Text from Pages 1 - 128 of the 1975 volume:

DHU jut IIP lose 41 ; Dedication Mr. Russell Miller is almost indispensable at Central High School. He teaches Social Studies, offering a variety of subjects, from Japan and Korea to SCIP (School and Community Involvement Program). He is a dedicated and exciting teacher, throwing his whole being into his work. He has coached the Debate team since its formation 4 years ago, and has brought it closer each year to winning the championship. He has also been the Yearbook advisor at Central for seven years, showing great determination and unbelievable self-control, even in the desperate chaos before each deadline. Yet his work often goes unnoticed. Mr. Miller is a loyal friend to the students, treating every one as an individual and trying to inspire each to do his best. So we, the Yearbook Staff of 1975, arc proud to dedicate the '75 Centralian to Russ Miller, with deep gratitude and respect. While most of us graduate from high school, after we graduate we have the freedom to go our own separate ways. These years of our lives we are always learning new things. Somehow we lose touch with old friends, and old thoughts. A yearbook will help us remember. As your lives seem to become more involved, a look at your yearbook will refresh your mind with memories that you thought were long gone. You may be shocked at your picture twenty years from today, but as we all grow and learn, once in a while it is nice to look back. 3 JIM ALEXANDER Chess Club, Chess team, National Honor Society, t.c.i.t.u. Senior Advice To Underclassmen Don't let things get you down. Go to class and stick it out. Get involved, but take it easy. Enjoy tiie school and have a good time. Get your required courses out of the way first. An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Keep the school spirit. Try harder. Mellow out. Don't eat the lunches, and go out for the tennis team. Get an alarm clock. Join the choir. Be happy when you graduate. Be yourselves. Join the AFS club. Be friends and keep a smile. Have as much fun as you can. Get out of school as soon as possible - there arc better things to do. Don't work too hard. Don't worry about school. Whatever will be, will be. Live it up. Quit while you're ahead. Stop running in the halls. Party only after school and on week-ends. Toke up only during snack break. Don't get caught skipping. Develop goals for yourself - don't just drift through life. Keep out of A. P. English. Go out for sports. Keep the Spirit of 75 going in your hearts. Flunk now, to avoid the rush. Study hard while you've got the chance, or you'll wish you had. Know what you believe in is right and give it your all. Keep on truckin! Play it cool. Do what you like to do. Get it together. Make these years at Central the best of your life. Get on the good foot and keep your head to the sky! Get involved. It's half the fun of school. Keep a very open mind. Get out while you can. Grow up! Each person must make his own mistakes. Stand up for Boogie! Have pride in Central. Behave! Keep cool, and don't try to be a fool, or else you' 11 make me lose my un'cool. Keep your grades up so you get out on time. Live one day at a time. Don't break anything in chemistry. He shoots first and asks questions later. Keep the school together. Make Central Number 1 in Minneapolis. 31 A Friendly Guest At Central Helen Doubal is a foreign exchange student from England. She came to the United States in the AFS (American Field Services) program. She has a warm and friendly personality and is eager to get involved. She has added a special quality to Central this year. We are proud to call her our friend and will miss her when she goes home. Dear Centralians: I suppose this is really a thank you for having me letter, although I honestly did not feel like a visitor because I think at this school that is a status next to impossible - you're either IN it or OUT of it, and not just passing through. I have felt very much at home here, even though many things have been so new and different for me. When I first came to Central, I was impressed by the size of it and I wondered how I would ever be able to find my way around the building, and up and down the four staircases with the seventy eight steps. This was second only to the problem of remembering all the faces, and understanding the American accents and the strange slang that people used. I learned that English and American are practically two different languages, and I found that misunderstandings in this respect are sometimes fun. Rituals such as registration, pep fests and football games were totally alien to me and I had never before seen a Cheerleader. To someone who has never seen a Cheerleader, pep fests are a unique experience. I shall miss them. School in England is far more formal than it is here, and we do not have pep fests, or Homecoming, or Sno-Daze, or Graduation Ceremonies or Big Games on Friday night. Although much of this seemed weird at first, I have enjoyed all of it and I'm glad I have had a chance to be a part of it; however, having seen Central's footballers carried off, game by game, I think perhaps that English soccer, rugby, and cricket are safer... ! Another big difference between Central and schools at home is the range of courses offered - it is so nice to be able to take subjects such as Human Liberation, Swahili and Debate, and to take such a variety. But best of all about Central is the people. I think I have learned more from everyone here than anything else, and this is all part of the AFS experience - which I recommend everybody to try: I have never before met such a large collection of individuals in one school, and I think that Central must be quite unique because of this. I am really very glad that I came and I shall miss this place, and everyone in it. I hope lots of people will come and visit me in England. This has been a jolly good year. Thank you; and at the risk of sounding sentimental, I must say that red and blue will always be especially significant colours for me. The first, because the team was make up primarily of first year players. There were only eleven seniors on the team and only three of them had played as juniors. The other reason was injuries. We had thirteen major injuries ranging from broken ankles to serious head injuries. In spite of this we won our first game of the season, and lost four games by the margin of the extra point. With so many people returning next year, we expect to be a contender for the city championship. ¥ Pioneers Pioneers Pioneers Pioneers Pioneers Pioneers Pioneers Pioneers Pioneers 15 - 6 6 - 12 6 - 8 6 - 44 0 - 21 6 - 35 6 - 7 6 - 34 6 - 8 Rosemount Roosevelt North Edison South Washburn West Southwest Henry Coaches- R. The girls' swim team has enjoyed a year of building the number of swimmers on the team from 3 to 14 girls. Several girls had outstanding times in district competition. The swim team is anticipating a winning season next year. Central's girls' tennis team started out as a group of inexperienced individuals. They then became a team. In the coming years their new-found experience will enhance both them and the team. Volleyball - Our first defeat was a heartfelt loss, because that team won only one game the whole conference season. Our final defeat was a soulfelt loss. We were so eager and ready to play that it reached a point of everyone being over-anxious. Baffling errors caused anxiety and the situation on the floor went from bad to worse. We tied in the city conference with South with a 5-4 total. The biggest achievement a cross country runner can make is to keep bringing his time down. Central's male runners accomplished it this year, with great individual discipline and motivation. They can hold their heads up high and look forward to next year. This was the 1st year that Central had a girls' cross country team. The season lasted from 2 weeks before school started to the middle of October. Little by little the girls became stronger and faster. They placed 5th in the district, 3rd in the city and logged more than 200 miles. 46 Boogie! CHEERLEADERS: LEFT TO RIGHT: D. Nolan, L. The team did well for it's first year. Even though the won-lost record wa not the best, all the team members seemed to have alot of fun. With mo st of the team returning next year, and an All City player on the team, the future looks bright. Sophomore Basketball STANDING: Coach Mr. Boone, T. Thompson, L. Owens, T. Travis, A. The wrestling team was lead by the excellent wrestling of Jim Johnson, John Smith, Calvin Anderson, and Richard Barron, who were among the best of an excellent team. Richard Barron was undefeated and went to the State Tournament. He lost his first match in overtime, by an official's decision. Wrestling Action Tonight! 77 Hockey Taking the whole picture into account, this year's Varsity hockey team has done well. They have cut their goals against in half. The team has played some exciting games, that have included both team and individual highlights. It is hoped that this will start a new hockey tradition at Central. 'ING: Coach Tim Alm J7Hohn, M., Blobe: E?eC P. Wodarz, jr. Kas B. Gray, D. Lunmborg, Anderson, R. Cciske Lu ibeig, J. Bury. 79 Men’s Swimming City Champs 1st ROW: R. Wilson, F. Dopp, D. Gunther, R. Dopp. Coaches: Roger Anderson, Linda Fritschel. The swim team enjoyed one of its best seasons in recent history. It captured the City and District 17 title. Nine swimmers advanced to the Region meet, and four to the state meet. Next year team will prove to be even stronger with all but two of the team members returning. Captains of this yean championship team were Ricky Bruce and Jim Nielsen. 81 Men’s Gymnastics GIRL'S GYMNASTIC TEAM; LEFT TO RIGHT: K. Kasch, S. Medlock, C. Farrell, L. Franchett, Coach D. Paule, D. Johnson, T. Swanson, A. Whitcomb, K. Wherley. SECOND ROW: B. Swanson, P. Wendel, R. Gilson, P. Wyman. Both the cross country and slalom divisions of this years ski team were very successful. The slalom team was fourth in the city. This year marked the beginning of women's slalom skiing for the team. The cross-country team had a large turnout, which makes the future for the team look bright. The women's cross-country division was up to a full squad and they gained in experience during the season. Both jumpers from this years team will be returning next year, so there will be no weak spot there. Mr Debate LEFT TO RIGHT: Pippa Holroyde, Helen Doubal, Matt Shapiro, and Sue Holt. This year's varsity team placed third in the city. Although this was quite an accomplishment, the members of the team felt disappointed, figuring they had a chance to win it all. Next year's prospects look good, with several novice debaters returning - Martha Ohm, Alison Zenk, Cecilia Forester, Elizabeth Fuller, Mike Baumgartner, Gary Olsen and Ray Albright. Other debators this year were Carol Gilson, Oliver Brown, Gary Cunningham, Leslie Fithian, Dedra Herron, Sue Hubbard, Elaine Lossing, Carl McKinley, Bill Freeman and Nick Zahareas. Letter winners were Sue Holt, the team captain, Matt Shapiro, Pippa Holroyde and Helen Doubal. 86 Table Tennis Team 1975 This year Central had the best table tennis team it has ever had. The team's members were John Rivers, Jerome Wilson, Vic Halverson and Jim Alexander. It was hard work and team effort that won them the title of second place in the State AAA League. They lost in the state finals to undefeated Edina West 9-7, which was Edina's closest match of the season. John Rivers also took 'All-State'.for the third year in a row. Next year's team will need some help if it plans to accomplish as much, for Jerome Wilson is the only returning member. His name was Jon Anderson. He played shortstop and batted over 500 this year. It was his third varsity year. In baseball, if you're strong up the middle, you're bound to do well. With John at shortstop, Marcellus Grandbeny at second, Rob Young catching, and Ricky Fisher in center field, we felt we could come out on top. Unfortunately some of the other teams were a little stronger. CXir conference record was 3 wins and 7 looses. We won our first play-off game beating Marshal U., then lost the next to a strong South team which took City Title. We had a new coach this year, which sometimes makes it difficult to get the team together like it should be. His name is Mr. Smith, and we felt he did a great job. Returning players for the 1975 team are, Harlan B. (Jr.) Marcellas G. (Jr.), Billy J. (Jr.), John R. (Jr.), Vic H. (Jr.), Rob Y. (Soph). We also expect a lot of help from this year's sophomore team. Sophomore The 1974 Central Sophomore Baseball Team finished the season strong, winning their last two games. The Sophomores defeated first place South 5-4 and beat a tough West team 6-3, thus finishing the season with a 3-7 record, losing close games to Southwest and Mar-shall-U. The Captains of the Sophomore team, Mike Burk-hard t and Calvin Anderson, are looking forward to a good Varsity season in '75 with many good returning players.
