Through Debate, interested Cen- tral students are first taught to think logically, to research the debate topics carefully, to organize their material, and to speak With poise. They then enter into competition with other schools in both local and national tournaments consisting of twenty to fifty teams. This year's Debate Team, com- posed oi thirty students coached by Mr. Ronald McGuire, entered in twenty-five tournaments, including the William Chrisman Tournament, the Creighton Prep Classic, the Worthington Invita- tional, and the Nebraska State Debate Tournament. The team finished the sea- son successfully with an eighty per cent Winning record.

Seventeen Central High students qualified as finalists in the National Merit scholarship competition this year. The students were chosen on the basis of their scores in the National Merit Test taken in March of 1966. Actual scholarship winners Will be chosen from the group of finalists without regard to financial need. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation was established in 1955 on grants from the Ford Foundation and the Carnegie Corporation. Math Central High's Math Team, coached by Miss Virginia Pratt, consists of the forty-four members of the Experi- mental Math class. This class attempts to broaden the mathematical horizon of these students by extending normal classroom subjects and by exploring subjects, such as the Numbers Theory, not usually taught in high school math courses. It also teaches the students to make quick, accurate decisions while Working under pressure, an important factor in test-taking. One of the most important events of the year for Math Team was the Na- tional High School Mathematics Con- test. Other activities of the Math Team included participation in the Creighton Mathematics Field Day and the Intra- City Math Contest, in which Central placed second. Team Now let's see.
