The school was decorated in Red and Blue, posters for the footbali qame screamed Strip the Teddies Bare , and Teddy Bears were hanging from the lights. With preparations in the auditorium complete, the Coronation Ceremonies started. First, the Ladles of the Court and their Escorts were presented to the school. Following them were the Princes and Princesses, one of each, the Heirs Ap-pearant to tho Throne of Central High School. Given the Honor of the Coronation of the two Monarchs were His Royal Highness, The Prince Jon Najarian, and Her Royal Highness, The Princess Debbie Nolan, both from last year's Royalty. The Coronation of tho Queen came first as H.R.H. Jon Najarian placed the crown upon the head of Her Majesty, Queen Alberta Gary I. Following this, H.R.H. Debbie Nolan crowned His Majesty, King Haywood Smith I, as King of Central High School. A Tug of War and a picnic in the lunchroom followed. After this It was off to Parade Stadium, where the Pioneers were playing host to the Roosevelt Teddies, the only undefeated football team in the city. The first quarter ended in a scorless tie. As the second quarter started, the Teddies, with lightning speed, scored a touchdown. The extra point attempt failed. The Pioneers took the bail and marched down the field. With 23 seconds left In the first half, the Pioneers had the ball on the Roosevelt 46 yard line, 2nd and 10. Quarterback Paul Mitchell took the ball and rolling out to the left hit Herb Wilburn for a 46-yard touchdown pass. This tied the score at 6-6. Central's kicking unit came onto the field, and Robert Johnson sent the ball sailing through the uprights to give the Pioneers a 7-6 lead. The game ended with the same score; the Central Pioneers were the Number One football team in the Minneapolis Conference. 1975-76 HOMECOMING KING AND QUEEN ALBERTA GARY HAYWOOD SMITH GIRLS VOLLEYBALL TEAM ROW 1 Pam Goodwin coach Thomas, coach Moyer, Francy Freeman ROW 2 Regina Gross, Charlene Pemberton, Aniae Mazono, Maxie Jones ROW 3 Carol Smith, Kim Jacobs, Marcie Burks, Pam Smith. The girls volleyball team starting small In numbers, grew to a sizeable team. We had only two returning players from last year's team, so we had to do a lot of building. The girls learned to bump, set and spike, and toward the end of the season started playing aggressive ball. If next fall we can start where we left off this year, we are going to have a good team. We are going to need more of the Central girl's athletes out for volleyball if we plan to put in a bid for state. We have as much talent as other schools, but they seem to have the dedication it takes to be champions. D. Hakenesch, B. Dopp, R. Matthews, D. Johnson, D.Gunther, T. Huntington, Coach T. Aim. All of them put forth a tremendous effort. Two of the meets—against North and South—were lost by just one point. With the team gaining experience, and several members returning next year, we should have an excellent team, ready to take on any challengers. i'Sfllf women’s swimming FIRST ROW: Manager—N. Ireland (COACH). The 1975 Central Women's Swim Team had the best season In its history, this year. It is a young team, and out of twenty girls, only Shana Berkowitz and Co-Captains Donna Hughes and Mary Howard graduate this Spring. The women defeated Henry in a close meet, and defeated South by a wide margin. They also came close to defeating Edison and Washburn. 49 r WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY This year's Women's Cross Country team was considerably smaller than the previous yoar's. Only two young, dedicated, hard working, women participated In the sport this year. Because of the sire. Central did not score any points at meets; however, in practices and meets, the women logged over 200 miles. With both members graduating, the team will need a lot of young blood for future seasons. 52 Ackerblade, R Ackerson, C Albright, R Booker, C Boone, J Brekke, L Anderson, M Anderson, R Anderson, S Breland, P Brinker, T Brisley, P Andreassen, K Austad, L Barron, R Bartel, K Brodeen, D Brown, E Bryan, R Buystedt, L Baumgartner, J Bloomquist, C Beaudin, K Boberg, K Blood, B Bolin, 0 Carlson, D Christianson, N Correll, M Clarke, T Colbert, P Conner, M Cosgrove, K Cottle, E Coir ant, T Crawford, L Cunningham, J Davis, C DeAndre, A Delmont, K Dillard, C Ditlevson, J Dopp, B Doty, L Drellack, M Duncan, M Dye, J Einsweiler, L Elliott, L Fortman. This has truly boon the “Year of the Pioneers for tho Central High School basketball team. At the time this book went to press. Central's basketball team was 21-0, City Champions, Twin-City Champions, and rated the No. 1 team in the State. This has been a record-setting year for Central as well: • 16-0 City Conference record. • First undefeated basketball team in schools' history. • First team in state to have all fifteen players score during single game. • First team in city to have four of its starting five make All-City basketball team, which consisted of only ten players. • This years' team's scoring average of 86 points per game is highest in school's history. This year's sophomore basketball teams philosophy of fast-breaking and constant running did not start off too good, but after the victory over the undefeated Washburn Millers, things started to pick up. The team ended with a 19-4 record for the season, under the coaching of Mr. Louis Boone. DEBATE M. Cox, L. Einsweiler, C. Forester, E. Fuller, J. Fitzgerald, R. Gray, R. Gilson, J. Gri lea, D. Zenk Debate is both fun and nerve-wracking, and plenty of nerves were wracked and much fun was had during the season. The highlights of the season were Central's going to Duluth for a six round tournament, and coming in third place in a city meet at Washburn. Special recognition to Cecilia Forester for making the All-City Team. Can team members ever forget going to round robins on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, to Richfield, ST. Anthony, Spring Lake Park, Blaine, Anoka, etc.? Yes, debate is a mind expanding, team activity. ' STANDING: D. Rangaard, B. Gray, M. Bloberger, T. Kasch, J. Miller, S. Anderson, C. Young, R. THINK HOCKEY The 1975-76 hockey team did very well. Their over-all record was 10 wins and 11 loses. It is the first time In many years that Central has achieved double figures in the win column. The team can be very proud of themselves. Their accomplishments were the result of their willingness to work hard and suffer alittie pain. Pride became a big factor, not only as a team but for the players as individuals. A wise old man once said-- SKATE, PASS, SHOOT, AND HUSSLE, THEN YOUR ARE ON YOUR WAY TO VICTORY. Leading these individuals were our two State qualifiers, Richard Barron, 98 pound Section V AA Runner-Up, and Calvin Anderson, Section V AA Heavyweight Champion. As always the fine group of gentlemen who make up the Wrestling Squad worked hard to improve themselves and have come a long way throughout the season. Coaches Ed Schwartz and Larry Lam-parske are looking forward to a much improved season next year. WRESTLING _1 STAN nordic skiing This year's Nordic Ski Team was the best one ever in the history of Central High School. Seven men, led by captain Dan Johnson, skied in seven meets and in the Sectional Finals. Dan Johnson placed fifth in the Section, and represented Central at the state Cross-Country meet in Cloquet Minnesota. Four women made up the Women's Team. Tiger Straussor was their captain. Meets were held on Tuesdays and Thursdays of every week at Theodore Wirth Park. The Men's Course was 5-2 miles, and the Women's was half that. Both teams look very promising in the future. Three members of the Women's Team and five men will be returning. Jumpers Chris Stark and John Stensrud had a very good year. Both of them added more distance with every jump, and gained more points every meet. JUMPING 76 SVEN! slalom skiing WOMEN L. TO R: M. Franchett, ji Scott, Gil I is. MEN L. TO R: P. Captain Dave Najarian stated, I can honestly say we did nothing wrong. We rose to every calling, including Wash-bum. Wo did our best and are satisfied. JUMPING 77 Franz! The gymnastics team has Improved greatly. It has eight new members who add a lot to the team. Five of these girls presently go to Ramsey and Anthony. The Women's Track team started off slowly, consisting of some experienced seniors and a lot of inexperienced juniors and sophomores. On the basis of their accomplishments this year, Antonette Lampley and Debra White were the team's most valuable performors, with both going to Regionals and Antonette advancing to the State Tournament. However, the whole team can take credit for being the most valuable Women's Track team in Central's history. They set new team records In every event in which the competed. This year's team was a very young and and maturing one, finishing 5th in the city on the Varsity level and 1st on the Sophomore level. There were 3 members from Central who participated in the State meet this year: Andre Griffin, who won in the high jump, Phil Maddox, who finished 2nd in the 220 yd. dash and Tom Herbst, who took 1st in the shot put. Central should have a fine 1975-76 season ahead of them with the return of seniors Bill Gray, and Scott Anderson. Also returning is first year magnet David Elliott. For nearly three months, the golf team practiced diligently in the confines of the basement golf-room. With only two of the twelve girls having past golf competition experience, the future golf season look rather bleak, but once the girls played a few matches, improvement and confidence began to show throughout the whole team. Although the teams record was only 3 wins and 7 losses, an upset victory over Roosevelt showed the girls they had the ability to become a better than average golf team.
