A Year of Action. . . And Memories. . . 5 ADMINISTRATION Mr. James Treglawny The duties of a high school principal are many and varied. Mr. Treglawny's chief responsibility is the administration of the school. He must make sure that Central runs efficiently while meeting the necessary educational requirements. This year Mr. Treglawny acquired a new job. Students have become accustomed to his voice giving the announcements over the P.A. system each morning. Despite all the demands made on him, Mr. Treglawny finds time to maintain personal contact with students. We appreciate his interest in the school and its students. Mr. Donald Turkington As assistant principal, Mr. Turkington is responsible for setting up classes and supervising the processing of schedules and report cards. Another part of his job is coping with any discipline problems that may arise. We respect him for his understanding and patience when dealing with students. What Is A Teacher? What is a Teacher? A teacher is: Someone doing his best to help you — A coach capable of instilling in his team the spirit which produces champions — Someone who's sense of humor animates the whole course for you — A person who sees through your best alibis — Someone helping you plan your future — A teacher is your friend. This year our varsity football team reclaimed the City and Twin City Championships for the second time in three years. In accomplishing this Paul Hatchett our great running halfback was placed on the All State Team, and Mike Berry, Roger Rittman, Walt Whitmore, Leroy Spears, and Dick Hatle received Honorable mentions. Chuck Elios, their outstanding coach, was named Minnesota's High School Football Coach of the Year by WCCO. From the beginning of the season it was obvious that the Central High School's football teams had the desire and potential to win. This desire and potential wos shown not only by the Varsity Team, but by the Sophomore Team as well, for they also claimed the city championship in their league. Congratulations to the determined teams and dedicated coaches for their efforts in carrying out the fine tradition Central High School has in sports. 30 Top Row: Mr. Simondet, M. Miller, R. These five runners formed the nucleus of lost falls hardworking cross-country team. Cross Country Features the Barefoot Boys This year the harriers, hampered by lack of depth, had an up-and-down season. Coached by newcomer Pete Fontaine they finished their 1965 campaign with a third place in the city A meet and a second place in the city B meet. Paced by co-captains Tony White and Kenny Moson the barefoot boys started their season slowly but progressed steadily although their outlook was dim at the beginning of the season, they surprised many people by their fine performance in the city meet. The cross country team deserves a well done from the Central High student body and we are looking forward to the next season when once more our barefoot boys will be seen running around Lake Noko-mis. toirte, Jaques Lewis, Mike Reynolds, Steve Soucy, Mike Nystul, Dove Mickelburg, Tollie Flippen, Saul Stensvoog, Steven Lorton. The fine coaching of Whi-tey Thoreson, backed by James Brislance, brought in a well-played season with 8 wins and only 2 losses. The boys were urged on to victory by the combined efforts of captains Paul Hatchett and Louis Boone. Teamwork is the key to success and the Cagers showed that a group of athletes can think and act as one. Because of Roosevelt's ineligibility, Central played in the Twin-City game, and was victorious over St. Paul Central. This was the Pioneer's 2nd Twin-City Championship this year, the first being in football.’A good season is expected next year with the return of the sophomores who tied with Southwest for the Sophomore Championship. The team captains, Pat Powers and Rick Nelson encouraged the team not to give up when the morale got low. Rick Grant, the goalie, did a tremendous job of letting only a very small percentage of the shots aimed his way get through. Tennis 1 965 Last year our tennis team, under the coaching of Mr. Whitey Thoreson, came in fourth place in the city conference, with a record of 5 wins and 5 loses. It took patience and lots of hard work but these boys came through. This year's team will have letterman Paul Sulzbach, Daryl Angrimson, and Duane Anderson returning to form a strong nucleus for this year's tennis team. With a few more tennis players from the ranks of the student body they could go on to better their record of last year. Daryl Angrimson serving. Creative Writing, Chess, and Great Books Clubs Mr Hovey raises a provocative question during a Greot Books discussion Members of the Great Books Club have become acquainted with the books and ideas of many writers, both classical and contemporary. After selecting a book, the students spend two or three weeks reading it, then, under the direction of Mr. Hovey, they discuss whot they have read. Mr. Hovey stated, The Great Books Discussion Group is made up of students who take time to think about the deeper issues in life. Among the books read this year are And Quiet Flows the Don, Much Ado About Nothing, The Bad Seed, and The Prince. The Chess Club meets every Monday afternoon, giving members a chance to play chess and pick up pointers to improve their game. Last fall a ladder was set up, with every member having 1500 points. During competition through the year, points were won for each victory, forfeited for each defeat. Mr. Koch, club advisor, stated that the ladder not only stimulated competition, but encouraged games between players of similar ability. Interest in chess is not confined to the club meetings. Two students hunched over a miniature chess board has become a common sight in homerooms, halls, classes, and the lunchroom. Bruce Whitebouse and Tom Benson bottle for points. 64 Encourage Development of Special Interests The Creative Writing Club is a group of students who are interested in writing outside of the classroom. The club has informal monthly meetings, when members read any type of original effort. The group discusses what has been read, and often offers suggestions for improvement. This year the club sponsored their second annual Haiku Contest. The Haiku is a form for short poems, invented by the Japanese. Interest of the student body wos shown by the large number of poems submitted and the high quality of many of them. The Creative Writing Club also had a Christmas party and a spring banquet. As one of twelve Reporters to the Notion , chosen from four million 4H'ers, she spent eight days telling the 4-H story to national leaders and businessmen. While in Washington, Elizabeth had a chance to meet and talk with Orville Freeman, Secretary of Agriculture and a former Governor of Minnesota. The most stimulating time of my life, were the words Dick Hatle used to describe his week at Boy's State. Dick and Scott Hennessey were Centrals' representatives at this activity last June, while Ann Marie Anderson went to Girls' State. The purpose of this week sponsored by the American Legion, was to give high school students a working knowledge of local government. This was accomplished by having students set up their own government and hold elections on a city, county, and state level. The delegates also heard speeches by local political figures. Ann Marie said, It was the first time that government has come alive to Orville Freeman, a former Central graduate, introduces Elizabeth Covington to the President. Trod School Central has a rich and wonderful heritage which it freely gives its students. What is our inheritance? We have a legacy of pride in our school, for it is both a beautiful building and a fine educational institution. We have behind us the traditions built up by all the students who have gone here before us. Another part of our heritage has been the gift of outstand- ing teachers, who are dynamic in the classroom, inspiring us to do the very best we can. They are also interested in us as people, and their guidance has helped us through our years here. Now, as we are ready to leave Central, we realize how much our school and its legacy have enriched us. As we go into the world, we will carry our heritage with us.
