University of North Carolina to talk with Central students who had drug problems or questions about drugs. Names of students involved were kept in confidence. Guidance 163 “Cleanliness next to godliness’’ — Cafeteria and Locsin” CAFETERIA PERSONNEL: Elizabeth Wofford, Alice Key, Marsha Braunstein, Isabelle White, Mary Irene Fowler. Two groups of personnel who contribute to any school’s functioning are the cafeteria and the maintenance staffs: each often do their work without much recognition, but are vital to each school day. Feeding an average of 500 people a day seems an awesome task, but it was all in a day’s work for Mrs. Mary Irene Fowler, cafeteria manager, and her staff. According to federal stan- dards, a plate lunch, which met one-third of a person’s daily nutritional requirement, was available to students. Although it wasn’t accompanied by tinkling bells and pushed in on a cart, ice cream did reappear on the lunchroom scene for those buying the plate lunch. Serving lunch has been only one of the School Food Service’s functions. This service assists clubs and classes with dinners and also arranges athletic banquets. A new responsibility has been planning the coffees for parents of students on Wednesday mornings. Long hours of work typified the conscientious labor of the maintenance staff. With many responsibilities besides keeping the school clean, the staff still contributed other invaluable services to the school. Keeping a watchful eye and ear out for unusual disturbances was the job of the night watchman who also kept the annual staff company during the night hours. Cafeteria Manager, Mary Irene Fowler, works enthusiastically to pro- vide Central students with a balanced diet. 164 Cafeteria Lester Gunnell — night watchman ; Grover Colbert — maintenance MAINTENANCE STAFF: Brent Wilkes, Lindsay Tyson, Helen Swienney, Sophia Ricks. Maintenance 165 Focus on self-discipline, technique in Arts Central’s Music and Art Department offered students an opportunity to express themselves creatively through partici- pation in chorus, band, orchestra, or art. Mrs. Greene directed Choralettes, an all-girl group made up primarily of sophomores; A Cappella, a mixed choir from all three classes; and Centralaires, the most advanced group. These choruses not only entertained at Central, but also performed at Westchester Mall, the Arts Council building, and in Greens- boro with the Symphony. Workshops and contests gave mem- bers a chance to evaluate themselves and learn. Only one major band group was formed under the direction of Mr. Carter; this band marched during half time at all home football games, presented concerts, and attended various con- tests. A select group of band members made up the stage band. A lack of participation also affected the orchestra, resulting in a smaller group than in previous years. Conducted by Mr. Ruth, the orchestra also performed at contest this year which was held in Salisbury. Some members were selected to repre- sent the school for all-state orchestra. New to Central this year was the art teacher, Mrs. Lane. She instructed her students in the fundamentals of drawing, mod- eling, and work with other media. Detailed studies of famous artists provided insight into the field of art. Easily identified by the rhythmic ‘‘tick, tack’’ of the type- writers and adding machines, the Business Education Depart- ment sought to instruct students in typing, shorthand, book- keeping and accounting. Headed by Miss Sandra Medford, teachers strove to prepare students in all necessary skills for future jobs. Cooperative Office Occupations, Preparatory Office Occu- pations, and Office Machines offered on-the-job working op- portunities to the individual student in addition to regular academic requirements. Designed to prepare the student for office work immediately following graduation, these courses achieved their goal by placing students in part-time jobs during the afternoon. This placement program resulted from co-oper- ative relations between the school and the High Point business community. At the end of the year students’ employers were honored with a banquet, further expressing appreciation for training opportunities. Business 167 All the world is a stage as students The one course required of all classes was English. As in previous years different aspects of literature and grammar were stressed in each class. Seniors f ound themselves reading Chauc- er, Shakespeare, and a multitude of other English authors. Some classes included the study of world literature. The study of American Literature involved junior classes. The Scarlet Letter, Moby Dick, The Adventures of Huckle- berry Finn and other classics were discussed as well as ethnic literature. Sophomores covered the basics of grammar and writing forms, such as poetry, prose, and drama. Junior and sophomore classes worked in preparation for the new English curriculum which will be introduced next year. After months of careful planning and study, representatives of both Andrews and Central’s English departments formu- lated this new curriculum. Twenty-six courses ranging from “Mysteries and Ghosts,” to the ‘‘Bible as Literature’ will be offered. “Poetry NOW!” presented in January offered dramatiza- tions of contemporary poetry to enrich a student’s under- standing of poetry. The professional acting company tried to make this a unique emotional experience for students. Due to lesser demand, only first and second year of Latin are offered. French and Spanish classes used language labs consisting of individual headsets connected to a central control as well as the traditional grammar and vocabulary drills. These labs en- abled participants to become more fluent by listening to and repeating after a native speaker. Second semester, a few se- lected fourth-year French students began an independent study program during the class period. Students taking Latin concentrated on reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary rather than on speaking. During National Language Week, the department sponsored various activities; students decorated the language hall, dressed in native costumes, presented skits and songs, and sold French and Spanish desserts in the cafeteria to raise money for a scholarship for an outstanding language student. Foreign Language 171 Home Ec institutes new, more useful Courses The Home Economics Department for the first time this year added a new selection of courses to the standard two semester course, Home Economics |. The standard course is a prerequisite to the new course offerings which include Inter- personal Relationships, Child Development, Clothing and Textiles, Food and Nutrition, and Housing and Home Fur- nishings. These new courses are designed to offer home eco- nomics students an opportunity to delve further into specific areas of interest. The department believes that the new in- depth studies have been a valuable addition to the home economics curriculum. The basic curriculum of Home Economics | and II remains the same and both courses are available to males as well as females. They involve special units on cooking and sewing, illustrating the practical value of the home economics curric- ulum. Both units allow students to express their creativity in areas that will be of great benefit in life. The home economics curriculum is supplemented by films, discussions, visual aids and field trips in an endeavor to offer High Point Central students valuable training in the practical facets of life. Where was the only place in school you could have total silence, no one chewing gum, and books? The library. Yes, the library offered a student a place of peace and quiet for research and reading. It made available this year two microfilm readers with 36 rolls of microfilm. The 36 microfilms included “Atlantic,” ‘“Audabon Magazine,’ ‘‘New Republic,” ‘’Satur- day Review,” and ‘’Time’’ magazines covering various years. -Over a five-year period the library has gained approximately five thousand new books. Miss Johnson, head librarian, said in a PEMICAN interview that space was her most outstanding problem. She expressed hope that sometime soon a library would be built as a second floor to the existing cafeteria building or an expansion could be made to the present library. Miss Johnson said that with the increased traffic and wider use of the library students should have enough room to breathe. She and Miss Byrd helped students from 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. with assistance onlv from the library club members. Math teachers at Central provided students with a strong foundation in this subject. Students were involved in three different types of study: general math courses, which included business and consumer math; other progressive courses, involving algebra and ge- ometry; and more challenging ones, including trigonometry and analytic geometry courses. Students at Central were all encouraged to learn the im- portance of logical thinking, accurate work, and total concen- tration. To facilitate reaching these goals, teachers primarily used traditional techniques and employed the ever-important blackboard and over-head projector. Individual a nd group problem-solving exercises occupied most class sessions in ad- dition to the traditional deluge of homework. In some classes, notably analytic geometry, taught by Miss Gail Harris, teachers experimented with independent study sessions, designed to make more effective use of class time and to limit homework. Long range assignments were made and then the student took the responsibility of learning; the teacher became an advisor, not a dispenser of knowledge. Math 175 Girls infiltrate shop in revenge for male Under the supervision of Mrs. Frye, the Occupational Edu- cation Department offered several programs for the student who planned a career in business after high school or college. Courses included in the department program were Distributive Education (DE), Industrial Co-operative Training (ICT), and Co-operative Office Occupations (COO). The basic difference in the three courses was in the type of employment. Juniors and seniors participating in the programs scheduled classes in the morning and were employed by firms in the High Point area in the afternoon. While in school they fulfilled graduation requirements with courses in English, foreign lan- guage, science, and history and studied business relationships and communications and sales distribution and development. In this way the student acquired both theoretical and practical knowledge in his prospective vocation. More specialized courses in vocational arts included Metal Technology, Woodworking, Drafting, Small Motors, and Aero- Space Education. Auto Mechanics and Bricklaying were taught at William. Penn where facilities existed. In keeping with the current focus on women’s lib, a few brave girls became active in shop and drafting this year. The classroom phase includes movies, discussions, and skill tests for glare recovery, depth perception, and visual activity to instruct and prepare students for safe driving. Students spend 6 of the 18 hours of “behind-the-wheel” driving, and the remaining 12 hours are spent in observation. New drivers learn proper driving tech- niques, habits, and skills from instructors Mr. Myers, and Mr. Shields. Both physical and mental development were stressed in gym classes. Students began the year by taking a physical fitness test that measured their own ability against national standards. Team sports such as basketball, football, field- hockey, and volleyball required much physical activity and encouraged co-operation through team effort and sportsman- ship. Tennis, ping-pong, archery, wrestling, and other sports developed individual skills. Physical fitness tests were given again at the end of the year. The de- partment was under the leadership of Miss Louisa Hatch. Films, maps, and supplementary books were used to make history seem more real to the student. Current events were incorporated to parallel present events with past ones. Psy- chology and sociology classes studied relationships with others and the development of man, while economics and democracy classes explored business theories and the workings of our national government. A trip to Williamsburg was offered to selected U.S. History classes as a means of furthering their understanding of colonial America. Due to a lack of enthusiasm, however, the trip was canceled. A new curriculum is in the planning stages for future classes at Central. The change will be in co-operation with the State Department and will provide a broader basis for history courses. The two general areas for high school courses will be cultural history and contemporary history. Under these topics will be provided varied approaches from which the students will make their choice of study. 182 Social Studies Bill Dameron — World and U.S. History, Football, Baseball, Civitans Miss Louisa Hatch — U.S. History, English 111 slated Social Studies Department changes Paul Hutchins — Psych., U.S. History, FCA, Football, Wres- tling Miss Eleanor Tapp — United States History, Government, Beta Club Michael Pierce — World History, Economics, NFL, Senior Class Mrs. Sylvia Cates — U.S. History, English I!1, Dra- matics, Cheerleading 4 fog ” thea “o6 dears 183 Awaiting the big day, sophomores practice Janice Adams Steve Adams Vickie Adams Dennis Albertson Max Aldridge Elizabeth Alford Bill Allen Keith Allen Sandra Allen Delia Alston Julie Amos Lin Amos Mary Amos Mel Amos James Archie John Arsenault Sheila Ashburn Kamella Atkins Donna Aufdemberge Patricia Auman Bob Averett Cathy Ayscue James Baker Mary Barber Patty Barnes Shirley Barnes Ricky Batten Robert Beaver Steve Bolinsky Frank Bencini Jasper Bennette Brutus Biles Karen Blake Cindy Bland Karen Bohannon Steve Bolick For many months prior to the start of school, a student hoped for that September first when he became a sophomore. He wanted to be able to say, ‘’| am in high school and | attend Central.” However, when the beginning of the year came, the stu- dent’s views changed. He was no longer so anxious about the year. Instead, he was fearful. First, the sophomore had a horror of the school’s size. Getting lost and being late for his classes was not unusual because of this. Next, the student greatly feared the giant seniors. As the student got into the year and made new friends, he began to enjoy himself. He got his driver’s license soon and enjoyed many new experiences. The sophomore became in- volved in his school work and activities. He had money-making projects, such as selling calendar towels, and other school functions to take part in. He became part of the student government and sports. He became a true part of the school. Soon his sophomore year came to a Close and he had his junior year to look forward to. His end was very different from his beginning. They were no longer sophomores and were just one step away from the senior title. Juniors began getting involved — service clubs, student government, dramatics, academic clubs, as well as sports, were all invaded by students who wanted to participate. The year began with the junior class float tying for second place in the homecoming festivities. That night they were well represented, both in the homecoming court and on the playing field. During the course of the year, juniors took college boards and the National Merit Exams, carried on a money-making project, and eagerly awaited the arrival of their Class ring. Many juniors discovered that as the year progressed, their courses got harder instead of easier. In English classes, some struggled through the ornate language of THE SCARLET LETTER and the symbolism of MOBY DICK while others previewed the new English curriculum for next year by studying controversial and ethnic literature. Students drew maps and attempted to solve the problems of the past in their U. S. History classes. Electives, such as chemistry, math, and foreign languages completed the curriculum for some juniors. Made more aware of life at Central during the sophomore year, juniors pressed forward to the future. 192 Juniors Ada—Bak Hell’s Angels’ leader Mrs. Roberts tries to convince her students that the handwriting on the wall is merely orbital dot notation. with red or blue stones are chosen Ray Baker Bonnie Ball Gaye Banks Louise Banks Debra Barnes Debbie Bartley Kenneth Belton Rob Bencini Camilla Bennett Barbara Benson Thomas Bethea Florence Betts Chery! Some will say their eighteenth birthday and some will say graduation made their senior year a memorable one. Not many will remember half of the good times, private jokes, or terrific friends that made the year what it was. A lot of students tried their best to make this school a better place for all. Without their efforts, this year could not have been as eventful as it was. The students raised controversy over exam exemptions, the prom, faculty, service clubs, drug traffic, and other things that effected the school with changes for the better. Not many seniors will forget weekend excursions to fa- vorite colleges (Carolina. ..). The interviews were a pain but oh (!) the rest of that weekend. Many awaited college accep- tance with eager anticipation. Others planned for their future jobs in the outside world or contemplated marriage or military obligations. Every year hopefully brought a beach trip; Ocean Drive was usually the destination. One wild week of parties, friends, and “raising hell’’ went on. Then some went again after graduation and another week of the same occurred. Some kids lived for Easter and graduation. The class of ‘72 did not leave Central with any earth-shat- tering changes, but all the little changes were what made this year different—special—unique. Since college represents total development in many areas, High Point College strives to allow freedom to encounter such training through a student oriented program.
