They were there to greet the new girls in the fall and, as hig sisters, to help them over the first days. They were there to teach the Handhook groups: to advise on studies and examsg to eongratulate the new ottieers in the spring. They were every where a guiding hand was needed. But 'these Seniors had lighter moments too. 'l'hei voices issued from Holt as they gathered in the parlor for meetings and hull-sessions. Their faces fvlowed with ha J Jiness the niornino' of C'hristmas vaeation as thev serenaded 3 I I 3 . the student hody. Their feverish excitement over the Senior danee, and their relief ove heing guests at the Junior-Senior show them to he as gav and fun loving as any group of girls. 'l'hroughout the yearfleaders and friendsfthey played a major roll in the sehool life of every Saint llIary's girl. 24 BENIORS MARY JUANITA ANDERSON Raleigh, N. C. ' SPGRTS KICKBALI. was the first sport of the year. Sigma's came out on top after win- ning two games and tieing a third. The all star team, including six Mu's and four Sigma's: Bunn, Leitner, Clarke, VVhitaker, Grantham, Dysart, B. Moore, H. VVilliams, F. I.. Brooke, and Hirst. Ruth Hayes was a competent manager. HOCKEY came next with the Sigma,s still o11 top. Because of cold weather and vacations the final tournament game was not played until February. Selected all stars were: Hirst, Bass, Brooke, I . L., Smutney, VVillian1s, VVoodson, Cooper, F., and Talbot. Again two games were won and one tied. Anna Margaret Moomaw was the Manager. 75 BASKl'l'I'l5AI.I. hegan after Christmas and as usual found much enthusiasm among the seniors, juniors, and underclassmen alike. More gil'ls went out for this sport than for any other. Highlight of the season was the unforgettable trip to Fhapel Hill. The tonrnament consisted of mixed teams made up of girls from Carolina, Duke, YVoman's Uollege UV. C. to youl, Meredith, and Saint Mary's. Proudly Saint Mary's, the only .junior college represented, came away with first place honors. lNIu's won two games out of three. The all stars were: Ivilliams, H., Legg, K., Brooke, I . L., Grantham, Banks, YVhite, li., Hirst, Street, and Rylander. SVVIMMING those necessary five-hours-a semester-or-else demanded some of every- hody's time, hut quite a few risked looking water-soaked at dinner on Monday's and VVed- nesday's to earn a letter for life saving. VVho knows, mayhe you will he saved hy a Saint Mary's girl next summer at the beach! The girls you should scream to for help are: l'ou, Ivinslow, li., VVilliams, H., Hunsueker, Gregory, Bell, J. D., liaskervill, Moore, Ii., Morris, J., Chipley, Goerch, Y'Vade, Lane, Martin, III., Smith, M., and Rohin- son. Sara Stockton was swimnmg instructor. PING PUNG was the most successful minor sport this year with Barnie IVhite the champ and Anna Margaret Moomaw the runner up. And incidentally, the faculty took up ping pong avidly. YOI.I.l'1Y BALI. came in April. A large number of girls came out for it, especially the underclassmen. The Sigma,s won the exciting tournament. These earning stars were: Hirst, lVhite, B., Clarke, M. F., Brooke, F. L., Peoples, Everett, Smntney, and Anderson, A. S0l '1'l3AI.I. and TENNIS followed with lllllCll enthusiasm on all sides. In Class In the regular hi-weekly gym classes, exercises of all types were undertaken along with customary dance and game instructions. In the flexibility, tumhling, and Indian cluh routines we discovered muscles we never before knew we had! Saint Mary's oh- stacle course proved novel as well as heneficial to the girls. Skinnning along the halance heam and leaping over the leather huek, Brent Yvoodson completed the course in record- hrcaking time with iNIary Lynn Lewis a close second. 76 . N S. .Missy 'I , Q 5 f ? This included a wide choice of activities: skating, swinnning, hiking, softhall, riding, and howling. To the old girls Ivednesday was a day of interesting seriousness. Officers' Uandidate Uorps f0.l'.C.j was organized under the direction of Lt. Arthur I.. Kaltenhorn and Mrs. Vvilliain C. Guess. Divided into squads the girls practiced the old and learned tl1e new. Squad leade1's we1'e selected. Helena Vvilliains, Adelaide Butler, Charlotte Crawford, Lili Shaw, Jean Brooks, Katherine Legg, Mary Fox Clarke, Betsy Long, Betsy Thompson, 1'll'2lllCOS Bylander, and Betsy Blount drilled their groups well. The climax eaine in Deceniher with the drill contest. Eleven old girl and six new gi1'l squads competed. The squads led hy Helena and Foxie were chosen hest ofthe old groups and that of Private Thomas Morgan host of the new groups. Military drill continued tln'oughout the year. Adelaide Butler was chosen Vonn- pany COIIIIIIEUIKICF. Gradually all the new girls were initiated into the discipline of military drill. The original squad leaders wo1'ked hard with the new girls and some of the old. The boys from the ASTI'-ROTC unit from State College certainly put life into the YVednesday activities-and who will ever forget the caustic wit of Lieutenant Kaltenhorn for the hours we stood and waited while that llllllli took picturesj. 79 E?2X'Eifgzf an-QLi1grYiC'1-1lar N 'A ,., v ia? 2 Offfsi I Um-1' :1 wvck . . . lu dllIlSt'llSl' . . .
