Today homecoming activities would officially begin. Students milled in the halls dressed in their pioneer costumes. In the afternoon students, faculty, and alumni impatiently waited to see the crowning of the 1966 Homecoming queen. The Ladies of the Court advanced and took their places. Next the five lovely princesses came on stage. After a few suspenseful moments Carl Mabonc, football captain, chose Kay Campbell to reign over all the activities. Through the fine efforts of co-chairmen Devin Kalpiers and Tom Falck and other committee members, the program was excellent. After the program Centralitcs were eager to see our football team, “Shred the Reds.” After a thrilling and hard fought battle, Ccntralites returned home to prepare for the “Autumn Haze” dance. The dance was a huge success. 'The entire student body deserves to be congratulated for participating to make this the best homecoming Central has ever had. FRONT ?OM:D. Faison, S. Moore, S. This year, under the direction of Mr. Antholz, the choir and Central singers have participated in many events which include the annual Christmas and Spring Concerts. An outstanding highlight of this year’s activities was their appearance on a local television station. The band has displayed its school spirit not only at games, but they have performed at pep-fests and other auditorium programs. Although this is his first year at Central, Mr. Antholz has made the band one of the most appreciated departments at Central. 16 ■' t a A a f W fit m 1 ' ' y i ( 1 THE CENTRAL BAND AND CHOIR FRONT ROW: D. NATIONAL HONOR 90CIETY Members of the National Honor Society maintain outstanding; scholastic records and excel in leadership, character, and service. Only ten percent of the graduating class can be admitted into the National Honor Society. This year, under the guidance of Mr. Hovey, the Honor Society sold championship football buttons, pennants, and sponsored a spaghetti dinner. The members of the Honor Society enjoyed a dinner given by the Laidlaw Legion Post. Its activities included the sale of Homecoming buttons, the sponsoring of the Homecoming dance, supervision of the Safety Council, buying and decorating Christmas trees for the front hall and lunchroom, door trimming contest, and the planning of the Sno-Daze activities. The student body is acquainted with the proceedings of the council by the reading of minutes in each homeroom. The Student Council is a very vital organization at Central High School. The junior girls doomed to defeat. The Sno-Daze festivities began with the crowning of Queen Kay Robinson and King Jimmy Robinson. Junior attendants were l.inda Olson and Calvin Boone. Attending sophomores were Linda Smith and Marcel Laursen. The night of February 2, the senior women battled thejunior girls, defeating the underclassmen in the annual broomball game 2-0. Friday, February 3, the student body attended the “Starlit Snow ” dance featuring Dave Brady and the Stars. Thanks to the decorating by Student Council members, the lunchroom was transformed into a “Winter Wonderland”. Sherry Howell, and Wendy Keller dress in finery from yesteryear for Homecoming. The Homecoming Committee was composed of students who wanted to make the 1966 Homecoming one of the most memorable and exciting events of the year. Although Homecoming was early, the committee, under the direction of Tom Falck and Devin Kalpiers, planned a colorful parade and an enjoyable program. The purpose of the Business Girls Club is to teach girls the necessary office relations. The group has visited various business establishments and gained a greater knowledge of business techniques. Another interesting project was the panel discussion given by Central graduates who are now involved in business careers. As a final event the Business Girls held a spring banquet to culminate their busy first year. Future Teachers guided by Mrs. Goodwill experienced a very active year. These students were taught the demanding role of the teacher and basic qualifications required for this profession. Through the use of movies and the interest of faculty members, this club has rapidly progressed in its first year of formation. Homecoming Committee: FRONT ROW: (I. Rcfd. I). Larson. Members of the Creative Writing Club, under the direction of Mrs. Shutts, are a group of imaginative and hard working students who have the desire to write outside of the classroom. The activities of this group included the sponsoring of a Haiku contest and the sale of carnations on Valentine's Day to finance a banquet. Chess Club members gain a greater understanding of the fundamentals of the game under the guidance of Mr. Koch. Many of these boys are underclassmen and with continued improvement will step into the shoes of the graduating seniors on the varsity. Again the prospects look encouraging. 40 CROSS COUNTRY Under the coaching of Mr. Fontaine the cross country team finished the 1966 season with a ninth place in the region. The 1966-67 Pioneer basketball team was one of the finest ever to play for Central. Led by Bob Vogel and Clifton Riley, the team won all 10 of its conference games to become City Champs. Vogel, who has started since his sophomore year is considered to be the best all-around player in the city. Averaging better then 16 points a game in conference play, he dropped below 14 {joints in only 3 games throughout the season. Riley, the city’s outstanding defensive player averaged 13.9 points per game and held George Jack-son. the city scoring leader from Henry, to ten points below his average of 22. Hustling Reggie Berry's play reached it's peak when he sparked the win over Washburn with 23 points in the district semifinals. Mark Terrcs contributed strong rebounding, outstanding free-throw shooting and good team play throughout the season. James Robinson. Central’s own representative in the Jet Set, accounted for over 11 points per game with his graceful jump shot. One of the best outside shots and steady player was Calvin Boone. Central’s tough zone defense was upset only twice throughout the year in their losses to St. Paul Central for the Twin City Championship, and to Edina in the Region finals. Alton Jenkins and Floyd Crawford were district winners and went on to the regions. The prospects look good for next year with the return of some experienced wrestlers who possess the depth and maturity to make it a number one squad. The swimming team, under Coach Elias, should be much stronger next year. These dedicated men who practice in the dawning hours of morning will lose only four seniors; Co-captain Marc Mauseth, Mike Jordan, Jim Leedham, and Tom Drogseth. There are three events in which the boys can enter; jumping, cross country, and thcslalom. Kerry Smith finished with a 9th place in the cross country event. This was the best effort of any sophomore in the city. This year the team was hampered by a lack of equipment, but Mr. Lindquist is expecting a promising season next year. A world faced with such an age. needs people with missions—missions that tend to pull together rather than tear us apart. It needs people who can see clearly! It needs people who are willing to work for a cause that they can live for and believe in. What you do in our society is proposed to you, not imposed on you. Central has tried to prepare you as best a high school can for your life in this world. Is this not the world that needs a Pioneer? Sincerely, James Treglawny Dear Students: The class of 1966-1967 can feel justly proud of its record during the past three years. In these times of great political, social, and economic turmoil, you have maintained your pose and forged ahead with dignity and a sense of purpose. May you be blessed with the ability to perceive that which is right and to follow always the paths of truth and justice. Sincerely, Donald Turkington Mr. Strauss came to Central expecting an unusually spirited school. Central fulfilled all of his expectations. Mr. Strauss is the Assistant Principal of the sophomore division. He is working for his Ph D. in Educational Administration at the University of Minnesota. Through a mutual agreement Mr. Strauss arrived at Central to gain experience in this field. He feels that Centralites adjust well to the problems of high school and that there is a great harmony between students and faculty. Academically, he feels, Central meets the needs of the community. He also believes that Central students exhibit interest in school and arc motivated to outstanding achievements.
