ROW 2: Coach Lou Riley, Devetta McIntosh, Cynthia Poole, Jane O'Brien, Brenda Hart, Joanne Pastel, Tawana Beard, Coach Wendy Dreis. Women's Basketball This year, the Women's Basketball team finished with one of their best seasons since the introduction of the sport. Coach Lou Riley and first-year coach Wendy Dries ' 'improved us a lot, making us work together,'' stated Ernestine Henry, an All-American player. The junior varsity team had to be disbanded, though, because of the ruling that a player may only play a total of five quarters a night. Since most of the JV team also backed up the varsity squad, havin a JV put too much pressure on the varsity starters, as they had no backups. 28

The pioneer grapplers battled to a 10-5-1 dual match record tying with Henry for 4th in the city. Under new head coach Floyd Thomas and Assistant Brad Voves, the wrestlers struggled at the be -ginning of the season, and as time passed, they progressed quickly. The highlight victory of the season came on an extremely close match against North. The pioneers got their first all-out performance in tills 30-29 victoiy. Then, they battled to a tie against Henry. Coach Thomas stated '' nothing was settled score - wise, but it's done a lot for our team morale.1' With outstanding performances from the B-squad, and several returning lettermen, the team should be very tough next year. Coach Thomas quoted, ' 'With good dedication towards wrestling, and a whole team effort, we should improve upon our record.''
