I do not shrink from this responsibility—I welcome it. I do not believe that any of us would exchange places with any other people or any other generation. The energy, the faith, the devotion which we bring to this endeavor will light our country and all who serve it—and the glow from that fire can truly light the world.” John Fitzgerald Kennedy 1917-1963 We of the class of 1964 have seen the opening of the new frontier, an era which may well be one of the most exciting and rewarding in man’s history. As we stand at the thresh-hold of a new life, a tremendous challenge faces our generation. From the beginning of time, men have sought universal understanding, freedom, and peace and the torch has now been passed to us. The courage and dedication required of our generation has been reflected this year on the athletic field as well as in the classroom. It is essential that we now transfer our efforts to the larger, yet similar, task before us. We realize that each one of us, as an individual, must strive to “truly light the world.” For this reason, we dedicate the 1964 Centralian to the student body and to the attainment of these goals. acuity At Central we have been given the opportunity for greater learning. Our faculty has striven to teach us to reason. There is more to being a teacher than just correcting test papers. Each teacher must be a counselor to his or her particular students. We at Central are fortunate to have such learned “sources of wisdom.” s the 1964 school year draws to a close, it seems appropriate to recall that fifty classes have graduated from the stage of Central High School since the dedication of this building and. of course, many more from old Central before that. For each class and each student, as for you, the school has meant special considerations, special opportunities, special values. With the complexity and diversity of modern life today. Central, more than ever before, has special meanings for its students. Wherever you go, whatever you do, be worthy of Central! Your efforts have contributed to its accomplishments, your support will contribute to its future. James Treglawny, Principal Permit me to join your parents and friends in wishing you success and happiness in the years to come. As a class you have acquitted yourself well; you are serious and well-intentioned; and you have been a good class with which to work. As an individual you will need many things, not the least of which is a sharpened intellect. We feel that you are prepared to meet the competition of an interesting but difficult world. The best of everything to all of you. Donald Turkington, Assistant Principal 6 Mrs. Joyce T. Jackson Miss Clara M. Anderson Sophomore Counselor Senior Counselor Mr. John P. Mr. Westerman! eniops Our senior year has come to an end. For many this means the parting of close friends. We will miss the last minute studying for finals, the teachers who became our friends, and all the fun we had. Still, our second life must begin. We will meet friends either in college or in the business world, but we will never forget our years at Central. Zozy Terzidou from Greece is cur foreign exchange student at Central this year. The changes to American ways have been many. In American schools, for instance, teachers and students have a closer relationship, there are fewer subjects, and there are more extracurricular activities. Zozy enjoys America and Central High School very much She often said, “I wish I could stay longer!” We wish she could, too. Carley Bjugan and her parents are Zozy’s American family. 34 Andrea Duffy was our A.F.S. student this year. During the summer of .1963 she spent three months abroad. Six weeks of this was spent in Turkey. While there, she stayed with a Turkish family which included one brother and a sister. During her stay Andi attended an international fair which was almost like are fairs except it included a market place where people sold many different kinds of things. Andi had to adjust to a warmer climate and a diet of many vegetables and little meat. A typical breakfast consisted of tea, cheese, and olives. Andrea enjoyed her stay in Turkey and said. I would like to return again. Andi and Zozy ride in the Homecoming Parade. Coach Elias characterized the 1963 Central Pioneers as a team of “courage, desire, dedication and sacrifice. With these qualities the Pioneers defeated seven city opponents and St. Paul Humboldt. A team marked by pride, the Pioneers began their season with high hopes and justified them. The same team in one year, tied the City defensive record, yielding only six points, and came within twenty points of the offensive scoring record. They were noted for the “fastest line and backfield in the city.” Butch Davis was the leading scorer in the City with seventy-two points. Dan Kirk. Also at Christmas time, the members work together as a group to sell Christmas corsages. fRench cLub J. Tsuchimochi, C. Nevils, B. Bowman, M. Gess. J. Knutson, S. Eckert, J. Solberg, K. Farber, S. It also helps to acquaint the German student with the culture, custom, and traditions of Germans through films and pictures of Germany and through talks by travelers and native Germans. This organization, advised by Mr. Strukel. was the first of its kind in the Twin Cities. Its membership consists of a representative from each homeroom who must maintain a “C average, be licensed drivers, and be careful drivers. The council (I) requires a school sticker for identification (2) requires registration of vehicles (3) encourages student drivers’ observance of traffic laws (4) reports violations of school or city traffic laws 5) keeps records of such violations. Its purpose, as stated in the council’s constitution, is to create an awareness of the need for safe driving by promoting safe driving habits and attitudes which results in the improvement of teenage driving records. 87 hi-y The purpose of the Hi-Y Club is to create, maintain, and extend, throughout the home, school and community, high standards of Christian character. R6d CROSS The Central High School Chapter of the American Red Cross offers an excellent opportunity for young people to be of help to others — both in the United States and in other countries. They are greatly responsible for spreading cheer and friendship to many needy people. Much care goes into the assembling of the Christmas gift boxes which are filled and then sent to children in other lands. An annual membership drive is held by the Red Cross and the contributions are given to the Red Cross Fund which meets emergencies and disasters that may arise both here and abroad. At the end of the school year, a banquet is held for many of the Red Cross members of various schools. Banking Thrift is a habit that will pay dividends for the rest of your life. To instill the habit, we have established Tuesday as Bank Day. The students who are banking representatives at Central have a job of responsibility. They are in charge of the banking records and it is their job to see that the money reaches the room of Mr. Schmidt before eight-thirty on Tuesday mornings. The money is then picked up by the Farmers and Mechanics Bank and is deposited to the account of the Central student. In appreciation, the banking representatives are honored each year at a city-wide banquet Bottom Row: K. Tweed. D. Johnson. J. Peterson. R. Packer. P. Marin. Mr. Schmidt. Row 2: P. Hedstrom. L.
