Starting with Homecoming, Drum Majors Vickie Petrie and Pamela Crisler led the band on a performing trek, marching in three home football games. Although the band was unable to perform at many home basketball games, they more than made up for it during pep fests and concerts. As with most organizations at C.H.S. the sophomore invasion left us with a band eighty-five percent sophomore. So, as the year of 72-73 closes upon us, the Central band tips its' marching hat, saluting a year full of concerts, marches, pepfests-and fun. our fearless leader 4- o hot fun in the summer time homecoming '72’ Community involvement was the theme for this years Homecoming. The festivities began at one. Ex-Viking, Earsell Mackbee, was master of ceremonies at the coronation where King Herbert and Queen Robin were crowned. Students then drifted down to the lunchroom to listen to the records at the soc hop. The big game against the Roosevelt Teddies started at three-thirty. The stands were filled with people who held Human Relations balloons and confetti. The whole game went great, from our team victory (13-7) to the band, drum majors and Pompom girls at halftime. Everyone in the community was invited to the picnic after the game. Food was served to nearly 500 people. The cold may have kept some away but many stayed to enjoy the company and food. By eight-thirty many Central students had changed clothes and were back for the final event, the Homecoming Dance. The largest turn-out at the dance in many years talked, danced, and listened to music until the Midwest Express packed up and left at twelve. What a Day! Many fine football players had graduated from the previous team and the sophomores of that season were an unknown quality. In the first two games the pioneers looked very ragged with the defense doing the bulk of the work of holding off the opponents. In the third game the young offensive team began to get the feel of the city league. In the fourth game disaster struck, the team was thoroughly routed by Southwest. At this point people felt that this would be just another season at Central, that members of the team would surely give up after that beating. For Homecoming the team beat Roosevelt. Then they beat Vocational, Marshal 1-U, and Henry to finish the season at 7 and 1, second in the city behind unbeaten Washburn. The team went to Moorhead in it's final game and was beaten 12-42. i offense standing: H. Thompson, R. Davis, W. Whitmore, K. Tendle, R. Fisher row 2: R. Curry, R. Belton, J. Jones, G. Booker, T. All week long the school had been filled with talk about who the new coach was. (Richard Robinson). He had come from Voc. That was bad news! But soon after the first meeting all the talk and bad feelings about Coach Robinson were gone. We knew we had a good thing! Speaking for the team, it was the feeling of all, that Coach Robinson gave us something no other Coach had ever done. He had given us a physical and mental lift, which was the key to our winning season. Coaches: Mr. Cross, Mr. Lamparske, Mr. Carter Mr. Robinson, Mr. Keenan To sum things up Coach Robinson is one of those tilings, you just sit back and appreciate the fact that it happened to you. Thanks Mr. Robinson! Robert Belton Charles Burton Herbert Thompson III! cross country 1972 Contrary to common belief, Central's Cross Country team was not made up of guys who couldn't make it big in a major sport. Their work out was running from five to eight miles a night, which was at least equal to other team’s practices. The team improved quite a bit from last year, placing ninth in the city meet. The team's big let down was the almost non-existent support of the other students. With all their hard work and improvement they have laid a nice base for next years top Contending team. kneeling: B. Moving up from basement status, the team was in an organized league with a professional coach and a school budget. The team practiced at Magoo's Table Tennis Club. The team members were coached by Hal Lupinek, from Magoo's, and Mr. Aim from Central. The girls worked hard all season and surprised themselves by placing second in their three practice meets. Leaving after three years is Lisa Doerr, the backbone of the team more or less. Also leaving this year are seniors: G. Gould, C. Rosenbaum, and K. Harkins. Kathy, together with Lisa, raked in three ribbons from the final meet. Most of the others on the team will be returning next year. The season was an enjoyable one. said Coach Wilford. CE AjrRf theater at the top of the stairs presents The crews help get it together too. Seniors will remember three years ago, when coach Anderson, and friend David Hirschey, pulled together a rookie team of 19 sophomores. The team struggled through two seasons with some heartbreaking defeats. This years swimming team was the finest Central has ever had, finishing the season with a record of 6 wins and 4 losses, and a super-successful non-conference season. With the largest number of seniors on a team in the city, all of them from the original 19 sophomores, the entire team swam exceedingly well and saw the reaching of their biggest goal by handing to Roosevelt one of those he art breakers. Overcoming a few crippling difficulties and thick skulls, the team went on to break every swimming record previously set by past Central swimmers. Next year, with many good sophomores and juniors returning, we expect to sec those records broken again. Through the great leadership of our captain Jack Strawder, the team surprised everyone and finished second, beating the first place team - Washburn. This years team had Woody Rhodes and Rick Fisher named to the All City Team, and Jack Strawder and Wayne Whitmore made Honorable Mention. The team finished the season with a 13-5 record. rJfSm rt «£S l graduation... prom...golf.. .baseball...t rack...vacati on...graduati on...prom...g olf... track.. We won many trophies throughout the state and set new records in every meet we participated in. Some of the highlights of the season were Central's capturing the second consecutive city championship and setting new records in the 440 dash by Charles Walker, the mile relay by Robert Johnson, Creg Cray, Albert Ranee and Charles Walker. Other first place winners in the city meet were: 100 yard dash, Ricky Davis; 880 relay, Ricky Nevils, Ron Groce, Cary Childress and Ricky Davis; High and low hurdles, Ron Groce; and 220 yds dash, Charles Walker. Central has had much success, winning many meets and finished the season 4th in the state. With many returning lettermen wc are looking forward to another fine season. Coach L. For some reason the girls don't like to compete in running. They came in fifth place over all but their performance was witlwas ears. Even at the final meet we had to substitute because of a conflict with other activities. Coach Wilford Team Members: J. Armstrong, C. Anderson, D. White, D. Whitlock, J. Rosenbloom, R. Bormann, J. Glaman Centrals tennis team survived the out of season tennis season beginning practice Sept. 7 and playing their first match Sept. 27 against West at the Nicollet Tennis Center. Their schedule continued through Oct. The last match was played in bitterly cold weather - some players wore gloves. Unfortunately, one of the best players, Lauren Green, dislocated her shoulder and was out for the season after playing three matches. Many of the players are juniors, so next years team should be more experienced. 1972 mens tennis team captain: pete bruce The 1972 Men's Tennis Team strived for a winning season as it was coach Whitey Thorson’s last year at Central. It was a tough task as the team had only two returning lettermen. They were Co-Captains F. Bruce and D. Tinberg. These captains had their work cut out for them, as the new players were willing but inexperienced. Because of their work, the new tennis coach will be working with a veteran team!
