■ As this school years passes into history and new students come to fill the vacant rooms; we, the Class of 1962, look out into the world — a world which promises us a bright future. Leaving these halls for the outside, a twinge of sadness touches our hearts for we are leaving behind a part of ourselves. So, to the classes to come, we issue the challenge to cherish the past and make the future even brighter. Dear Red and Blue we’ll sing to you Our Song of loyally. And follow you, dear Red and Blue, With faith to victory! And when in danger of the foe, You'll fi„d us launch and true. With all our might we’ll fight! fighl, ghl, Fof Red anJ B u I Z96I upijPjiim'j Contents DEDICATION.......Page 4 FACULTY .........Page 5 SENIORS .........Page 13 UNDERGRADS ......Page 34 ORGANIZATIONS Page 40 SPORTS...........Page 60 FEATURES ........Page 77 BABY PICTURES Page 91 SENIOR DIRECTORY Page 93 CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL MINNEAPOLIS MINNESOTA 3 Dedication LORIS TIIORESOH We will always remember him as a quiet man with a great personal magnetism. He inspires students to newer heights, both academically and athletically. He puts his students at ease with little jokes, helpful hints, and gentle teasing. Whitcy” draws students and teachers alike with his quiet dignity and spirited personality. We respect and honor him for he works for us in the classroom and on the athletic field. In his classes we see a teacher great in personality and creativeness. Outside the classroom we find that he is a friend who smiles as he passes us in the halls and helps with our problems. We appreciate his interest in us as individuals, and his work in benefiting Central and all its students. In the years to come we will always remember Whitcy’' as a wonderful friend of the athletes on his team as well as the students in his classes. This year these students sold candy and steak knives, and held two dances to help finance their biennial trip to Washington D.G, Williamsburg, ind other historic places in that area. It raises money by selling holly, mistletoe, and oblaten at Christmas time. Also, at Christmas time the German Students brighten our school by singing German carols through the halls. The club started off the second semester with a dance which was enthusias- tically accepted by the members of Central High School. Happy memories still echo in the minds of those who were present that fun-packed day when they had their annual spring picnic. German foods and fun were emphasized, and there was plenty of both. Badminton is played in the fall, and continued through the winter. Tennis and Golf are played in the spring. Fads During these past years there have been many styles at Central, but, we have had some of the cutest. Our skirts were short and swingy and more often pleated or flared than slim. We brought back an old 1940 style, changed it to fit our needs and culottes became very popular. Our sweaters were all colors but they had to be bulky and long. Pointed-toed and squared-toed shoes in black, brown, and red were the favorites while many girls went collegiate by wearing Italian loafers and wool socks. To match our shoes we bought Roger Van S. and Saber purses in the same colors. On cooler days we carried our shoes in Oval Room Boxes and we wore furry hats in all colors to keep our heads warm. The once popular gold pins and necklaces took second place to the new gleaming silver styles. Our boys were just as fussy about their clothes. They wore smooth fitting continental pants with legs that were a good inch from the top of their revised 1940 style wing-tip, wing-back shoe with the very shiny toe. Wool ponchoes of bright plaids and stripes were worn over shirts as jackets or just for looks. Gant shirts with the loop in the back and the wide pleat that went all the way down the back were the shirts that the best-dressed boys wore. European style hats also kept the boys in style as well as warm. Many variations of these basic styles were worn by the different classes, but on the whole most of the Ccntralitcs were very well-dressed throughout the whole year. Girls and Boys State ... Steve. Paulette In the spring of 1961 Paulette Merrill, Steve Dingfelder, , and Orvin Staupe were selected as Central’s representatives for Girls and Boys State. This is held each year on the , State Fair Grounds and the University of Minnesota Agricultural School campus. During their stay they met students from other schools throughout Minnesota, and at the same time learned more about our state and national governments. This proved to be an enjoyable experience, and one they will always remember. Maria, Mark, Karen American Field Service The two American Field Service representatives from Central were Karen Greiling and Mark Peterson. Mark lived with the governor’s family in the Phillippines. Karen spent the summer in Chile, staying in various homes. Maria Ricalde came to us from the Phillippines and lived at the home of our Central junior, Joan Gilbertson. Maria has been a friend to everyone and we will surely miss her bright smile when she leaves. One day in December, through the cooperation of Mrs. Mattson, our lunchroom manager, and Maria, a special meal was served for noon lunch featuring Philippine foods. Mrs. Gilbertson, Maria’s American mother” was also present that day. M uiS -W 92 UOS9iO{fX ‘- JV SENIOR DIRECTORY ALLEN, MADELINE 2832 Portland Avenue South Ta 4-1955 ANDERSON.
