FLORENCE SHAW Enthusiasm was the key word in the sophomoreis year. Under the very able counseling of their class adviser, Mrs. Florence Shaw, the sophomores proceeded with their many activities. With their money-making project, the magazine sale, behind them, they looked forward to the Sophomore Prom. The sophomores looked back on their year through rose- colored glasses, for they had experienced a wonderful year under the efficiency of their officers. They are, pictured left to right: Libby Iohnson, secretary, Patsy Garrison, treasurer, Kay Moore, president, Irene Whitley, vice president. 82 SOPHOMORES joYI:E ADAMS SYIJII. The organization co-operated with the National Honor Society in presenting College Day, and as their money-raising project the Beta Club sold pennants to members of the student body. ln April the National Beta Club conven- tion met in Asheville. Delegates from all parts of the state met there to talk over problelms and exchange ideas. Through the Beta Club journal, a monthly publlication, members learned of the activities of similar clubs all over the nation. After a service marked with beauty and simplicity, twelve seniors were inducted into the Honor Society. The officers are pictured to the left: Carolyn Roberts, treasurer, Tiny Neely, president, .Iimmie Casey, vice-president, Sarah Johnson, secretary. Having one of the highest honors bestowed upon them, the old and new members of the Society were determined to match the achieve- ments of former years. Their first project was the sale of stationery, which added considerable revenue to their treasury. They joined forces with the Beta Club in sponsoring College Day. In the spring, the induction of an additional number of outstanding juniors was carried out with the usual impressive dignity. The presenta- tion of the N.H.S. Service Award brought to a close the 1953-1954 activities of the organization. Our band, with its high-stepping majorettes, its fancily-dressed drum major, and its faithful mem- bers keeping steady time, were on the football field for every game of the season. Clad in spanking new uniforms, the band delighted the spectators with a top-rate performance at every half-time. Capably directed by Mr. David Carter, the band organized quickly with Charles Vaughn as president, Basil Freeman, vice president, Meryle Pope, secretary, Frank Collins, treasurer, and Sandy Mendenhall, sergeant-at-arms. The 1958 Black Bison football team had three strikes against them from the beginning of the season, as there had been no victories in High Point since 1951. However, Coaches Tony Simeon and ,lim Hayworth had much to be proud of by the end of the season as the Bison chalked up an impressive slate of victories to tie with Greensboro for second place in the Western Conference. There were 12 returning lettermen from the 1952 squad, and, along with the reserves and junior varsity from the previous year, the Bison produced excellent sportsmanship and team- work, surpassing a weak passing attack with a mighty ground force and clever deception. Opening their season in a road game with Beidsville, the Bison overcame their handicap of inexperience as they downed the Golden Lions by a one-touchdown margin. Spectators witness- ed the first home win at Albion Millis Stadium since 1951 as they watched the Bison defeat the Gastonia Green Wave. The Bison received their most severe defeat in a non-conference game at Durham with the Bulldogs, but came back triumphantly the fol- lowing week to defeat the Burlington Bulldogs at home. In Gharlotte's Memorial Stadium, the Bison trampled the Wildcats by a hard-fought thirteen- point margin. Homecoming brought the Maroon Devils from Asheville to High Point, where they bowed to the Bison amid the excitement of the enormous homecoming crowd. Unexpected snow postponed the long-await- ed meeting with our arch-rivals, the Whirlies of Greensboro. This proved to be disastrous, for the following week the Bison unsuccessfully met the defending conference champions from R. I. Reynolds. Although the Bison were defeated by one touchdown, they displayed unequaled spirit and determination. This was at the same time the most exciting and the most disappointing game of the season. The enthusiasm of the team and spectators was far below normal as the Bison finally met and were defeated by Greensboro's Whirlies. The final game was a disappointing conclusion to an otherwise successful season. V, L. Hill and Donald Scott hold an object which is very familiar to them-one of the less battered footballs. In the Basketball opener with Statesville, the Black Bison Cagers, coached by A. J. Simeon, showed their enthusiasm and scoring power by racing to a 20-point victory, led by co-captains Harold Gill and jimmy Stretchv Burgess. This offensive power was successful in marching over Hanes, Thomasville, and Salisbury, but was stop- ped by Asheboro in the teamis first defeat of the season. The team snapped right back, however, to stop Reynolds in an overtime victory. The lack of defense was shown in the next two games when Charlotte Central and Asheville scored decisive wins over the Bison. After a win over Gastonia, the High Pointers again were the underdogs in the next two games, losing to Bur- lington, and, for the second time, to Charlotte. In the next contest, one of the most exciting games of the season, the Bison won over the Asheville Maroons. David Smith 131 9. Jerry Sowers 161 f. Tommy Lewis 141 g. Richard Mason 181 f Now, with a conference record of 4-4 and with hopes for a chance of qualifying for the AAA tournament, the Bison team put forth an all-out effort to keep in the running, but was unsuccessful for the better part of the remaining season. High Point was again topped by re- taliating Burlington, Reynolds, and Gastonia, and by its most bitter rival, Greensboro which eked out on the Bison home court, a first win, and later, a second victory. A narrow win on the home court over Salisbury was the conclud- ing triumph of the Bison Basketballers for the 1954 season. Harold Gill, with a 15.3 average, and jimmy Burgess, with 14.3, took honors for the team, Harold was All-Conference selection and jimmy was chosen for the Kiwanis North Carolina All- Star team, which played the South Carolina Kiwanis team March 12. Fran Myers High Point High School's 1953 Homecoming Queen. Blessed with fair weather the ingenious creators of the Homecoming Parade were able to produce floats that drew tremendous applause from both participants and spectators. Themes of the floats were varied, with decorations ranging from popular songs such as Dragnet , left, to Operation Victory , right. While a majority of the students decorated floats on the athletic field, the cheerleaders worked diligently at the stadium. The results of their efforts showed up favorably in the decorations on the fences and goal- posts at the game.
