The Pioneer football team, led by captains Joe Fuller, Kevin Blackmer and Kirk Johnson triumphed over the Indians 35-7. During the record breaking game, the Pioneers ran for over 250 yards and scored 4 touchdowns. For the rookies on the team, the seasoned pros and the fans it was a sucessful and exciting game. Not so for the Southwest players, however. The most they saw of the Pioneer players was the back of their jerseys! I've got it! No. I've got it! 12 Centro! High Marching Band. A t ©ak th© game. Though the team in neither the Varsity nor Novice divisions scored well during the season, it members learned a lot which will be valuable in future years: research skills, topic analysis, information organization, documentation, refutation, and speaking skills. And really, that's what competitive debate is mostly about — to enhance scholastic ability. Stage Crew The Stage Crew, assisted by staff members Kay Sack and Colleen Kosloski, was instrumental in the production of the Homecoming and Sno-Daze talent shows. All seasoned veterans on spotlights and sound tech, they provided a real service to Central. 1st row: Keren Arvdreas. Roger Shimado 2nd row: Shown Erickson. Dovid Fernandez .Mark Zach. Football-There were no tryouts for the football danceline so Captains Racheal Lewis, Lisa Williams, and Rhonda Travis gathered a group of friends they could depend on and organized a danceline. With the help of their advisor. Shari Travis, they were able to learn at least 25 different new kicks, chin-ups, a sense of discipline, and to always smile. Basketball-This danceline did have a day in which girls could tryout, and eventually 25 girls were chosen. Their advisor, Evette McDonald, helped to keep things in order and headed the practices. This was a challenging year for the Pioneeretts . They worked hard and put in many hours of their time over the summer. They practiced everyday and had to put up with a kicking series of 200, getting their splits flat, their moves perfected, and bear all the aches and pains that went along with it. The danceline started out the season with Whip It. Other routines were Main Event , Shake Your Body , Why Do Fools Fall In Love , and Fame . Fame was the routine they'll always remember, because that was the purpose of their accomplishments, fame. 37 The Danceline would also sincerely like to thank Dr. Jackson for all her support and the confidence she had in them. The Concert Choir is a mixed choir, the Choristers an all girl group and the Varsity Chorus an all male group. The three choirs sing a varied repertoire ranging from traditional choral music to pop music. The Central Choirs have earned a reputation for high quality performance which has been substantiated by their earning many trophies at State Choral Contests over the years. Many choir members enter District and State Solo and Ensemble Contests, with a very high percentage of them earning superior ratings. Each spring the concert season is brought to a grand finale with a Caberet Show in which the choir students show their talents in song and dance in full array of colorful costumes and scenery. They have also served in the capacity of informant with the story concerning the change in the curfew law proposed in the state legislature. Production costs are met through advertising revenues, another part of the staff's responsibilities. The Pioneer was well received this year by all students. Central High School is proud to acknowledge Sheila Hayden, the Pioneer editor. Sheila was chosen to represent student views on the Minneapolis Star's Board of Conributing Editors. Many of them learned their basketball skills for the first time. With practice in speed and percision, all of the girls could make any varsity team. The Sophomore boys basketball team had a very successful season, despite a lack of size and experience. With good conditioning, added to speed and ball handling, they played exciting basketball and were one of the top two teams in the conference.
