Cross-Country Skiing Despite limited participation, Central's ski teams, led by captains Dana Rasmussen and Jon Furlow, managed to post 5-4 and 4-5 records, respectively. Coached by Richard Hunt, the team's outstanding performers were Anne Gilbertson, who scored 10th in the city, and Jon Furlow, who placed 5th in the city and made the all-confercnce team. Men's Cross-Country '78 . »» The Men's Cross-country team had a very good year. They finished ahead of three other teams in the region 5-AA meet. As only one member is graduating, and the star runner, Paul Durham, is returning, the 1979 team looks to be outstanding. Their record this year was the best they've had in four years. 24

Men's Basketball REGION 5AA CHAMPIONS Sir Dunk’1 A talented core of juniors served as the backbone of this year's basketball team, the Region 5AA champs. Pedro Perkins, one of the three starting juniors, led the team in scoring, while senior Melvin Armstrong led the team and conference in rebounding. Senior Davey Wilburn and juniors Jeff Byrd and Stacy Ward also started. Their 19-3 season began well, with Central easily overcoming all but two teams, Washburn and North. In the first Washburn game, the Pioneers, lacking Armstrong, lost; however, Central revenged this defeat in the second meeting. The other two losses came against North, the conference champions. Central finished third. In the regional meet, the Pioneer cagers breezed by their first two opponents, and then, once again, exerted their dominance over Washburn. At the finals, which pitted the Pioneers against Columbia Heights, the tense, exciting match went down to the final minutes when Central came back from a five-point deficit to a one-point victory, earning them the Region title and a berth in the state tournament. The season ended in the first round, when the Pioneers sue -cumbed to top-ranked Rocori. It was a proud year for Coach Levain Carter and the team. Perkins from the top of the key. 26
