With only two seniors on the squad, this young team was struggling to gain the experience needed to win in this sport. The team and it's coaches, Ed Schwartz and Larry Lam parske, are optimistic about the future. And who will ever forget the cold of winter '76 - '77. All through January, temps below Zero. Nearly 2 weeks straight of temps below 20 below. Three days In a row of record lows, to 32 below. Fuel shortages everywhere, causing the search for new energy sources. And then ice storms just before Snodaze. Hot Lips How 'bout it big boy? SMACK!!! SNODAZE ! Snodaze 77 was a lot different this year than In previous years. It was much more formal, and alot of people feel, a great deal improved. Last year's King (Joe Miller) Queen (Francine Freeman) returned to crown this year's King Russell Gary Queen Pam Goodwin. Prince Hugh Shapiro Princess Maxie Jones were crowned by last year's Prince (Joey Wilburn) Princess (Kim Upsher). Duke Duane Carlson Duchess Renatta Hindrichs were crowned by this year's Homecoming Queen Gigi Pobuda King Mike Huntington. Following the coronation was the talent show, and a day full of activities for which students could choose from. The regional basketball game with Central beating South 108-77 wrapped up Snodaze 77 , making it a very good day. YEARBOOK STAFF Oh, It Is good to be done with the Yearbook! So much work to be done: pictures by the thousand's taken, seniors to contact, names to be gotten, stories to write, plans to make, pages to be designed and proofed, deadlines to be met, sweat to be sweated, nerves to be quieted. But if we've produced a good Yearbook, it was worth It. We feel we have and hope you agree with us. Here, then, we present to you a story and picture history of Central High School, 1976-1977. STUDENT GOVERNMENT Student Government is a school organization formed entirely by the student body. Its function is to please the needs and wants of the students, decrease the percentage of apathy among the students, and develop a perfect relationship between the students and the council. Sensitivity and Accountability are the prime words of Central's Student Government Council. Student Government relates the needs to the students, and students to the possible results of the needs. Student Government puts into effect the concerns of students and resolves a solution. Student Government also reviews activities that concern the student body's participation. % SENIOR CABINET L TO R, Sec. V. Hall, Pres. P. Goodwin, Tres. R. Gross, V. Pres. G. That was this years debate topic — a tuffy. Debaters had to be able to debate both sides of the issue, and had to be small experts on prisons, sentencing procedures, parole, probation, recidivism rates, rehabilitation, juvonile law, and pre-trial detention. And in addition to knowing what they were arguing for or against, they had to be persuasive speakers to convince judges they had more Answers than opponents. Though the debate team this year did not have the success of teams In other years. It was a scrappy crew that maintained poise and spirit and represented Central well in the state and city. Central has an active technical theatre group which handles all facets of production, from sets to costume construction. The students are trained in stagecraft classes and after school. The ultimate demonstration of their learning occurs during the student productions, where they are responsible for all technical production. 102 Lee Einsweiler makes-up for the Moon is Blue. Kristin Rinker helps Roberta Anderson with make-up. The Moon Is Blue Central's winter theatre season, traditionally, is devoted to productions staffed by students. THE MOON IS BLUE, a touching comedy of human relationships, was selected for production. The show was produced under the directorship of Vern Plant and his assistant, Kristin Rinker. The cast consisted of Roberta Anderson, Leo Einsweiler, Ray Albright, and Mitch Whyte. Generally, high schools do not give students an opportunity to produce their own shows; Central is a fine exception. Its purpose then, as it is now, is to honor and recognize Afro-Americans who have contributed to the building of America. This year's auditorium program at Central High School was a panoromic view of Afro-American history in five historic eras: roots, repression (slavery), rebirth (Harlem Renaissance), revolution (turbulent sixties), and reflections (where Blacks are now). The program helps organize community experiences which coordinate with class studies, so that students in electronics can go several times to T-V repair shops to observe and dialogue with repairmen; or students in bookkeeping can spend 4 mornings at Pillsbury Co. to acquaint themselves with accounting procedures in business; or students in social studies can perform important community services, such as aiding elderly people, tutoring elementary kids, or working with animals at the . Animal Humane Society. Too many examples to list. These pictures, we hope, serve to show the spirit and possibilities of action learning. Much gratitude goes to the Danforth Foundation of St. Louis, Missouri, which is providing most of the funds for the program. 112 Erin Flaherty is an AFS Exchange Student from Melbourne, Australia. None of the credits she earns at Central will be useful in Australia; therefore, when she goes back she will have to repeat the 12th grade! Erin has many friends at Central and will be remembered by many when she leaves. To the Students of Central High School: This year has been the most exciting one of my life, and I would like to thank everyone at Central for making it such. Though it took a while getting used to the American Ways , I never really felt left out at Central—everyone is so willing to be friendly and accept others as they are. Central has been an entirely new experience for me. There is a great difference between the American school ;ystem and the Australian system, yet basic reading, writing and arithmetic are the same. Another first was the iddition of males. My old school was girls only, so attending a school where half the population was male was luite a difference. The size and variety of Central was something else to experience, and I can truly say I will be going back to Australia a much broader person, (In more ways than one, American food is so very fattening.) CENTRAL has added so much to my memories of my stay in the United States . I shall always remember he Pom Pom girls, (Pom Pom girls, cheerleaders and football players were all new to me). Pep fests, food fights n the lunchroom, the gong show, twinkies, sponge, and certain people who always wanted to spit! I also found that though we both speak English, American and Australian are often two different languages. M first I found it difficult to understand the accents and the slang, and there were also some embarrassing misunderstandings when certain words meant one thing to me and something completely different to Americans, but I have now learnt what to say and what not to say, though it took some time. My main reason for writing this letter is really to say Thank You all so very much for having me, especially o those who went out of their way to make my stay as fantastic as it has been, and if anyone has an urge to come ind see the kangaroos and koalas and other strange animals which Australia is so plentiful in, I hope you will :ome and see me too, as I would love to see some Yankees again. The best of luck to you all. 113 With love, Erin Flaherty FACULTY 114 SOCIAL WORKERS MEDIA CENTER I. Hanson, H. Swanson, R. Tongson, H.
