CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL MINNEAPOLIS, MN. 1981 FALLing into step! FOOTBALL-CHAMPS For Carter - black. For Reagan - white Hawaii voted for Carter Alaska voted for Reagan As we all know 1980 was the year of an election. The candidates for 40th president of the United States were, as shown. Ronald Reagan. Jimmy Carter and John Anderson. Also running, but not shown here, were the likes of Clark the libertarian and Barry Commoner who was the only one running with a woman for vice-president. Around school there was much talk of the election. Here and there a small ''debate” would break out about who was best choice for the next President All over there were various buttons and stickers of one s favorite candidate. Most frequently there were buttons on backpacks but also some people wore bumperstickers plastered on windbreakers. Many students preferred Carter or an Independent to Reagan, although there were some who liked the former California Governor In the end it was Reagan who won carrying 46% of the votes leaving Carter with 85% ond the Independants with the remaining percentage of the votes Centrol wishes President Reagan good-luck 11 5 In October. Central's Puppet Company presented The Magic Pumpkin - the story of two boys who encounter witches in the pumpkin patch on Halloween night. Kate Paulos. who created the puppets and adapted and directed the show said. I looked forward to working with Central High students, appreciated their dedication and enjoyed their enthusiasm. The cast felt there was a lot of work involved, but they were very proud and satisfied with the success of the show. Ms. Paulos said she is looking forward to another production by the Puppetry and Mask class she is teaching second and third trimester. iHs ThtSTAns diary OF ANNE FRANK This was the school year's first play and also the first play Michael Kennedy directed at Central. The Varsity Football team proved to be 1 in the Minneapolis Conference. The first game was one of the most exciting games. It was won in overtime 21-14 over Edison. They ran away with the next game over West. The next game also had to be decided in overtime 6-0 over Henry. During the season they were lead by quarterback Joel Boisjolie. The team produced two All-City football players, Peter Najarian and Roscoe Horne, both on defense. South also did not roll over easily until late in the 3rd quarter when Peter Najarian scored from 3 yards out to break the scoreless tie. They outscored their opponents 161 to 20 in Conference play. Their season was really rolling along until they ran into Columbia Heights when they lost in a really close game 14-13. They finished the season with an 8-1 record. Two standouts were Robert Durham and Peter Hanson. Robert was voted Most Valuable and Peter Most Improved at the conclusion of the season. Robert set a school record in the 3 mile run and also qualified for the state cross country meet. Coach Jackson hopes that next year there will be more students who are willing to go out for cross country. Robert Durham 14 Standing: Jan© O'Brien, Theresa Klein, Lynn White and Coach Jackson. We have witnessed many changes — a new national leader, a new school district leader, many new additions to the curriculum. Our pursuit of excellence has occurred in both academic and athletic arenas. You are the last graduating class of the Central High School, grades 10-12. You have been a part of the transition to a 9-12 high school. As you leave Central, step out” into your future endeavors with confidence and optimism and become the Pioneers of the Future. Joyce T. This year they hope to take second in the city and take a few guys to state. Coach Max Rosenbloom hopes the team will beat a few previously unbeaten teams too. Practices were tough but the Central team didn't give up. Captains were Rob Wood, Don Bankey and Gregg Hanson. The managers were Wendy Peter and Sarah Pierce. As a pep talk. Coach Rosenbloom said often. Give it 100 percent. I don't care if you win or lose, just do your best- or your work out's going to start with a 500 fly! Top: Tim Peter. Peter Ferch. Jamie Mac Donald. There are still games to be played in the regular season as well as the regional and state tournaments. And in the state basketball tournament, anything can happen! Central's first foe in the regionals is Fridley. The state tournament will be played March 26-28 in St. Paul. The team was led by captain David Thompson and seniors T.C. Roller, Kevin McRoy, Rusty Scott. Donald Williams and Peter Najarian. Next year promises to be an exciting one. With a more experienced team. Central hopes to win many more games. Returning players include outside-shooter Ron Gross, guard Joe Fuller and forwards Greg Austin and Michael Rose. 92 Kneeling: Chris Hayden-$o. Jo Ann Fu!ler-Sr, Monica Love-So. They also began tournament competition successfully by beating Roosevelt in the first round and Regina in the second round. The state tournament will be played March 19-21 at the Met Center. Highlights of regular season play were the early victory over Washburn and the near win over Southwest in the last game of the season. Central lost by only 2 points! Another exciting game saw Brenda Hart nearly break the school record for points scored in one game. Brenda scored 30- the record was 31! There are 5 graduating seniors, so team members will be needed for next season. It promises to be a good one. 94 95 GIRLS' JUNIOR VARSITY Kneeling: MicheSe Sommers. Heidi Beske. Renisa Martin. A bright spot was John Gosse's 4 goals in one game against Henry. The team captain was Jeremy Hanson, assisted by Bob Paule and Greg Gustafson. The team was hard working and high-spirited. They had to face tough opponents in the Minneapolis Conference. Several members are graduating so the team will need more players next year. too SPRINGing into step TRACK BADMITON - 1980 Front: Cathy Hill. Nancy Blake. Lois Reseland. Mary Stevens. CONCERT - CHOIR A highlight for the Concert Choir this year was the Jester Hairston performance on January 22 during third hour, for the entire school. He told stories of his life and sang spiritual songs with the choir. He received a standing ovation for his excellent performance. His background experiences include professional acting (in Tarzan movies) and singing (in Lilly's of the Field he sang Amen for Sideny Poitier). The choir members also participated in the afternoon and evening concerts. “We had a whole day to prepare and we put alot of work into the rehearsals. It paid off and we really enjoyed ourselves, said Magnet senior and choir member Sylvia Jackson. Mr. Hairston told the choir that he also enjoyed the concerts. Contest was held during the third week of March, with every choir member involved in at least one performance of a solo, duet, trio, quartet or singing with the entire choir. The choir members have high hopes for many superior ratings and a bright outlook for the m 1981 - 82 choir. MARCHING BAND Front row: Dennis Molmberg (conductor). Kris Stensrud. Ricky Rondle. Although it got started late, the AFS Club is getting its work done, both in fundraising and as a social group. There have been weekly meetings and several parties. Central's AFS Club encourages students to learn about other cultures by: going to foreign countries themselves, having someone stay with them or meeting one of the foreign exchange students. They have been able to bring important personalities and groups to Central including Dr. John Najarian. Jester Hairston. Eric Brogan. Delman Hogan, John Mashek.
