1966 Centr TABLE OF CONTENTS Faculty .......................... 5 Seniors ......................... 10 Undergraduates .................. 34 Athletics ....................... 44 Organizations ................... 60 School Life ..................... 76 CENTRAL HISH SCHOOL MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA dedication A friend is a person with whom I may be sincere. Before him I may think aloud. Ralph Waldo Emerson ■ At Central we ore fortunate to have many fine teachers on the faculty, but there is one in particular whom we would like to honor this year. You may know him os a teacher in the classroom, a coach on the field, or perhaps just as a friend, but whatever the association he has been an inspiration to all. Along with his energetic personality, he has an exceptionally fine sense of humor which immediately puts us at ease. He is a person in whom we can confide without difficulty and with the assurance that he will help us in every way possible. Because of all you have done for us we dedicate this 1965 Centralian to you, Doynor Weis. 4 THE CLASS OF 1965. Happiness in the classroom is not a forgotten art at Central High School. Now, as this yearbook is being issued, is a good time to point out that significant thoughts and the people who think them are responsible for the world as it is today and as it will be in the future. Your years at Central hove been designed to open up your mind, to present new ideas and to help you become a thinking person. Think deeply about serious matters. Think constructively about problems. Think highly about your ideals. Think well of your school — it is a reflection of yourself. MR. JAMES TREGLAWNY, Principol MR DONALD TURKINGTON, Assistant Principal MRS. In their past twenty games they have suffered only one defeat. This squad placed four men on the All-City Team: Captain Harold Boudreaux, Jim Clark, Glen Nevils and Don Buckmier. Glen Nevils was the city's leading scorer, broke the all-time Central scoring record with 109 points, was selected as the most outstanding back of the year, and was honored by his teammates as the most valuable player on the team. After losing most of the regulars from the 1963 championship team, these boys carried on our winning tradition. The Sophomore Football Team also deserves congratulations for winning the City Sophomore Championship. We hope these boys will continue to improve and that they will contribute to next yeor's varsity squad. THE FOOTBALL COACHING STAFF. Front Row: Mr Simondol, Mr. Anderson. Great team effort paid off for them in the titles they won: the Twin City Indoor, the Carlton Invitational, the City Championship, ond the State Championship. Their only loss was the Minneapolis Relays by one point. New school records were set in the 880 ond 440 relays, the one, two and four mile relays, the one mile medley relay, the 400 yd. low hurdle shuttle relay, the pole vault, the 440 yd. dash, and the one mile run. The only disappointment is that with nearly an all senior team, there were only five lettermen returning for the 1965 team. Track continues to be a big sport at Central deserving the enthusiasm of the whole school. 57 Glen Nevils in the relay. athletics G.A.A. CABINET. Front Row: S. Bellonger, President; P. ORGANIZATIONS RAND AND aror The band and choir, directed by Mr. Webster, have added a great deal to our school programs. The assistance of the band at pep fests and sports events has helped to promote school spirit. The choir has entertained ot special assemblies such os Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and other holidays. Of course, there is the everyday entertainment on the fourth floor. First hour the combined sounds of drums, saxophones, clarinets, flutes and all the other instruments that make up the band con be heard. The voices of the choir in rehearsal add a special something to third hour. As a major attraction the band and choir present the Spring Concert. This annual event features the band and choir in a variety of numbers performed for our enjoyment. With Mr. Webster's instructions our band and choir have done an outstanding job. Several special events highlight the year, but even the average day at Central is filled with action. Club meetings, pep fests, classes, and people just talking and rushing down the halls make the day to day happenings part of an exciting school year. Central High it proud of the enthusiasm and pep of its cheerleaders. Besides leading our school in cheering for our teams, thoy help to arouse the school spirit tn all of us. Corol Severson shows the determination to fight for victory. The 1965 Centrolian Staff hos been in a busy turmoil trying to meet their deadlines. Here ore some members of the staff writing copy, checking layouts and doing other little jobs that are time-consuming but enjoyable. The senior staff, headed by Jim Knudsen. is being assisted by three juniors, Doreen Erickson, Don Clausen, ond Joyce Pedersen. 78 Last summer Central sent three representatives to Girls' and Bays' State. They were John Stensvoog, Rita Johnson, and Jon Todd. They were omong thousands of students participating in this Americon Legion sponsored octivity. The purpose of Girls' and Boys' State is to give the students a real knowledge of state government ond teach them the political method of organization. The students organized political parties and held elections for state offices. Jon wos County Clerk of Court, Rita was alderwoman, ond John was the County Attorney. They olso participated in athletics and went to many social events. They all agreed that it was a lot of fun ond o valuable experience in learning. For the post years the band has contributed a great deal to our school. Their presence at the Pep Fests ond othletic events has been instrumental In building and maintaining school spirit. This year, through the efforts of Mr. Webster, the band hos shown an exceptional amount of obility and enthusiasm Our foreign exchange student this year is Bryndis Jonsdottir from Iceland. Mrs. Mattson with the help of Bryndis prepared a luncheon consisting of typical Icelandic foods. This was fun for Central's students as well as for Bryndis. Bryndis wore her native costume ond spoke her native language with Mr. Val Bjornson, State Treasurer. We hope we hove made Bryndis feel at home in o strange country. 79 QUEEN BARBARA The festivities began on Thursday with an exciting program directed by Martin Bowman, a 1964 graduate. Today, October 16, 1964, the climax was reached when Harold Boudreaux and Paul Berge held the glittering crown over the head of Barbara Johnson and proclaimed her the Queen of the 1964 Homecoming. W 2T by tw-cwy ckctSG On the night of Thursday, March 4, at 8.00 P.M. the curtain rose on the Senior Class Play, Harvey . The production featured fine performances by the actors, good costuming, and a simultaneous stage setting. This three act comedy told the story of a man, Elwood P. Dowd, who was at peace with the world, and who was sincerely interested in everyone he happened to meet. Elwood Dowd was very happy because he had a friend. His best friend was a six foot tall rabbit named Harvey. Then there was Elwood's sister. Veto, who was trying to launch her rather plain daughter into society. She didn't like Harvey. Vela went to get Elwood committed to a sanitarium where she encountered quite a set of circumstances. The story that followed showed the thoughts of several interesting characters, revealed the humorous os well as serious aspects of the ploy, and made for a very enjoyable evening. Top Honors is limited to no more than five percent of the graduating seniors. This year there are twelve seniors receiving this recognition. Because of their high averages. they are also eligible for the Honors diplomo. The extra requirement tor receiving the Honors diploma is that these students must not only maintoin a high average but also take extra subjects. Therefore their grade point average is a few points lower than Top Honors. Congratulations to this hard working group of scholars. HONORS. Seated: G. Arntien. N Foll.ngitod, J. Knudsen.
