Because of its splendid transporta- tion facilities by buses, trucks, and railroads, it is the natural shipping point for agricultural products. Splendid roads and highways lead into Crookston from all locations in the trade area. 'llhe city has about twelve miles of paved streets. Sixty miles of paved highways lead into the city. JXgriculture is the main industry of this territory with a soil second to none, black loam on clay sub-soil. lt is very fertile and wonderfully productive, and grain and other crops are almost assured. Many of the principal industries are along agricultural lines. The Crookston Milling Company, the Flax Fiber Factory. and numerous other factories as well as a large variety of industrial plants contribute a great deal to the prosperity of the city. A few of these business firms are two large wholesale grocery houses. two creameries, two bottling works, a cement cul- vert factory, and two large machine shops. A corixoration-owned power plant furnishes power and light not only to the city but to most towns within a radius of one hundred miles. A daily and a weekly newspaper supply the news. Crookston is splendidly equipped with schools. and its educational facilities draw many students from even outside its trade area. It is the home of the North- west School of Agriculture, a branch school of the State University. The Crooks- ton Public lligh School, equipped with a very line gymnasium and auditorium. is housed in a splendid, commodious brick building. This high school, together with five grade schools, completes the public school system. ln addition, there are four parochial schools and one business college. Besides these many schools the Red X . biws River Valley XYinter Shows are locatecl here, with three large lruilclings housing each liehruary a gigantic agricultural exposition seconrl only to the Minnesota State Fair. 'llhere are excellent provisions for leisure time. Crooltston is splenclitlly equipped with musical talent. ancl musical activities are very extensive. In aclclition to the Municipal Hand, the schools of tltc city all have music groups antl classes in vocal and instrumental instruction. Crookston is equipped with three major parks as well as a numher of smaller parks. Central Park has a motl- ern swimming pool and hath house. a wacling pool. a splentlid tennis court, anrl a well-equipped tourist camp. llecause of a supervised play program during the summer. Ours is a strong' church city with many churches following sixteen clifferent faiths ancl synocls. Finally, Croolcston has two fully equippecl. moclern hospitals. the llethescla and the St. Vincent. Norman ancl Polk counties have joined forces in erecting' at Crookston a fine Sanatorium for tuherculin infectecl patients. George McIntyre, a youth of seventeen with a vocabulary several times too large for him, and his sister Terry, who, al- though tifteen, still clings to tomboy ways, prove to be two very trying problems to their parents. Terry has a rather difficult time when the boys refuse to let her play with them. Prudence, a sophisticated young snob, is extremely disgusting to poor Terry. VV hen George and Terry have a party for their friends. things seem to go from bad to worse as all of Terry's admirers devote their attentions to Prudence. The party comes to a dismal end when George is arrested for speed- ing, and the traffic olficer takes him to jail. However, the next morning things seem to clear up with George receiving his longed for dog, Terry no longer at- tempting to be grown up, and a new girl arriving next door. Skillfully directed by Miss Borghild Bue and realistically presented by an able cast, the play was enthusiastically received. Especially commendable was the colorful setting, designed under the supervision of Miss Barnum and Mr. jack- son. Because of the efficient work of Maurice McFarlin, business manager, and his assistants the play was a financial as well as an artistic success. Others who aided in the production were Mr. Thorson and the orchestra, and the following firms: I.ee's Dress and Gift Shop, the New York Store, and the Vklallace Drug Company. Page 39 Page Tiger House Tiger H ousc, the senior class play, is a mystery comedy in three acts by Rob- ert St. Clair. Erma Lowrie, a young shop girl, inherits an estate from her eccen- tric Aunt Sylvia and, according to the will. must live in the house for one year. Her demented aunt is supposed to have hidden a collar of jewels of tremendous value belonging to a heathen tribe in India. Yami, lfrma's house boy, is search- ing for that collar and. as a result, has much of the suspicion directed upon himself. Erma's cousins, Arthur Hale and Oswald lierins, her Aunt Sophia, and Peggy Van liss, a former girl friend, are all house guests when things begin to happen. A storm comes up suddenly, thunder roars, lightning flashes, the lights go out, and the Tiger snatches his victims through the fireplace and the bookcase. A Mystery VVoman falls in through the French windows. Aunt Sophia adds humor to the play because she is constantly losing her upper plate. Oswald un- expectedly discovers a secret entrance and thinks he is on the way to heaven although going in the wrong direction. Mrs. Murdock, the canny Scotch house- keeper, alone remains unruftled. lirma sends for her fiance. Maclntosh, who comes in the disguise of a detec- tive in order to he near her. lle, too. falls into the claws of' the Tiger. XN'ith Arthur's help lfrma discovers a letter from her aunt, hidden behind her aunt's picture above the tireplace, and so gains entrance to the secret room where she learns of the real hiding place of the collar of jewels. Yami hypnotizes Erma in a last desperate attempt to regain possession ot' the jewels. Thompson, the Tiger's accomplice, intercepts Yami's efforts, and then the Tiger appears. The jewels are removed from the crystal glove, and Mac reveals the identity of the Tiger by removing the T iger's mask. To everyone's horror the Tigers turns out to be ICrma's own cousin, Arthur, who was jewel-mad. Erma hands the collar to Yami and bids him return to his people, but Yami. who has learned of a new God from Erma, gives them hack to lfrma and Mac as a wed- ding present. E3 3 , 1 75 5 in lhlorsoinl Music Director Liked and admired hy all students, actively interested in community aH'airs, Mr. Thorson is a man of whom the entire school is proud. During the six years that he has taught in the Music Department of the Crookston l'uhlil' Schools, he has achieved an enviable record. Croolcston lligh School has been the district champion for the last live years, and the groups that have entered the state contest have achieved high ratings. Last year nine groups were entered in the district contest, and the judges' ratings were eight ,-X's and one H. which was the highest rating given in that division. 'llhis year eight groups took part, and they reeeived seven A-Ys and one li. The school and especially the music students owe Mr. Thorson a great deal for the splendid work he has accomplished, Page 43 Page 44 Music lln Review A few years ago Mr. Thorson introduced a system of awards for those students who have been active in musical groups throughout their high school career and deserve awards in recognition of their services. The awards are based on a plan of credits whereby a student receives a letter. a silver emblem, or a gold emblem according to the nmnber of organizations to which he belongs. This year's award winners have high ranking averages ahead of those of other years as far as points are concerned, with Aurora Capistran having a total of eighteen and one-half credits, the highest number ever earned. A special honor award is given each year to the honor student who has contributed the most to music during his four years in music. In 1934 the recipient was june Axeng in l035, Norman Peterson: and in 1936, Cleron Carpenter. This is the third year the music council has been organized in the senior high school. The officers of each major music organization, the choir, the orchestra. and the band, constitute the representatives to the music council. Such a group keeps student opinion before the faculty and helps solve the various problems that confront the music department throughout the yearg such as programs. discipline. uniforms, and changes in organizations. The council has met regularly every Tuesday morning from 8:30 A. M. until 8:45 A. M. ln addition to the large groups, band, orchestra. choir. glee club. drum and bugle corps. pep band. there are several ensembles. The ensembles represent the advanced student instrumentally and vocally. They are selected to partic'pate in public appearances as well as in contests. A clarinet quartette, organized in the fall, has broadcast from li FJ M and played at many public gatherings. The wood wind quintette, the brass sextette, and the string quartette have also appeared at several community attairs. The sophomore girls' sextette, including the trio, have sung together the last part of the year and have been in great demand for appear- ances. Other vocal groups are the mixed quartette. organized for the district contest, and the male quartette. formed late last fall. This quartette sang at many school functions as well as town programs. The mixed quartette received an A in both the district contest and the state contest, the other groups an A in the dis- trict contest, with the exception of the clarinet quartette, which received a li. Other groups which did not take part in the contest but which were organized and play- ing were a violin quartette, Barbara Miller, Jean Dunham, Lenore Bang, and Robert McCall: a string quartette, Lenore Bang, Iilvera Anderson. Marjorie Anderson, and Esther Skodjeg and a saxophone quartette, Luverne Thompson. Owen Albertson, VVillis Ifide, and Vedell Smith. Students in music not only participate in music groups but also have an opportunity to receive classroom instruction in the fundamentals of music. The course offered this year was rudiments of music, which included harmony. music appreciation, musical history, and conducting. Next year's schedule will include in addition the history and appreciation of music. In the history section will be a thorough study of music development, in the appreciation division a study of famous compositions. ear training, sight reading, and conducting. Furthermore. plans are being made to set aside rehearsal periods during the school day for the music organizations. Anyone interested in music can be assured of a well-planned and interesting program of activity next year. I XIVSII .XXY XRIIS II.lxIx Ix--xx. I-1111, 511111Iw1I1111I. The boys trotted out on the field decked out in new shoulder pads, headgears, pants, jerseys, and last but not least, blocking pads, which saved many a tender rib from abuse. VVith Tygeson as assistant to Osborn in the capacity of line coach, the team was put right to work. After little more than two days for conditioning. the team was hardened under the hardships of block- ing and tackling practice. Having lost the season's opener, the boys practically made up for it in the game with their city rivals, the Cathedral. Then under the able tutelage of Tyge- son, a new system was introduced and put into use in the Bemidji game. lispecially notable in that game was the excellent blocking exhibited by Hovland and VVheel- house. running for Matson and Panzer, who did most of the ball carrying. Al- though the Pirates dropped this game, they turned in their best performance of the season, The boys continued with their good ball playing for the duration of the season and ended with a fifty-fifty average. winning three and losing three. It might be well to note here that among those elected to posts on the all-city eleven, made up of the A. C. team. the Cathedral. and Central High, were the following Pirate players: Panzer, quarterback: Hovland, right half 5 Barnes, left end: and Xllheelhouse, right guard. The prospects for the 1937 football season are fairly bright. The Pirates will have nine returning lettermen around which to build a team. They will probably be led by their two union linemen. Riddell and Hegland. Among the lettermen returning is Mclienzie. who filled in the center position very nicely last year when needed. Sampson. who alternated at tackle and end, will most likely hold down the end post next year. He is rugged and a lighter. Hougen, the smallest man on the squad, played guard. Butch will be an important factor in the 1937 ball club. His running mate was Turnquist, another sophomore. He came along fast for his first year out and proved to be a stone wall on defense and an effective blocker on offense. Benson, the only freshman candidate to win a letter, is a big fellow. When he returns from the range next year, Cowboy Tom will be bigger. stronger and have a year's experience. Eickhof, who can play either tackle or guard and play them well. will be on hand next year. Riddell and Hegland will round out the rest of the line. Chuck, who is the biggest man, has had the most experience and plays either tackle or center. Little yardage was gained over him in his two years of competition. Hegland, playing tackle, turned in a good performance every game. The only returning letterman in the backlield is Yerian. He is a hard, fast runner and is a southpaw passer, which is a valuable weapon. Scarr, a shifty runner, failed to win a letter but will make a strong bid next season. Page 74 Prom-Sitlhe Mornin After On May first, nineteen thirty-six, we enjoyed one of the biggest events of our junior year, for that was the date on which we gave our annual junior- senior prom in honor of the graduating class of 1936. This prom was generally acclaimed as one of the nicest in the history of the school, and from all appear- ances every prom trotter had a marvelous time. Arden Anderson, our general manager, and Miss Letitia Scott, our class adviser, contributed a good deal to the success of the affair. The gymnasium was decorated to represent the lawn of an old Southern mansion. A false ceiling and wall and a white fence enclos- ing the entire dance Hoor along with an old-fashioned well, shrubbery, flowers. colored lights, and lawn furniture helped to create the atmosphere of the old South. The members of the decorating committee were Grace Melin, chairman. La Vann Darkow, Ardith Lee, Roy Olson, Donald Christianson, Thelma Nor- mann, Rose Hoglund, Aurora Capistran, lirnest Robinson, Curtis Hendrickson, Kathrine Raymond, Tryphena Rozeboom, and Charles Miller. Catherine Greenough, chairman of the program committee, Kathleen Kelley, Andrew Stephens, and Grace Trask arranged a very interesting and enjoyable program consisting of two selections by the male quartette and a solo by june Sampson. Marilyn Ostby also entertained us with a tap dance, and a group of junior high students danced the minuet. A delicious buffet lunch was served during the later part of the evening. An old-fashioned well made an attractive setting for the punch booth. liight sophomore girls assisted in serving. The refreshment committee was composed of Betty Lou Lycan. chairman. Luverne Thompson, Priscilla St. Martini and Lucille Broden. lidy lfastman's orchestra provided the music. Advertisements and Features if 2 E' Advertisements XYQ. the senior class of 1037, wish to thank the numerous business concerns of Crookston who have so willingly contributed to our year- book. NYe are extremely grateful to them, for without their spirit of cooperation and assistance this Optimist would perhaps never have been published. Through their generosity they have shown their interest in our school and in our undertakings. NVe in turn wish to show our appre- ciation by patronizing them and urging our friends and readers to do the same. ROY A. WHEELHOUSE J I H I ' ' ' we Sm, Us ,,,,.,,..,.
