Doctor Senter Miss Stringer i! n Ave Atque Vale Retiring this year are two faculty members who have much in common. Both are Nebraska born and educated, are members of Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi. Both are scholars who have devoted many years to the teaching of science. Both take an extreme interest in their students, Their scientific training speaks for itself. Miss Caroline Stringer has worked for a number of years in Harvard Research Laboratories and at biological stations on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, Her special interest lies in Turbellaria. Doctor Herbert A. Senter received his doctorate from Heidelberg, Germany. His work in chemistry is along organic lines. He is also interested in rnineralogy. In praise of him Chancellor Avery has stated: Doctor Senter is a chemist of distinction, a great teacher, and a leader in the organization of chemical instruction. Doctor Senter came to Central High school to teach chemistry in l897, Miss Stringer camc as head of the Natural Science department in l904. lt is a fortunate high school that, for unbroken periods of forty and thirty-three years, can appropriate such superior preparation and teaching power. But sentimentally considered, within our walls the absence of these two personalities will be felt at every turn. How, for instance, shall Central High envisage the almost automatic bookroom lacking the stern-kind-playful presence of Doctor Senter? As Dean of the 'Faculty he has kept teachers, too, in their proper place. How shall we get along without those inter- esting glimpses into the natural world that Miss Stringer has so ably given us? How shall we thrive unsupported by her faith in honest words and work? ' To those two ingenious and constant teachers, what recompense for their unflagging service? An airy but precious something: self-satisfaction and the friendship of literally thousands of enlightened pupils, As to their future? tomorrow to fresh research and publications new!
