Handsome and hand-painted, they can be obtained in a great variety of shapes and sizes. Each puppet comes equipped with a note book, several wisecracks which have been left unprotected by copy- right, and a set of simple direc- tions. Their costumes are modern American, adopted from the Tyro- lean, the lumberjack, Minnie Mouse, or anyone at all. . .As the house grows quiet, they turn, and the play begins . . . ,, 4 1 W w' 1. The tenth grade acehmates itself to high school ideas AS newcomers to senior high school in September, we assum- ed the role of lowly sophs and tried to accustom ourselves to our new setting. We have gone slowly and would have made many blunders, except for the kindly supervisions of Miss De Leeuw, aided by our class president, Chris Eickhof. In our first act, a few stars have made their entrance. Luverne Morck represented the sophomore class on the A honor roll. In athletics, VVilliam Bakken served as a substitute for the first-string basketball team. Those who made headway in football were Peerman Eide, Gordon Saugstad and Floyd Spence. Floyd also placed First in the pole vault at the district meet in 1938 and is a member of the 1939 track team. By becoming cheerleaders, Doris Rude and Beverly VV ard found a place in the sun. Donna Mae Fagerstrom took first place in the Armistice Day essay contestg Miles Stenshoel and Douglas Bliven earned honorable mention in the soap carving contest. In the music department Marilyn Thorson qualified as accompanist for the operetta, An Old Spanish Custom. Douglas Bliven is acknowledged the best snare drummer in Central High. The class as a whole has also contributed its bit. The people with the most Christmas spirit is the title earned by one team from the sophomore assembly, which offered the largest contribution of foodstuffs during a Christmas campaign to help needy families. The second act, the third-they are still to come. We hope that our class will carry on as successfully as it has during the first act and earn a round of applause at the final curtain. During the First year we played rather unimportant parts, with the exception of those ,individuals who dis- tinguished themselves in music. athletics, dram- atics, art, and journalism. This part of our pro- duction was directed by Miss Skaar, assisted by Asley Hougen, class president. The second act, on which the curtain falls in june, gave many of our class members opportun- ities to express themselves. Both the boys and girls entered into all activities wholeheartedly. Some of our classmates became staff members of the lJi'f7.Yft'1: and the Ofvii111i.vt. In the two pat- riotic essay contests sponsored by the American Legion, the juniors boasted two winners, Donna Mae Sorenson and Monica Anderson. Other stu- dents were elected to the National Honor Society. Many of our boys starred in football, track, and basketball. The class achieved recognition by hav- ing Owen Albertson and Kevin U'Malley mem- bers of the first basketball team. The junior class E201 was well represented in music. Truman Stickney had a leading role in the high school operetta, An Old Spanish Custom, and other students participated in the choruses. The class also had members in both vocal and instrumental ensem- bles. In dramatics Asley Hougen placed second in the school oratorical contest. and Marvyl Tor- rance placed first in the school and sub-district contest. and second in the district contest. Booth Tarkingtoifs Clarence was a never-to-be-for gotten class play. The junior jitterbug Jamboree. which concluded the party schedule, was given in. February in honor of the basketball team. The social climax of our junior year was reached at the annual junior-Senior banquet and prom, which featured The Land of the Midnight Su-n, as its theme. The color scheme of blue and white was carried out by the scattering of pen- guins, ice bergs. igloos, and dog sledges. The guests danced to the music of Eddy Eastman's orchestra. Ken johnson acted as general chair- man, and .-Nsley lflougen presided as toastmaster. Act two was directed by Miss Skaar with the aid of our class president, Ken Johnson. , x Back row: phin uist. G. Nobody knows quite why she wears it. Iiven she doesn't. . . VVhy the brilliant Scotch kilt? Is there a carnival on, or something? . . . No, mj moronic friend, that's just a plaid skirt. But, I should think lu' would want ti keep it .... He does. but you don't know this girl .... VVell, why does she wea those tugboats? Through his ability and patient hard work he has not only found first string material but has developed a strong team for next year. Mr. Obermeyer is also assistant coach and faculty manager of the basketball squad. Under the able tutelage of MR. MR, SClllil'il,.-X coaches the backlield men on the football team. The calisthenics and drills which the boys take under his supervision are beneficial in preventing strain: and injuries. Sharp. i471 I EY Gridiron Gossip lo Earl Haugen and Don McKenzie VVith much new equipment, including foot- ball shoes, and after thirteen days of strenuous practice under Coaches Obermeyer and Scheela, the Pirates took Fosston in the first game of the year 28 to O. Bud Sampson copped all honors by scoring 22 of the 28 points made. Glen Morlan scored the other 6. Nearly everyone saw action, and the coaches were able to see what they really had in the line of first string material and sub- stitutes. A reminder to next year's team, Foss- ton doesn't care if they lose every game next year just so they win the Crookston game. After four days of practice and revision the Bucs were defeated by their age-old rivals, Thief River, 25-O. Kevin O'Malley, a Thief River player of last year, played his best game of the season against his former team mates. Glenn Houske was outstanding at an end position. Still another four days, and the Bucs were defeated 26-0 by Red Lake Falls. The Bucs had the upper hand in everything but the score. Player after player from Red Lake was knocked cold or car- ried off the Field through the hard blocking and tackling of Hanson, Bill Sampson, Bill Crane, and others, Tom -lessen played in this game and made up for not being able to play in anv of the others. The next week the Bucs held the A. C. to a scoreless tie. A spread formation was used in the last couple of minutes of play, and its execution was so well timed that it lacked one foot of a touchdown. Not only did the team lose the chance to victory, but also the chance of getting Bob Crawford, slippery halfback of the A. C. Bill Sampson played a stellar game. The Pirates traveled to Vllarren only to come back on the short end again. A large crowd of Crookston people were there to see Crookston's Morlan take the pigskin over for a touchdown a few minutes after the kickoff. NN'ith such an easy touchdown the Pirates were really in the mood E481 for a good game but were unable to hold NYar- ren's trick plays. Stan Tygeson, Bob Brekke Morlan. and Iirnie Rude carried Ct-ntral's colors l N ' Y 1 . lhe game ended 18 to 6 in XX arren s possession Upsetting all dope buckets the Pirates took Mahnomen, 7 to 0, in one of Crook- ston's best played games of the season. It started to rain on the opening kickoff and rained throughout the whole game. Gamme, playing guard, took care of one of Mahno- men's stellar players shortly after the game started. The Pirates dominated the field the whole game, and Mahnomen only threatened once-late in the game. Gamme, Riel, who made the only touchdown, Bud Sampson, Bill Sampson, Morlan, and Butch Hanson were most outstanding. All week long the Pirates worked out in thi rain to their delight, for it was an advantage. Bu' the homecoming game with lfast Grand Fork: was a dry day, and so were the Crookston play- ers. If ever a team deserved to lose, it was the Pirates. XVithout any subs who dared to play, thx lirst stringers had to play the whole game injure: or not. The game ended 45 to 0 for Iiast Grant Forks. With the graduation of a complete team of seniors, possibilites aren't very bright for next year. Leadership for that team will be lifted to Bud Sampson, Kevin O'Malley, Emil Hansen, and Bill Crane. The latter two played on the first team this year and were only freshmen. We won't miss seeing them play when they're seniors. To Coaches Ubermeyer and Scheela goe: much credit for making what they did out of sucl material. They started at the beginning of thi season with very little to work with. As the sea son progressed the Bucs were working into 1 better, surer machine. Regardless of the last gamn with lfast Side, had they had the ability and de termination at the start of the season that Wa' theirs at the end they would have surprised manj of their opponents. The National Honor Society recognizes first of all the great value of thorough scholarship. Success in life is built upon success in school. The code of the National Honor Society considers character of supreme impor- tance. Its National Honor students are loyal to the standards of the school, and it will be their aim to he loyal to their community and their nation. In school life, leaders are of the utmost importance. They do their share in the class room, hold of fices, participate in athletics and the other extra-curricular activi- ties. Above all, they do these things with a spirit of good sportsmanship. VVe do not all have the same talents and abilities to give. However, the National Honor Society recognizes that it is not what we give but what we share. Its mem- bers have been of service to Central High School because they have shared their talents and abilities. f74I For Style and Quality IN DRY GOODS AND LADIES' FURNISHINGS Go To THE NEW YORK STORE OSC-XR A.
