This rating was influenced by the loss of many Seniors, and head coach Don Hudson. Eric Eversley replaced him, adding two new assistants Larry Lam-parske and Mel Cross. The team was headed by Tri-captains Walter Groce, Alan Lee, and James Smith. As the football season pro gressed, opponents began to take Central quite seriously. After a setback in our second game, the Pioneers went on to win four straight games, before bowing to Washburn in a game which determined the city championship. At the close of the football season Central finished third in the city, with a five win and three loss record. Central's finish in the standings was a surprise to some, but not to the Central football team, whose determined play was in large responsible for their winning season. If you've ever ran until it hurts, just think about running until your're numb. That's what Cross Country is all about. The length of the course this year was three miles. The team was the best we've had in five years, with three victories this season. Next year should be just as good, with Peter Bruce, Greg Frazier, Oliver Medlock, and Dave Waughtel returning. The Seniors who ran this year are captain Doug Selby, Dean Brown, and Mike Wol-lack. The top three runners were Doug Selby, Peter Bruce, and Oliver Medlock. All in all it was a very good year for The Barefoot Boys. FRONT LEFT TO RIGHT: B. Bork, P. Bruce, D. Waughtel, D. Brown, O. Medlock, BACK:M. Mallory, G. Frazier, D. Selby (captain), M. TENNIS 1970 The 1970 tennis team coached by Mr. Whitey Thoren-son, had a difficult season. Two causes were the absence of Seniors from the team, and the teacher’s strike. Because of the strike the team had as many as four meets in one week. Certainly a rough schedule for any sport! The team showed alot of desire and enthusiasm with many hours of practice. This year with all nine experienced men returning, the team expects to have one of the best Central tennis teams of the decade. Peter Powers a serve. The Dynamic Duo. The 1970 track team was equal to Central tradition of one of the best in the state. They finished third in the city, just missing second by one point. Four men went to the state meet--Greg Lewis, Ricky Davis, Walter Groce, and Bruce Berry. Walter Groce placed first in the broad jump. Greg Lewis finished second in the 440 and third in the 220. A full track team picture was not taken. LEFT TO RIGHT: Walter Gross, Ricky Davis, Greg Lewis, Bruce Berry. TRACK —70 The ’70 baseball team led by Captain Pat Rush displayed the qualities of determination, perseverence, and fortitude. Although finishing lower than recent Central baseball teams, they resembled Central's district Champions of '65 and '68. Outstanding at short-stop, pitching, and catcher, they needed a little more help at the other positions. With seven returning regulars the 1971 season looks bright and maybe another championship. BASKETBALL —71 . . . “THE STATE” The Pioneers receive the trophy for Class AA Champs— sending them on to the State Basketball Tournament! A very remarkable season”... For the first time in 22 years. Central's basketball team went to the State Basketball Tournament. The Pioneers, finishing 2nd in the city conference, went on to win region's Class AA Championship--sending them on to State! The small Central amazed everyone with their speed and ball control, in their victory over Mankato. Falling to North St. Paul, in their second game of the tournament, the Pioneers came back to win the consolation game, and 3rd place in the State. Led by captains Emmanuel Rogers and Ron White, the team, though small, made up for their lack of height by their tremendous speed, and used this to their advantage. Em Rogers, Ron White, and Walt Groce made up our all-city, all-region, and all-tournament players. Calvin Whitmore was named to the Wcco all-state team. Senior Phil Terres, and Juniors Ron Groce and Ryan Watson helped to round out the team, who should be on top again next year as Central usually is and belongs!!! PI-ON-EE-RS! Their physical and mental exhaustion at the end of a game would have made any true Hockey fan proud of the club. Their season record left alot to be desired, but their attitude, hustle, and determination was among the tops. The future looks bright with the Magnet School skaters, and the combination of Jr. High talent. Hockey will be on the move at Central for the 71-72 school year. 46 mm L. TO R., ROW 1: A. Poole, D. SWIMMING This year's Tri-captains, along with the other graduating Seniors, can take pride in the improved swimming program at Central. Their dedication has made it possible for the 19 returning underclassmen to come back and better the records established this year. This year's team, for the first time in recent history, went over the 500 mark in the win-loss column, and in so doing, set new team records in nine of the eleven events. They won 499 points this year as compared with a total of 286 points last year. Central should have a very strong team next year. 48 'Va -V V W-V -V- WRESTLING —’71 ROW 1: R. McNeal, B. Roche, L. The team consisted of 14 underclassmen and 8 Seniors, led by Captains Larry Maghrak, and Bob Jeffery. Coaches Keenan and Lamparski both feel that this years team worked harder and improved more than ■ any other team in Central’s history. The teams sea-I son was highlighted by the wrestling of Terry Hollins, who is rated by coaches as the best wrestler in the conference. Next years team should be Outstanding says Coach Keenan, with progressive improvement by returning lettermen and a good crop of new wrestlers. CAPTAINS: Bob Jeffery and Larry Maghrak. Coaches: Mr. Lamparske, and Mr. Keenan. SKI TEAM: LEFT TO RIGHT: Jim Stienkraus,-Captain, Vincent Scott, Don Gustafson, Mr. Kramer, B. Jones, Roce May. SKI TEAM 1971 Central's Ski team is only two years old. There were two returning members to the team this year-D. C. Gustafson and Jim Steinkraus. The team only had three members who had ever skied before. Led by captain Jim Stienkraus, John Steffel, and coach Harry Kramer the team , being a little inexperienced didn't do too well in their meets, but are looking forward to next year, when with many more experienced skiers returning, hope to have a good season. 52 My Fellows of Central, My year in the United States, in Minneapolis, is almost over, and I never spent such an exciting time. This experience of mine has been full of true human relations, but all this happened because I met beautiful people, young people, that I'll never forget all my life long. At the beginning of my year, as you remember, I asked for your help; well you gave me much, much, more. You gave me the pride of feeling a human being. Through all of you I understood completely the importance of everyone's life: now I know the real way of learning! But I want to say a particular thank-you to my wonderful American family, I would never have thought to live in such a splendid situation in my A. F.S. experience, and I’ll never forget them, because you Dad Clarence, you Mum Donna, you Chuck, and you Diana are really my second family. Also my teachers were my favorites, and I think that you my fellows, are very lucky to have them teaching you. In Central I found wonderful young people, and now I hope in the future, because the future history is in the hands of us, young people, we, all together, must build a world, a world of peace, where the word War must be only a dreadful memory. Finally I thank all of you my fellows of Central, I thank you alot and I want to say a great good-bye PIERALLINI ROBERTO A.F.S. 1970-71 Pierallini, Roberto A. F.S. 1970-71 SENIORS ™. The program began with the Homecoming royalty. The Ladies of the Court and Princesses were escorted to their places on stage. The Football Tri-captains, Sonny Groce, Alan Lee, and James Smith, came up on stage and after a few minutes of indecision, crowned Debbie McFarland to reign over Homecoming festivities. Next came the talent show with songs, dance, alumini cheerleaders and even a try from the faculty. To top off the day was the Homecoming dance which featured Salt, Pepper, and Spice. Because of rain our H. C. Football game was played Sept. 28, where our Central men came up with a 44-6 victory over Marshall-U and a perfect ending for our 1970 Homecoming. i “CUT THE CARDS’ 85 Princess Margie Brooke escorted by Alan Knutson PRINCESSES Princess Naomi Midtdahl escorted by Lloyd Schaeffer Princess Judy Jones escorted by BUI Rod Princess Nancy Sjolund escorted by Kim Bible LEFT SIDE: LADIES, Bobbie Miller, Claire Green, Debbie Wickman, Carolyn Whitmore, Brenda Medlock, MIDDLE LEFT: PRINCESSES, Margie Brooke, Nancy Sjolund, Naomi Midtdahl, Judy Jones, and Queen Debbie McFarland.
