It snowed ! It rained ! But though the weather was ornery, school spirit wasn't. Homecoming started off with the coronation, which was colorful and moving. After the introduction of the brilliantly dressed Ladies and Gentlement of the Court and of the Princesses and Princes, Queen Cindy Woodbridge and King Hugh Shapiro were crowned. And the festivities began. The festivities were highlighted by the talent show; afternoon activities like casino mathematics , pie throwing, rollerskating, candle -making, etc; a picnic in the lunchroom; and an evening disco dance. The football game against West had to be postponed because of rain, and when it was played on the following Monday, it was played in a snowstorm. Albright, Raymond. An- Cross Eight dedicated members, coached by Tim Kennedy, made this year's Women's Cross Country Team the best in Central's History. Though Cross Country is a relatively new sport at Central, the members have shown Central's potential as a strong team. Two first year runners on the team broke last year's school record for the two-mile run. Central defeated South twice, West and St. Paul Harding in conference meets. At the city meet. Central placed above West and North. At the Region 5 AA meet, Central defeated North, Roosevelt, South and West. Central also took 3rd at the city J.V. meet. 64 Standing: Left to right. The team finished the season with 8 wins, 9 loses, and 1 tie. Central did not qualify anyone to go to the state, this year, but Joe Hughes placed 3rd in the Region 5AA Tournament. Dave Scott also finished with an impressive 25-4 record. Coach Schwartz was especially pleased with this year's team success, because, it was a building year, and most of the team will be returning next year. Central will have quite a few returning wrestlers with experience next year, for the first time, and add to that young wrestlers coming up. He is a graduate of Tufts Univer- j sity, Boston, where he majored in music. His first broadway show was ' 'Hello, Paris'', starring the late Chic Sale. j Hairston sang in the chorus. This was in 1930, Jester received his early training in the field of Afro-American Folk | Music under the great choral conductor Hall Johnson. By 1933 he had become the assistant conductor of that great | Black choir. In 1964 Hairston received the Honorary Dr. of Music degree at the University of the Pacific, Stockton. In 1972, j he received the degree of Dr. of Fine arts at the University of Mass., Amherst Campus. And in the same year, he f received the Dr. of Music degree at Tufts University, Boston. He is best known as a choral arranger and conductor. • However, the State Dept, has sent Jester as an Ambassador of good will to Europe three times, to Africa and to Mexico. He taught singers to sing Afro-American folk songs. He is in constant demand by churches and by High School and College choirs all over the country, as a clinician and lecturer. rv'i Long bus rides, coaches, chlorine, knox blocks, and ' 'five seconds ... ready, go! are a few things that will live on in the minds of the 1977-78 Central swim team. The team was fortunate in having better practices than in previous years, and, in effect, was able to make a good showing in this year of building. The small size of the team allowed it to be closer knit, and the better swim teams bowed to them when it came to cheering. Coaches Scott Jenkins and Steve Couture were assisted by managers Kathy Bruce and Linda Straub to keep the team alive and in motion. Next year's team is looking forward to another challenging season. This year's debate topic was difficult: whether or not to guarantee medical care to all U.S. citizens, and if so, how? As the season developed, the need for guaranteed medical care 1 'seemed'' clear, but no good method could be found. Those arguing against guaranteed medical care (the negatives) tended to have the advantage. It became clear to members of the debate team that statements of need for change are easy to make but setting up a workable system is difficult. Central's debate team is a member of the Metro Debate League, comprised of 12 city and suburban schools. Central's novice team came in 4th, junior varsity in 5th, and varsity in 6th. The novice team of Melissa Pederson, Liz Price, and Sue Rowley had a super season, winning almost all of its debate contests. Yearbook Staff Sitting: C. Powers, C. Rice, R. Crawford, K. We, the yearbook staff, proudly present to the students of Central High School this yearbook. We conscientiously sought to make it the best yearbook Central has ever had, and we feel we have in large part succeeded. The color, the larger size, the wide-use of candid coverage of students and activities, and greater number of portrait pictures we hope impress you. Certainly we spent many hours as a group planning, taking pictures, making layouts, typing copy, etc. in the production close to 200 hours. We hope you share our pride in it and will be able to use it as a source of memories for many years to come. 120 Sitting: Cindy Poole, Editorial Editor Willie Holmes, Marcia Burks, Richard Gray, Feature Editor DeanNewlund, Advisor Ms. Harris. Pioneer Newstaff The 1977-78 school year was a prosperous one for the Newstaff. From the first day of school we, as a staff set out to improve the Central High Pioneer. We worked together to produce a piece of quality literature. Pride and integrity carried us through the toughest and most challenging times, as well as the most joyous and pleasurable moments. As a staff we had our ups and downs, good and bad, happy and sad experiences, to benefit us all as we pushed for quality and completeness. We as a staff could never be content with a few steps toward our goals and objectives. There was always more striving and improving to do. The final product was not always as satisfying as we may have wished, but in the end we left with wholesome feelings, knowing that we learned and grew together. Student This year has been a milestone for Central High's Student Government. It marks the first real attempt by the body to be an active force in school decisions. Led by David Scott, Gregory Owens, Andrea Thurston, and Annette Granger of the Senior Cabinet and by the members of the Junior and Sophomore Cabinets, the organization made history by writing the first constitution Central's had in many years. The constitution is a working base for all future student governments. Through its 8 committees (Auditorium, Constitution, Curriculum, Fund Raising, Principal's Advisory, Guidance Advisory, Student Activities, and PTSA), students now have an outlet in all areas of concern. The authorities invested in these committees make student government the most powerful youth organization in the school. The purpose of Student Government can best be stated in the words of its constitution: It is to act as an intermediary between the students and the administration.'' Through workshops, advisory discussions, and special committee meetings, the group has made an honest effort to understand the real concms and problems of the student, and to make recommendations for school improvements. With the base provided this year, the future of student governments at Central looks promising. Government 124 Dave Seymour, Marie Sell, Ella Gates Class Cabinets The class cabinet officers provide leadership for their respective classes, at student government meetings and otherwise. The Senior Class Cabinet leads student government meetings, with the senior class president (David Scott) recognized as the top student officer in the school. Outside of student government, the class cabinet officers plan social and school class functions, and initiate fund raising to put the class activities on. West Area Student Advisory Committee The West Area Student Advisory Committee meets regularly with other advisory committees of high schools in the West Area. The joint committee provides student advice to Dr. Green, the West Area Associate Superintendent, and Dr. Arveson, the School Superintendent. Advice given is on such matters as school budgets, curriculum, and fund distribution. Two major goals were set by the committee: to get human relations classes in all schools and to get more balance in funding of extra-curricular activities. Led by drum major Greg Owens, the band performed dance routines to Gene, Gene, the Dancing Machine, Rocky, and other pop selections. The Concert Band consists of the better performing musicians from the marching band. This group of musicians spend many hours each year practicing a contest piece for competition with other high school bands. This year's selection is the 1812 Overture. Central High Stage Band: This year marks the first year for a performing stage band at Central High. Members spend time performing various jazz and rock literature and meet three times a week during their lunch hour. Several concerts are scheduled at West High, Bryant Junior, and a trip to Chicago in the spring. Lightbulbs glare like suns in miniature around the mirror Illuminating his face to a rosy complexion But they flicker their rays (as if to give warning) The bright torches of his face dim their lights And close slowly revealing red eyelids no one ever saw. Lightbulbs cut off their beams abruptly Glazing the dressing room no more. The colors of the orange carpet are still Because they darken with the room. Only the mirror remains distinct, a glassy fresh Puddle on the wall that Puts forth an image of the youthful man. The applause continues its rhythm though It is now directed toward A bright image on the wall of a dark room.
