e coin v — 3 ! WJI tt il i ui illi) r A. °QoaincP CENTRAL1AN 1961 The memory of Central High School will remain in our hearts and minds for years to come. Through the teaching and counseling of our faculty, we have received knowledge, skills, standards and principles that we believe will stay with us throughout our lives. Many hours were spent in toil and study, but in contrast there were an unaccountable number of joyous, exciting, yet profitable experiences. With these things in view, we the Centennial Class of 1961, challenge those who will continue to walk these halls, to make the best of their opportunities and keep the name Central High School high and mighty for the next hundred years in the eyes of those looking on from the outside. 33Sw Dear Red and Blue we’ll sing to you Our Song of loyalty. And follow you, dear Red and Blue, With faith to victory! And when in danger of the foe, You’ll find us staunch and true. With all our might we ll fight! fight! fight! For Red and Blue. CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL, Minneapolis, Minnesota MRS. MARGUERITE OISON 9 DEDICATION ' { rtXZ r Buenos dias a todos! These are familiar words in the classroom of Mrs. Marguerite Olson, a Spanish instructor at Central. Surely, in the hearts of the many who know her, there is a deep and growing appreciation of her patience and understanding. Her wise judgments and sound advice have helped many to find themselves and their goals in life. As a proof of our love and gratitude, we the class of 1961 do dedicate this Centralian to Mrs. Marguerite Olson. MHC if- 74,97 7k bW ' mi RAYMOND C. HOVEY To some of us it was in the physics laboratory— to others just a casual acquaintance in the halls, but to everyone — students and faculty alike — the character of Mr. Raymond Hovey, physics instructor at Central denotes a friend who will linger in our thought and memories forever. We treasure the patient and careful guidance which this man has given us. We will always remember him as a quiet person, yet full of understanding and wise discernment, ready and able to help and advise whenever he may. It is because of these qualifies and many more that we the class of 1961, dedicate this Centralian to Mr. Hovey. L QaJL ) 'b 4 JAMES TREGLAWNY DONALD TURKINGTON Principol Assistant Principal . . . I OFFICERS I believe in character as the foundation of life, and in scholarship as a means to achievement; in leadership as an aid to progress; in service as the object and end I of living.” , There are four qualifications for membership in the National Honor Society — good character, scholarship, leadership, and service. The members try to provide scholastic leadership and service to Central. The year has been very busy with the selling of candy to defray the expenses of a trip to Chicago. Two dances were held which were the Turkey Whirl and the Madcap Capers. The annual party for honor sophomores was given in March. To climax the year, the Honor Society held the formal induction and reception for parents and friends. Since the four candidates from our school are all German students, there was naturally an interest in raising money for their benefit. Attention was also centered on the singing of German songs and folk dancing, with the polka as the favorite. Meetings were highlighted by pictures of foreign lands and travel talks to broaden our knowledge of the folk ways and customs of other people. The traditional spring picnic “bei dem schonen Zeder See” (Cedar Lake) emphasized German foods and proved again the Gemutlichkeit” so typical of the group. Bottom row: Hoffmon, M. These are familiar words in the halls during the Christmas Season. Every year, the French Club sells corsages to raise money for their club activities. The three year old club, under the supervision of Mrs. Mary Stewart, has had a very successful year and is looking forward to next year. Hail Caesar! The Latin Club, a newly organized club of two years, is fast becoming an active club at Central. This year the highlight of the Latin Club was their Winter Sports Party held at Lake Nokomis on the Eve of Thanksgiving. The Latin Club is becoming an important club at Central. Bottom rowi S. RED CROSS BANKING Red Cross, under the guidance of Miss Walter and Sharon Peterson, has been a very active group at Central. This group is made up of students who are interested in working in a service organization. The Red Cross sponsors dances, and uses the proceeds for children overseas, and they prepared an all-school assembly to put across our annual drive for funds. These funds are given to Red Cross activities locally and internationally. Through this worthwhile organization. Central has been able to help children and other people all over the world. Under the able supervision of Miss Zanger, the banking representatives from each homeroom help to promote the practice of saving. These cashiers, with the assistance of their teachers, take care of the banking for their advisories. They volunteer their services to help us save for the future. BOTTOM ROW. Butch Miller broke three short distance records by running the 60 yard dash in :06.3, the 100 yard dash in :09.7, and the 220 yard dash in :21.6, and established himself as one of the greatest sprinters in the history of Minnesota. Carl Jones also made a place for himself in Central's Hall of Fame by setting a new record for the 880 yard run. This new record is 1:59.9. The records of the high and low hurdle shuttle relays were also broken. Lonnie Ellis, John Ford, Wendell Gilchrist, and Louie Moore combined their efforts to run the 400 yard low hurdle shuttle relay in :46.3, and the 280 yard high hurdle shuttle relay in :36.7. The record of 1:31.2 for the 880 yard relay was tied by our state champion relay team of Butch Miller, Bob Chatham, Phil Micheau, and Delroy Calhoun. While spending a week with representatives from schools all over the state, they not only had a good time; but they learned, by experience, how our local and national governments operate. One of the Foreign Field Service students for the year 1960, was Central's Karen Anderson. Karen who was chosen by Central and also by the New York board, spent two wonderful months in Turkey. Franco Vicino, our American Field Service representative from Milan, Italy, is a well known figure in the halls of Central High School.
