ADMINISTRATION Dear Mr. Roehning, The student body at Central High School would like to extend to you an official welcome. Upon your returnys Principal you encountered many challenges. In closing, we hope that your first year as Central's principal has been rewarding and satisfying, and we'll see you next fall. 8 Student Body Mr. Kim Workcuff; Liaison Officer. Student action in the Fine Arts department is embodied in our Band and in the Visual Potpourri. Our Band performs at nearly all school functions and is especially appreciated for spicing up pep fests. FINE ARTS AND BUSINESS Business: Miss Adams, Mr. Cieminski, Mrs. Gahm, Mrs. Gronberg, Mr. Thayer, Mrs. Riley. Team-teaching was found successful last year and was continued this year. 13 HOME ECONOMICS The main function of the Home Economics department is to help girls, and occasionally a few boys, become better homemakers. In the Clothing classes one learns more than just clothing construction, as budgeting and a basic knowledge of fabrics is also essential. In Foods, one acquires such skills as meal preparation, nutrition, and how to prepare a balanced menu. The Home Economics department also involves food and clothing service classes and an interesting Home and Family Living course. INDUSTRIAL ARTS Home Economics: Miss Sargin, Mrs. Palmer, Mrs. Daniels. The Industrial Arts department includes Metals, Electronics, Auto Mechanics, Wood, and Drafting classes, and are offered to both boys and girls. Students, both kinds, are taught useful skills for vocational and academic work. Mr. Blom, Mr. Klohs, Mr. Strukel, Mr. Frelund, Mr. Withrow. Math: Mr. Beske, Mr. McNamer, Mr. Hansen, Mr. Thoreson Language: Mr. Lundheim, Miss Kraning, Mr. Frank LANGUAGE French, German, and Spanish are the three languages offered at Central. Subjects included are Elementary Algebra, Geometry, Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry, Senior Math, and Math Analysis. An extra attraction is a terminal connected by telephone to the Honeywell computer. 15 SCIENCE The Science Department, headed by Mr. Hovey, works as closely together as its subjects — Biology, Phisics, and Chemistry — are related. Hugo's home country is Argentina, but his American home is with Jim Gagnon and his family. When asked how he liked it here, Hugo replied, In my frank opinion and as an American Field Service Student this year, I have found at Central High School an attractive and unique atmosphere, filled with the good fellowship and high spirits of its students. To describe Central in its daily life would be complicated and puzzling. Its students looks are changing day to day as a result of the different character that each one has, character that has a tremendous influence in what each one is doing. Perhaps the first day my school seemed so big and empty for me, but very soon it was transformed into a big and close family with the great responsibility to serve this country in the near future and so attest that the talented students today will be the great men of tomorrow. As a different way of life, we can find that in any country, but going directly to the behavior of the students, the difference doesn't exist, except, I have seen a remarkable tendency in many students to be free and independent, perhaps of a consequence of one of the most valued things that man can have: enjoyment of a full liberty emblem that makes this country so great and powerful. To be sure, everything will remain as a fascinating experience in the gallery of my remembrances. I want to say thank you very much again to everybody. 26 IN MEMORIAM GARY ALLEN With all the excitement, students at Central missed the presence and spirit of these two students. They showed team skill, speed, and endurance as well as individually meeting each challenge with traditional determination and backing it up with long, hard hours of practice. Our relay team couldn't be touched. It consisted of Dwayne Bowles, Richard Welton, Reggie Berry, and Andre Smith who experienced first place victories time and time again. The entire team's efforts were rewarded with the city title, the District 17 title, and second place in the State meet. Hats off to the track team and to Coach Williams. STANDING: Mr. Oliver, P. You will see them running around our track early each morning in the Fall, or around the third floor after school. Many members ran up to fifty miles a week to increase their stamina and resistance to fatigue. The entire team looked up to their leader and captain, Marcel (Duke) Laursen, Marcel was one of the top runners in the city and ran in the State Meet where he came in eleventh place. Congratulations to the whole team for all their hard work. 70 TENNIS'68 The 1968 Tennis team was a healthy bunch. They got a lot of exercise and fresh air for their hard work. This sport takes excellent timing, skill and coordination. Due to the negligence of the 1968 Centralian Staff, we must apologize for not having a team picture. This is just a sampling of a few members of the team in action. 71 STANDING: P. Hardy, D. Hoerdt, G. Anderson, S. Hartung, S. Rains, J. Hanson, Ass't Coach — Eric Evcrsley. SEATED: B. Oriendahl, P. The team went through a winless season again, because of the lack of boys that came out. The teams leading swimmers were Jack DeYoe; backstroke, Tim Erickson; free-style, and diving, Doug Hoerdt; distance swimmer, and Gary Anderson; backstroke. With a team of only twelve boys, compared to 25 last year, they really put out the effort. Promising Juniors, Tim Erickson, Pat Hardy, and Steve Rains point to a possibility of a season with some wins. FIRST ROW: D. Bowles.). Brewington, M. Webb, S. Berry. B. Lochen, B. Person, J. Central's Pioneers got off to a slow start this year. The team was young and had little experience. Besides gaining the necessary experience on the field, our men slowly got used to their new coaching staff, and the staff, headed by Coach Hudson, slowly got used to the team. They finally picked up the old Pioneer spirit, ending the season with a 14 - 7 victory over Marshall-U, and a 14 -12 victory over Edison. FOOTBALL Would you like to fly ? Push him away! An injury to Jan in the latter part of the season hurt the team considerably. Next year, returning Juniors and Sophomores will combine experience and determination to put together a more successful season. 78 WRESTLING This years Hockey team was headed by the new Coach Curtin Emery. The squad, consisting of almost all juniors, put on a fine performance. Helped by the superb skills of their Captain, Senior Doug Lanner, the teams ended their seasons with two victories, one over South High, and another over our long time Hockey rival, Vocational. Next year promises to be even more successful with the many returning lettermen. HOCKEY STANDING: T. Hanlon, R. Bellanger, B. Berge, G. Johnson, M. Hegland. KNEELING: B. Mooney, M. Neuman, J. The 1968-69 Basketball team put Central back on top where we belong. The team won nine out of ten conference games to wind up with the City title. The other schools watched with open mouths as our Pioneers hit basket after basket to wipe out any dreams anyone else might have had for the Championship. Spurred on by top scorers Frank Hinkle and Larry Whitmore, the rest of the team showed real skill and contributed their talents to make Central Number One. Larry Whitmore and Frank Hinkle made us proud by making the All-City team. There is no doubt that the shooting skill and height of Billy johnson and Mike Evavold also played a big part in the terrific season Central had. The Pioneers faced St. Paul Central for the Twin City title. Their loss to the Minutemen did not dampen their spirit. Win or lose, we love you. 82 CONFERENCE GAMES Central 66 58 Roosevelt Central 63 52 South Central 84 42 Vocational Central 63 56 North Central 63 69 Henry Central 81 41 West Central 72 64 Washburn Central 74 41 Edison Central 63 59 Marshall-U Central 76 73 Southwest NON-CONFERENCE GAMES Central 73 61 Detroit Lakes Central 61 54 Fergus Falls Central 41 40 Onalaska TWIN CITY GAME Mpls. This is a part of what went on this year in the Centralian Staff room. The entire staff worked very hard to give Central students the kind of Yearbook that they want. This year the Centralian has 156 pages compared with 128 pages in 1968. With a staff short about nine kids, we have worked especially hard to give you more candid pages, better pictures, and better coverage of school life events. Mrs. Lundheims summer studies in France made this year more rewarding to all the club members. The traditional Spring Banquet climaxed a most successful year. 115 The Spanish Club is one of the most active and prosperous clubs at Central. Among the activities were the annual Fall Picnic, a soccer game against the German Club, a Christmas Party, a broomball game, the annual spring picnic, and their gala banquet, which was held at La Casa Coronado. Also, this year the Spanish Club was lucky enough to have all expenses paid by the Board of Education to see Jose Greco, the famous flamenco dancer, at Northrup Auditorium. BACK ROW: M. Coss, T.
