Paul Najarian, Davdd Thompson, Mark Clark, Co Capt., Jon Waskosky, Robert Johnson, Brad Sutherland, Head Coach: Richard Robinson, Assistant Coaches: Chet Janaz, Joe Rosenfield. The 1978 Central football team ended the year 4-5 overall and 4-4 in the conference. The team was led by Freddie Bryan, Jon Waskosky, and Paul Najarian, who were selected to the all-city football team. Central made a strong showing in the preview defeating Roosevelt 6-0. In their first game in Fairbault, the team played well, but came up empty losing 6-0. In their first conference game against Edison, in 96 degree heat, the Pioneers spotted Edison 26 points and ended up losing 33-20. Next came Washburn, again the defense played well but the offense sputtered and lost 20-6. Against West the Pioneers pulled out a close win 6-3. On Homecoming, Central defeated Henry 8-7, led by Willie Holmes rushing 107 yards. Central next played Southwest for their homecoming and suffered a disappointing 6-0 upset. Against North the offense got on track and won 20-0. In the season's final game against Roosevelt, the Central defense played a fine game but again the offense was inept until the 4th quarter when Central engineered a 98 yard drive led by Paul Najarian, who gained 117 on 17 carries for the game.
