By Friday everyone was in the Homecoming mood. Before crowning Brenda Cox Queen and Jesse Temes King, a slide presentation on the history of Central was shown. The talent show which followed proved entertaining with both students and teachers taking part. After the auditorium, students participated in many activities which included a pie throwing booth, an opportunity to have your blood pressure read, and many other fun things. The football game, picnic, and dance, with the band called Phantasy, ended a very exciting day. 7 Sue Angrimson at Homecoming. Julie shows her 10 point smile. The royalty floats along. TTie Pioneers lived up to their slogan, ' 'Hamburger the Patties'', by defeating Henry 8-7. Although the game was low scoring, the Pioneers provided plenty of excitment with senior run-ningback Willie Holmes bursting 71 yards for the Pioneers' only touchdown. The Pioneer defense allowed only one touchdown in the game, and pulled out most of the stops on Henry with defensive players Dave Seymour, Brad Sutherland, and Eddie Ballard coming up with interceptions. Central maintained its winning tra -dition, making this game the fourth consecutive Homecoming Victory. Football 11 SPORTS A TIME FOR COMPETITION Central's new gym overlooking 35th Street. Central's New Look Scoring is easier at real home games. Awed by our new facility. Ms. Moyer, Minnesota's only female athletic director . On March 12, 1978, Central High officially dedicated the recently completed community gymnasium . This marked the beginning of the first real home games for Central's basketball teams, truly a step in the right direction. 13 ROW 1: Freddie Green, Robin Johnson, Cory Davis, Mike Strong, Barnett, Charles Webb, Orlando Cepeda, Milton Jones, Gordon Lyons, Stephon Johnson, Jesse Temes, Johnny Hunter. The 1978 Central football team ended the year 4-5 overall and 4-4 in the conference. The team was led by Freddie Bryan, Jon Waskosky, and Paul Najarian, who were selected to the all-city football team. Central made a strong showing in the preview defeating Roosevelt 6-0. In their first game in Fairbault, the team played well, but came up empty losing 6-0. In their first conference game against Edison, in 96 degree heat, the Pioneers spotted Edison 26 points and ended up losing 33-20. Next came Washburn, again the defense played well but the offense sputtered and lost 20-6. Against West the Pioneers pulled out a close win 6-3. On Homecoming, Central defeated Henry 8-7, led by Willie Holmes rushing 107 yards. Central next played Southwest for their homecoming and suffered a disappointing 6-0 upset. Against North the offense got on track and won 20-0. In the season's final game against Roosevelt, the Central defense played a fine game but again the offense was inept until the 4th quarter when Central engineered a 98 yard drive led by Paul Najarian, who gained 117 on 17 carries for the game. None the less, Central couldn't score and lost 14-0. All-city selections: Paul Najarian Freddie Bryan Jon Waskosky All-Metro, All-State: Paul Najarian Mpls, Conference MVP: Paul Najarian 14 15 1 XL. In the first year of competition with other city clubs, the soccer team finished in second place, losing the final game to West. This team greatly improved in participants this year and expanded rapidly. With the possibility of city-wide competition, officially, the future of Central-Park Ave. Soccer looks bright. 17 Cheerleaders FOOTBALL Do blondes really have more fun? ROW 1: J. Green, D. Aided by a strong turnout and a deep team spirit, the team, under coaches Ricky Bruce and Sharon Ireland, compiled a 5-4 record. The Women's Tennis Team had good leadership from Co-captains Mary McMaster and Lisa Franchette . Although the team won only two matches, good improve -ment was shown by all. Jeanette Booker, a senior in her first year out, was the top player on the team and played 1 singles the entire year. With five of the top eight players back next year, the team should have a world of improvement in its record. TOP: Oomph! ABOVE: Anticipation! Volleyball '78 Although the win-loss record of Central's volleyball team was not very impressive, it was a crucial year in terms of rebuilding a core group of prospective regional volleyball champions for the season to come. Men's Cross-Country '78 .   The Men's Cross-country team had a very good year. They finished ahead of three other teams in the region 5-AA meet. As only one member is graduating, and the star runner, Paul Durham, is returning, the 1979 team looks to be outstanding. Their record this year was the best they've had in four years. 24 Cross-Country Skiing Despite limited participation, Central's ski teams, led by captains Dana Rasmussen and Jon Furlow, managed to post 5-4 and 4-5 records, respectively. Coached by Richard Hunt, the team's outstanding performers were Anne Gilbertson, who scored 10th in the city, and Jon Furlow, who placed 5th in the city and made the all-confercnce team. The entire team worked together to take 5th in the relay meets. ROW 1: Anne Gilbertson, Michelle Franchett, Dana Rasmussen-capt., Jenny Blake, Kim Sturgeon. Men's Basketball REGION 5AA CHAMPIONS Sir Dunk’1 A talented core of juniors served as the backbone of this year's basketball team, the Region 5AA champs. Pedro Perkins, one of the three starting juniors, led the team in scoring, while senior Melvin Armstrong led the team and conference in rebounding. Senior Davey Wilburn and juniors Jeff Byrd and Stacy Ward also started. Their 19-3 season began well, with Central easily overcoming all but two teams, Washburn and North. In the first Washburn game, the Pioneers, lacking Armstrong, lost; however, Central revenged this defeat in the second meeting. The other two losses came against North, the conference champions. Central finished third. In the regional meet, the Pioneer cagers breezed by their first two opponents, and then, once again, exerted their dominance over Washburn. At the finals, which pitted the Pioneers against Columbia Heights, the tense, exciting match went down to the final minutes when Central came back from a five-point deficit to a one-point victory, earning them the Region title and a berth in the state tournament. The season ended in the first round, when the Pioneers sue -cumbed to top-ranked Rocori. It was a proud year for Coach Levain Carter and the team. ROW 2: Coach Lou Riley, Devetta McIntosh, Cynthia Poole, Jane O'Brien, Brenda Hart, Joanne Pastel, Tawana Beard, Coach Wendy Dreis. Women's Basketball This year, the Women's Basketball team finished with one of their best seasons since the introduction of the sport. Coach Lou Riley and first-year coach Wendy Dries ' 'improved us a lot, making us work together,'' stated Ernestine Henry, an All-American player. The junior varsity team had to be disbanded, though, because of the ruling that a player may only play a total of five quarters a night. Since most of the JV team also backed up the varsity squad, havin a JV put too much pressure on the varsity starters, as they had no backups. 28 29 The pioneer grapplers battled to a 10-5-1 dual match record tying with Henry for 4th in the city. Under new head coach Floyd Thomas and Assistant Brad Voves, the wrestlers struggled at the be -ginning of the season, and as time passed, they progressed quickly. The highlight victory of the season came on an extremely close match against North. The pioneers got their first all-out performance in tills 30-29 victoiy. Then, they battled to a tie against Henry. Coach Thomas stated '' nothing was settled score - wise, but it's done a lot for our team morale.1' With outstanding performances from the B-squad, and several returning lettermen, the team should be very tough next year. Coach Thomas quoted, ' 'With good dedication towards wrestling, and a whole team effort, we should improve upon our record.'' Wrestling A Team ROW 1: Brad Higgins, Jesse Temes, Brian Stoneburg, Theodore Johnson, Mitch Heyda, Jerry Jakobs, Paul Jakobs. ROW 3: Coach Gary Hughes, Greg Gustafson, Randy Baumgartner, Tim Felien, Joe Beier, Dean Gillespie, Jeremy Hanson, Steve Feldman, Stephen Johnson, Greg Beckman-manager. This year's Hockey team finished with a 6-15 record, but they had a number of close games. New coach, Gary Hughes, instilled in the players the confidence they needed to win. Mark Felien led the team with 13 goals and 18 assists. t I 3 Gymnastics UNDEFEATED CITY CHAMPS The gymnastics team, one of the most successful teams at Central this year, went undefeated in the Minneapolis Conference, and took the championship. This made them the first girls team at Central ever to take a title, and the first undefeated gymnastics team in the city. In the Twin Cities tournament, which pitted the best of the two cities in a dual meet, the girls battled down to the last event before succumbing to St. Paul by one point. On Saturday, March 3, the team won the city meet which was held in our own new gym. Chris Moses, Loma De -Vay, and Kim Shifflet won individual metals in this meet. Chris also went to the State meet and placed third in the balance beam. — - ROW 1: Lisa Williams, Linda Green, Rachel Madden, Debbie Robbins. ROW 2: Ass't. The men's swim team, though possessing many good swimmers, lacked the depth needed in competition. The team, coached by Max Rosenbloom and Jim Neilson, practiced at Franklin and Wilson Jr. Highs and the Blaisdale YMCA. Though the team lacked depth, it showed great spirit. For their one close match against West High, the team gathered a petition against their opponent and posted it on the pool wall prior to the meet in hopes of psyching them out. Only two members are graduating, and if they can urge more newcomers, the team has a chance for success next year. 34 Coach Beske, J. Harkness, C. Knutson, D. Segal, J. Nelson-capt., R. Rivers, B. Breen-capt., S. Baker, K. Lindquist, M. Fernandez, M. Howard, J. Martineau, C. Seymour, M. Brecount, C. Fry-mire, R. Gray. MEN'S TENNIS The 1978-79 Central Men's tennis team was a very young one. They started 5 juniors, and 2 sophomores. Although their record was 1-13 they had many close matches. They beat South 3-2 for their victory. This year's team should be strong with all of the starters returning, led by Chris Nelson, Chris Knutson, and Bennett Breen. 35 Central Men's Track ROW 1: T. Holman, P. Najarian, K. Whitlock, D. Central's 1978 track team had an outstanding season, winning almost every meet they participated in. They won the City Championship, the Regional Meet and took second in State. Brad Sutherland set a new school record in the pole vault by tying the regional record. At the State Meet, Jeff Byrd placed first in the 100 yd. dash and second in the 220 yd. dash. Davey Lewis finished third in the 220, and Robert Stevenson took third in the high jump. The 440 relay team placed first and set a new Minnesota record while plac -ing thirteenth in the nation. The team was fairly young, losing only two seniors. Despite that, there were several outstanding school record breakers: Anne Gilbertson and Devetta Macintosh and the 440 relay team which went to state. Whether they were record makers or not, all of the girls worked hard and had the experience of competition and teamwork. Above: Up, up and away! Right: I'm gonna get you! 38 Badminton '78 ROW 1: C. The 1978 badminton team, a fairly young squad, enjoyed a fun and active season. They also had a fairly successful year, ending up in the middle of the conference standings at the end of the season. The team boasted several very good players, and the most outstanding of these was Brenda Lee, who placed 4th in singles at the city meet. Baseball-1978 43 Table Tennis Ken Harkness, Mason Pacini, Paul Keller, Swen Baker-capt., Shodie Baker. Ken Harkness On Saturdays from December to March, a group of Central students bussed to Disney's to represent Central in the high school table tennis tournaments sponsored by Disney's. The students, led by captain Swen Baker, competed for a ranking in the final championship tournament. They also participated in round robins and other small tourneys. It's a fast, exciting sport, and it's fun to play and improve.'' explained Ken Harkness. Swen Baker Mason Pacini Paul Keller 44 Sophomore Basketball This year, the sophomore basketball team chalked up an impressive season under their new coach, Steven Robinson, a newcomer to the coaching field. The many talented individuals like David Thompson, who also dressed for the varsity squad, combined their skills to create a team that was 11-1-1 at one stage of the year. For their main activity during the year, the Creative Writing club, sponsored by Ms. Martha Harris, held a creative writing contest in January. Each member judged some of the entries, which included poems, short stories, and essays, chose which one's they felt qualified for the final judging, and then the group discussed these choices. Earlier in the year, the group met to practice writing creative stories, and they also wrote stories to give the film club ideas for something to film. The club planned to sell an anthology of their stories to interested community members. For the club members, though, the club provided an opportunity to make new friends as well as writing. This year's film club members worked independently on projects such as slide shows, filmstrips and still photographs. While nearly fifty' people signed up, only a handful attended meetings, so advisor Colleen 1 Kosloski left it up to the students to work independently. The club was designed to give interested students the opportunity to learn and use audiovisual and photographic equipment and gain experience producing in those areas. The Debate team, directed by Ms. Shirley Hallberg, debated in the city competition at Southwest High in early February. The topic for this year's debates dealt with energy and American energy consumption. The team purchased representative shirts for the competition. For practice, they held a mock debate as an activity on Homecoming day. The outcome of the debates led to this resolve for our team: That the federal government should establish a comprehensive program to significantly increase the energy independence of the United States. STATE CHAMPIONS: High The ski club was designed to provide students who enjoy the sport an opportunity to get to the slopes. The club, sponsored by Ms. Harvey, scheduled several trips to Afton Alps; however, many cancelled trips resulted from bad weather conditions and insufficient numbers of students to pay for the bus. Everyone agreed that the successful trips were fun, ♦hough. I Due to the success of last year's team (3rd place in state), this year's High School Bowl team had a reputation to uphold. They asserted this by defeating White Bear Lake substantially in the first round of competition. With veterans Todd Eddy and Jim Harkness returning, the season looked bright. Teacher apathy and lack of student-faculty communication resulted in a disappointing Sno-Daze '79. In the past, Sno-Daze has been an entire day of activities, but this year the students had an entire day of classes until finally, during 6th hour, the coronation and talent show auditorium occurred. This was the bright spot of the day. The Royalty included Lord Timmy Wilburn and Lady Gaynell Moore, Duke Joel Boisjolie and Duchess Marta Hanson, Prince Peter Najarian and Princess Sue Bach, and King Mark Frazier and Queen Renata Hin-richs. Many interesting talents performed for this year's royalty. King Kola and the Karbonated Kids made their debut, Marcus Darnell sang, Queen Renata danced and many others presented their talents. The sole afterschool activity was a coffee house featuring songs and poetry. The day wound up with a disco dance in the evening. Above: The snow comes down upon delighted royalty.
