Scioto Reflections We dipped into the past as far as the eye could see, Saw the visions that were yesteryears-the things that used to be. Saw our High School have its origin, i847 was the date, When first superintendent, Asa Lord, opened higher learning's golden gate. The enrollment increasing from year to year, moved the State Street building to a different sod, Many a chuckle and many a tear were experienced, at the high school on Sixth and Broad. We advanced to the period called Central High, the year 1892 And we see the first team to wear our colors-make a striking red and black debut In nineteen hundred and one, Glee Club, Debate Teams and Class Night were begun. Nine years later in l9lO-the building's name was changed again, The High School of Commerce pioneered the way, to make our Central, what she is today. l92O, first vice-principal Edith Bell was instated, two years later the ANNUAL was created. i924 saw new Central ready to bear the fruits that her pre- decessors had sown with such care. So onward we go! To the river Scioto! We see Central High School in all her splendor, ready to en- fold us in her grey arms so tender, At his desk is C. L. Dumaree, our principal, Whose kindness and fortitude remain invincible. We look upon the faculty, they number 62 in all We thank the Holy Divinity that they answered the teaching call. We see the auditorium where we sit assembly days We watch the Friday Frolics, operettas and drama plays, Our newspaper, the OUTLOOK, is good to see, Likewise our yearbook, the DOUBLOON. We hear Senior Choir, the radio broadcasts and watch the movie at noon. The clubs are next-though too numerous to write, Are stars of our past that will always shine bright. We visit the shops on the ground floor, Then we dash for the cafeteria as in days of yore. Pete the Pirate smiling down at us, makes lunchtime and happy- time synomymous. We see the football field, baseball diamond and the track And for a moment or two our memories go fondly back- To Homecoming, the band, the crowds, the cheers And our athletes whose courage and honor are undaunted by fears. We think of Central and our three years here, And the awakened memories bring forth a tear, because We, the class of '54, are proud to have docked on Central's shore, We, as the famed Pirates of old, have found our treasure a thousand-fold. And like our God who dwells in the sky, We know the spirit of Central will never die! By Barbara Hermann
