In Honor Of Mr. Hamilton will always be remembered as the man who made Central High School's Band something to be proud of. In the three years that he was here he did more to instill pride in our school than ever before. Many would say that Mr. Hamilton is one of the nicest, sincer-est, and most understanding teachers around. We've lost a lot by his leaving, but we've gained a tradition to keep. The sounds of “CHS will ring through the class of 80's ears, as they remember one of the most special teachers Central has seen. Mrs. Frazier has been here at Central for ten years as an aide to the principal. Mrs. Frazier has been through some good and bad times. She is liked by all of the students, she is a very sweet and warm person. She is also a mother to all those in need of help. Mrs. Frazier has been blessed and we care for her a lot. We don't know how much longer she will be here, but when the time comes for her to go, we will miss her. Mrs. Frazier, we say thank you, and the class of “80 will never forget you! tq o Do you know: The new Central High building was started in 1910 and completed in 1914. It was built on the former camping grounds of the world famous Barnum and Bailey Circus. While the building was originally built to accommodate 1,800pupils, in 1925 there were over 3,000 students attending Central. T ieCentralian was previously known as the Senior but adopted its current name in 1916. Each year the senior class goes off to explore and seek their fortune. This year we are pioneers of a new decade, 1980, but while we are still here at Central we enjoy watching our Pioneer football team do their best. Homecoming typically draws the largest attendance. Students with balloons, colorful jackets, and food to munch on gather to cheer our team. Many students who graduated in previous years return on Homecoming day to see old friends and watch our team play. It doesn't matter if it's cold and windy or if we lose, Central pioneers will venture out to see the game and have a good time. That's what makes our school great. 5 HOMECOMING Queen Sue Of The House Of Bach King John Of The House Of Demmings 6 Left: Cecil a Thurson. Lori Arrandonda. Bob Swaive. Curtis Bell Middle: Sue Bach. The big day began with the crowning of King John Demmings and Queen Sue Bach. After the King and Queen took their thrones, the talent show began. The talent show was very exciting and smoothly done with its many different dances, songs and musical talents. During the show the Central Pioneers showed that the Pioneer spirit was alive and kicking. The spirit continued through an afternoon of activities provided by the students. The activities consisted of a T. V. room to catch up on the soaps, a coffee house for poetry reading, a student-faculty volleyball game, a dance contest, and a chance to hit one of your favorite teachers or friends in the face with a pie. Even after our homecoming game, which we need not mention, the Pioneer spirit was still going strong. And the Spirit was well alive into the homecoming dance with music provided by Lewis Connection. Here we go again. Central Football was a story of a group of young men who developed far beyond the expectations that had been predicted. Coach Robinson had forecast that, We would have difficulty winning two games . This team had only nine seniors; but they provided leadership, especially in the early games, when the younger players were trying to establish themselves. Four players made All-City Football team. They were Peter Najarian, Jr., Tim Robinson. Sr., Charles Rucher, Sr. and Mike Strong. Jr. Jeff Byrd. Sr., was named to the All-Metro team. Expectations are high for a successful season next year. 53 WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTR Y Back Row: Anne Gilbertson (captain). Marta Hanson. Lynne White. Mr. Hunt (coach) Front Row: Jane O'Brien. The high point of the year was Laurie Harris’ 26th-place finish in the State AA meet. Special awards went to Laurie Harris, Runner of the Year; Sherry Sanders, Rookie of the Year; and Anne Gilbertson, Captain for her second year. MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY Back Row: Captain Paul Durham. Robert Steveson The 79-80 men’s cross-country season was one of heartache and heartbreak. Last year the outlook was bright; the team was to have reached its peak with 4 seniors in their final season. The dream was broken by the loss of two key members and a series of crippling injuries. It was an enjoyable season just the same and our undergraduates are looking forward to a better next year. The team was improved over past years, and in the future, the team should be able to compete with the better teams in the conference. In addition to the 2 victories, we lost 4 matches by close scores. Melanie Berquist and Cindy Dopp, playing doubles, won a match in the Region 5AA individual tournament. That was the first region victory ever for Pioneer Girls tennis. Melissa Pederson and Melanie Berquist were the Co-Captains this year. It is hoped the seasoning of these players will enhance their skill level and, therefore, enhance the ability of Central’s team for next year. Although we didn’t have much success on the court, there was no other team that even came close to matching the team spirit that these girls exemplified. Record: The win-loss record was 0-11. A few difficulties with recruiting prevented the team from starling until 3 weeks into the season. A small team meant that many players had to dress up for Junior Varsity and Varsity A bump divisions. The team suffered a slight height disadvantage although they met one team that had even shorter players. so they weren't in that bad a position. Central played each school in Minneapolis at least once and often entered suburban games by invitation. They played in one tournament in West St. Paul. Every school is allowed to go to regionals; Central went but was eliminated aftr losing the first game. 58 A fake spike, or dink Get it over! Back Row: Coach-Wendy Dreis, Asst. Hitters are tall players that are able to spike the ball well. They play toward the sides of the court while the setters are in the middle. The setters are two aggressive. fast-moving players that move around after the ball is served and keep the team together. Serving is done overhand with the palm used to punch the ball. The valve in the ball creates an imbalance that is useful in making ,floaters or other special effects with the serve. The ball is hit three times ususally: bump, set. and spike. The rules require hits to be made with the fingertips or with the palms of both hands held together. A dink hit is meant to send the front line of the opposing team backward, ready for a spike, but the ball is only nudged barely over the net instead. A set 59 Row 1: Wendy Peter. Kim Parent. Kathy Bruce was voted most valuable; Linda Straub, most improved; and Amy DeVay, rookie of the year. Although we didn't win a lot of meets, we did have some good times. At the beginning of the season, our Central High Basketball team was rated 7th in Class A A ratings. But after two early-season losses we were dropped from the rating for the season. We know we were better than our record showed. By the end of the season we were tied for second place in the conference and on our way to the semi-finals of the Region 5AA playoff. The highlight of our season was to be invited to Williams Arena to play the number one rated team in the state. Jeff Byrd and Scott Washington made the All-City Team. Central graduated its first class in 1870 and eleven decades later we have seniors joyously approaching graduation or wistfully saying, “I wish I had. The class of 1980 must meet the challenge of the 21st century for you will be the leaders, the productive, the responsible over-age-35 group. On behalf of the Central High School staff, I welcome you to the 80’s and challenge you to become involved in those issues which will create a more positive environment in our chaotic world. You can and will make a difference — we are depending on you. Assistant Principals 135 Mr. Daniel Gomez Mr. James Rutherford Social Workers Counselors Top Row: Donna Yzaguirre, Shirley Way. We hope our friend's journey was calm and peaceful, and that they will watch out for us as we continue to push on through the 80's. These two pages are in rememberance of our Pioneers gone home. We don't know why, But we know it must be. For it happens all the time ... Souls set free. We try to understand, In between the tears. Hoping to wipe away, ... All our fears. So in the mist of it all, we live day to day. Remembering those souls, in our own special way. Monica Miller Monica Miller died on August 11, 1979. She was untiring in her service to the people of Central High School. Her concern for the students made them feel warm and good no matter what mood they were in. Her commitment was the result of her love for all people. She always had something good to say to everyone. Her sense of humor helped all around her through good and bad times. This wonderful person will be missed by all of us. 142 Of Our Friends: Leland Murray All who knew Leland were aware of how proud he was to be a Black man and how much he wanted and loved to learn. He was a strong; kind individual who did what he wanted to do, not a crowd follower, just himself. Leland’s death is a great loss to many, for he had the ability to give so much and the desire to do so. The light was shining, the light was bright, But suddenly it went out, ___dark like night. A child was born, he grew smart and strong. He had so much to give, ... ’til death came along. For this we are sad, but will continue to strive, And be glad God’s child was once alive. Benny Ternes I really loved my brother more than I could ever say, I wish I would have told him that before he passed away, There is no one like him and there will never be, I’ll always cherish the memories I had of him and me, I’ll always pray for Benny and the love will always remain, I think he knew that I loved him even though I never told him so, I wish I would have told him because now I’ll never know. LOVE ALWAYS, Sister Tammy 143 -Channon Willis Memories ★ Memories ★ Memories ★ Memories ★ Memories ★ Memories ★ 144
