Principal, Mr. Williams, Asst. Principal, Mr. McCoy, Uason Officer, Mr. W'orkcuff, Principal, Mr. Roehning. It will soon be two years since I returned to Central after an absence of about a dozen years. I have been pleased to note that a majority of students are still serious about doing a good job in school and earning a high school diploma. Most of you arc also concerned citizens who are actively helping your fellow human beings to gain an equality of opportunity and citizenship. I especially wish to praise those who have given of themselves the extra effort that is needed to make one proud to be a Cen-tralite and to make me proud to be at Central. Many students could be named as outstanding citizens, but I am sure I am not even aware of all who have helped to pull the load. I have seen many of you as members of our athletic teams, as cheerleaders, as Human Relations Committee officers and members, as Student Council officers and members, as office aides, as choir and band members, and as members of many other organizations both in and out of school. There have also been single individuals, many unknown, who have also contributed in many ways. To all of you who have done what you could for Central, you have already been rewarded, especially in knowing that your contribution made you a better person in some way and gained for you the something that will make the game of life easier for you. I wish all of you seniors the best of luck in all of your future endeavors. Those of us who stay behind will be looking for news of your accomplishments. 6 G. E. Roehning L. TO R. GIRLS AND BOYS STATE Fellow Central Students, Let me take this opportunity to thank you all very much for helping to make my year in the States a big success and an unforgctable experience for me. Thank you for the interest you have shown in my country and for the efforts you made to make me feel at home here. 1 have become quite attached to Central and I am looking forward to the time when, as a graduate, I can return to see how the school is getting along. I would like to convey special thanks to my American family for looking after me so well and to my teachers for helping me out anytime I didn't understand something--which tended to be fairly frequent. Minneapolis has become a second home to me and Central a new area full of friends and memories that will last forever. Keep the Central spirit high, till 1 come back. Thank you all very much, Derek Guille—A. F. S. 1969-70 DEREK The Baseball Team, under the coaching of Jim Anderson, exhibited great sportsmanship and outstanding playing ability. They were represented on the All City Team by pitcher Larry Whitmore and second baseman Steve Berry. The team of 69 was in close competition for the city title, and went into the District 17 play-offs with a record of 6 wins and 4 losses. FRONT ROW, E. Rogers, W. Louma, C. Schlichting, P. Rush, C. We started by placing fourth in the Twin City Indoor Meet, but we took home more trophies than the winner. The highlights of the season were Captain Laursen's city record in the 880 yard dash and placing third in the State meet, Dwayne Bowie's victories in the 100 and 220 yard dashes, and Kenny Gary's first place victory in the city 440 yard dash. With many returning lettermen we look forward to another fine track season. TRACK 49 L. TOR., W. Foster, J. DeYoe, J. Waughtel, W. Hanson, K. Biegert, J. Edison, A. Knutson, D. Hoerdt, M. Among Central's netmen included two excellent singles players, Jack DeYoe and Tom Leedham. TENNIS The 1969 Golf Team had an average season last year. Lettermen Chuck Parker and Leo Sioris will be returning for the 1970 season. GOLF L. TO R. J. Coodlow, C. Parker, Coach Hovey, L. Sioris. CROSS COUNTRY Coach Oliver, B. Schaeffer, M. Mallory, G. Hcstness, M. Wollak, D. Selby, T. Miller, P. Bruce. Cross Country has always been a rough sport here at Central, but this year was even more engrueling than ever because the length of the race was changed from four miles to six miles. This was a race that separated the men from the boys. Speed, endurance, and a real love for running are the real requirements for the rough and tough Cross Country Team. 51 FOOTBALL Central 36 North 0 Central 32 West 0 Central 22 Edison 0 Central 28 South 8 Central 6 Washburn 20 Central 38 Southwest 6 Central 8 Roosevelt 10 Central 44 Henry 6 The 1969 Football Squad lived up to their motto to Take Care of Business. Under the strong leadership of Captain Ken Gary and Co-Captains Bruce Berry, and Dave Jensen, the fighting pioneers finished die season with a record of six wins and two losses. Even though we didn't win the championship on paper, in our minds and hearts we know we were the best. We are very proud of the exciting season our great team gave us and we are even prouder of our five All-City players - Bruce Berry, Mike Eva void, Ken Gary, David Johnson and Mike Turner. Five All-City players were the most Central has ever had selected for this honor in its history. FRONT ROW: M. Turner, M. Swanson, H. Johnson, D. Johnson, M. Evavold, B. Berry, K. Gary, D. Jenson. D. Poise, Finesc, quickness, and knowledge arc just as valuable as pure strength in this grueling sport. Several underclassmen are wrestling this year and will be back to make Central a strong contender next year. This year's seniors, although not strong in numbers, were very strong in desire and were a very strong influence on the underclassmen and their records and progress. FRONT: J. Smith, C. Richard, K. Central's 1970 Hockey Team rebounded from a dissapointing start to finish with one of the best hockey records of the last decade. The final standings showed 4-8-2 record. In their last four games the Pioneers collected 7 out of a possible 8 points in the standings. Head coach Curtis Emery along with assistant coaches Richard Oliver and Noel Jenkc worked hard and the results were a smoothed, plished hockey team by the end of the season. oi HOCKEY 1970 Manager, C. The Pioneers did it again by being Number 1 for the second straight year with a 9-1 record. Their overall record was 13-2. Their non-conference record was 4-1. The only explanations for the season’s success would be the Central Five, who just outclassed all the other city teams. We had superior scoring in Ron White, Mike Evavold, Dwain Robinson, Emanuel Rogers and Bruce Berry. Evavold and Robinson crashed the boards game after game, to out rebound the other teams all season. White, Evavold and Rogers were in double figures almost every' game. Reserves Leo Sioris and Cal Whitmore did a fine job of substituting and helped bring us on to victory. White, Rogers, and Whitmore should help lead Central on to another victori- ous season. Under the coaching of Dean Larson, Marsha Scott and Mrs. Bagley, the team captured the Girls City title and also made outstanding showings at the Anoka and Cooper invita-tionals. Under the fine direction of Darlene Adams and Pam Lawrence, Homecoming 1969 was a great success. A special thanks goes out to Mr. Heidcr, Mis. Bag ley, and Miss Kraning, who contributed so much to the great success. The American Field Service chib is a program which Central has participated in for the past three years. The purpose of the AFS club is to raise money to enable a student from another country to come to our school. Among this years activities, there was a soccer game against, the German Club, in which the Spaniards had a brilliant victory. There was also the annual Christmas party, a volleyball game plus a broomball game against the German Club, and a spring picnic. The Spanish Club Banquet was held at La Casa Coranado. As a new activity this year the club made and sold pinatas. The German Club had a late Start this year, but continued with many of their traditional activities. Among these activities, was their annual soccer game, brightening holiday spirits by selling mistletoe, Christmas Party, Picnic, and their banquet in the Spring. The Officers of this club should be given special recognition because without them this club might not have been in existence this year. GERMAN CLUB German Club Officers; Mr. Anderson (Advisor), L. Vanstrom, B. Todd (Pres.), J. Rudnik (Vice-Pres.). □0 C The Tri-Ettes started off the year with a candle lighting recognition service. The highlight of the year was the Christmas Dance at Benton Hall, December 6. The Cas-sanovas played to a theme of an Icy Island of Dream. Other activities included the chapter meetings, Joints with other schools, overnight at Lyman Lodge, Easter breakfast and the Spring Picnic. HOMECOMING'69 Homecoming arrived on October 24 this year. Many Pioneers showed their spirit by dressing up in the traditional pioneer costumes. The processional of royalty started at 1:30 and was followed by the crowning of Queen Bridget. The talent show this year showed a lot of variety and was very entertaining. The homecoming football game was played down at Parade Stadium this year. Our players played their hardest but were overcome by a last minute field goal from Roosevelt. After the game, Pioneers danced to the music of the Marauders. Thanks to the homecoming committee for another successful Homecoming at Central High.
