4 CENTRALIAN 1960 w r- ......... 2 Centralian I960 3 CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL Minneapolis, Minnesota 4 CAROLINE K. BARRON Principal DONALD D. BEV1S, Counselor DEDICATION TO OUR PRINCIPAL. MISS BARRON, WHOM WE ADMIRE, RESPECT, AND JUST PLAIN LIKE. Let us tell you a little about her. 1. She has a natural regard for students as individuals, and doesn't expect all to fit a set patttern. 2. She is tolerant of mistakes which are a part of learning and experience, yet distinguishes between tolerance and softness. 3. She is a principal of “one more chance,” as those students who have been forgiven seventy times seven can testify. 4. She understands students of all ages. Our chronological age may cover three years, but our emotional and intellectual range is much wider. Miss Barron's experience as an elementary, junior high school, and senior high school principal has equipped her with unusual awareness of the actual age level of each student. 5. She serves as a shock absorber for the school and community. Tensions may run high, but Miss Barron's calmness and sense of humor have averted many a minor explosion. TO YOU. It is the core of almost all school activities, and is responsible for student management of lunchroom, halls, and parking lot. Under the supervision of Mr. Wiesner, the members have sponsored many worthwhile projects this past year, and have helped set the tone for serious activity on the part of most students. Central's Honor Society members this year have set standards which they hope will be observed by many groups in years to come. Maintaining ideals of character, scholarship, leadership, and service are the objectives and goals of this organization. These arc exercised through an untold number of school and community activities. The society offered assistance to faculty members by supervising classes in emergency situations. The most significant accomplishments of this club were the examples of leadership and service set by individual members in the name of the National Honor Society. The highlight of the year’s activities was the biannual trip to Washington. D. C.; Monticcllo, Richmond, and Williamsburg, Virginia. The members raised money for this trip through innumerable candy selling parties; two dances - the Turkey Twirl and Rhapsody in Pink; and other money-raising projects. The Honor Society also sponsored a party rewarding all honor roll sophomores. Other activities were the formal spring induction, and the final banquet which recaptured the events of the year. SPANISH CLUB The members of El Club Espanol demonstrate with energy and enthusiasm their interest in Spanish and the Spanish speaking countries. They concentrate particularly on Mexico, Central and South America since understanding of these countries is so essential to the unity of the New World. A great variety of projects occupy the club’s out-of-class hours, one of the aims being raising money for the summer Caravan to Mexico. They sell Christmas cards and stationery, wash cars, sponsor paper sales, put on dances. In addition to the money-raising events, they contribute their share to other school activities, such as the American Field Service. From time to time Spanish visitors appear to give demonstrations of Spanish dress, customs, and language. These programs are made available to all Centralitcs. Bottom row: D. Gorncy, P. Russ. S. LATIN CLUB “We the members of the Central High School Latin Club in order to familiarize ourselves with the customs, habits, history, and literature of the Romans do ordain and establish this constitution on October 26, 1959.” Thus began the newely founded Latin Club, the main activity of which was the successful sponsoring of “Saturnalia,” a winter festival. CREATIVE WRITING CLUB This year the Creative Writing Club re-established an old tradition; the publication of the “Quest.” This literary magazine contains poems, short stories, and essays written by Central students. As a service project the club also publicized the various essay contests recommended for student participation. Through these projects and informal monthly meetings, the members try to gain helpful fundamentals in the art of creative writing. Bottom row: G. Davis, SECRETARY; J. McBeath. MIMES AND MUMMERS Always willing to assist in the reading of interpretative scripts and in organizing skits, the school dramatic club has given memorable service to the school. This year’s main activity was the production of a full length play from which all members benefited in experience. The new faculty advisor this year was Mr. Spies. NATIONAL FORENSIC LEAGUE Although small, our school speech society has shown its impressive activity throughout the year. The debate squad left a trail of defeated opponents in invitational, city, district, regional, and state contests. This club renewed another old tradition at Central — the annual Warren Debate, thus giving the school an insight into the current labor problems. Membership is earned through participation in debate, student congresses, declamations, original and memorized orations, and extemporaneous speeches. Bottom row: K. Becker. Marie Peterson, G. All of these monitors must be self-disciplined and responsible. 51 CLERICAL AND OFFICE AIDS How much easier it is to take an exam when it ha been typed and dittoed neatly. Hi-Y is a service organization interested in the welfare of others. It has operated the concession stands during the football season, contributed to World Service and Community Chest, sold Christmas trees on V’s Mens lots, and helped in the various fund raising campaigns. Socially it holds several joint meetings with city-wide Triettes groups. CHESS CLUB The student trend towards more serious activity is exemplified by the formation of a Chess Club. Those appearing here can be held responsible for this action. The band participated in the usual athletic events this year, acting as a marching unit at Homecoming. Their traditional potluck supper and parents’ meeting was held in the fall. The highlight of the season was the annual winter concert, which was presented on March 10. CHOIR We can be truly proud of this organization and its contributions to life at Central. The choir performed for the student body at Christmastime and also presented a Christmas concert of the finest quality. Participation in the All City Choir Festival which took place in February was another thrilling experience for the members. In May, on Friday the 13th, the choir’s annual spring concert was given combined with a reunion of choir members from years back. Car washes and the sale of poinsettas at Christ- mas were the major projects used by the choir this year to raise funds for new choir robes. Their hard work was duly rewarded, however, when the robes finally arrived. This was possible only through the contributions of the school, its organizations. and the work of past choir members. The choir, which takes great pride in its new garb, wishes to express its deep appreciation to all contributors. Color in garment and song will hereafter fill each performance. Bottom row: J. CENTRALIAN PROGRAM The annual Centralian program was held this year on Feb. 24. Just as our yearbook was changed this year, so also was the program different. First came the introduction of the staff to the student body. This was done in a unique and humorous fashion. The major part of the program consisted of slides taken around school by Mr. Hovcy. This was done for a purpose— to arouse memories of past activities at Central and influence students to order a Centralian. The result of this presentation was subscriptions for the yearbook, which of course, are essential to its production. This was, also, a climax for the staff since their goal is to satisfy the subscribers. Feature Editor? 67 Our Honor Society??!? SNO-WEEK The team was in a huddle . . . With this cap. I crown thee Feet in action SNO-WEEK King Gari Chemyl reigned over the third Sno-Wcck in Central’s history us Uler, the Norse god of winter. Attending King Gari from the junior class were Myma Rixman and Elmer Rosenberg; Sophomore were Carol Oberg and Mike McGray. This year a central theme of Scandinavian folklore was carried out. Even the Goths were present to demand warm weather and to smear burnt cork on girls’ faces. A more abundant presence of snow this year made the week’s festivities even more exciting. There was a snow-man out front, a broom-hockey game, skating parties, varsity games, and the grand finale dance in Valhalla on Friday night. I prophsesy LANGUAGE CLUB DANCE Language Clubs at Central attended one of the most unique dances of this year. It was given by the German Club. Entertainment for the evening consisted of a play put on by members of the Latin Club, a Spanish Dance, and a German Polka exhibition. Highlighting the activities was the square-dancing which was called by “Uncle Luke.” This was a new experience for many Centralites and was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. PRIDE and PREJUDICE A fine director, a fine cast, and a fine performance describes the 1960 Senior Class Play. The popular comedy “Pride and Pcrjudice”, by Jane Austen, was presented on the nights of March 22 and March 23 in the school auditorium. The Bennett family had five daughters. Dear Mother Bennett was determined to find a husband for each of them. After many hiliarious incidents the play ended with the partial success of Mrs. Bennett-three married daughters. The play was under the very capable direction of Mrs. Mary Stewart. CAST Mr. Bennett . SIGURDS GRAUDS Mrs. Bennett .. GLORIA DAVIS Jane .. CHARLOTTE REFFERT Elizabeth ..... These pictures were a sneak preview of our senior activities which took place too late in the spring to take actual photographs. Coke-tails before the Prom, the Senior Banquet, and the Senior Class Party were only a few of the fun-filled times that we had together as a class. The Prom, which was held on Friday, May 13, at the Lafayette A-PEEK Club, had as it’s theme - “Stardust”. “When You Wish Upon a Star” supplied the atmosphere for the Senior Banquet, held at the beautiful Dayton’s Skyroom on Wednesday, May 25. Senior Centralitcs came up with varied costumes for the Senior Class Party when they portrayed “The World’s Fair” on April 22. 73 WARREN DEBATE “Resolved: That the Federal Government Should Substantially Increase its Regulation of Labor Unions.” This was the topic of the Warren Debate held this spring. On November 22, 1918, George H. Warren established at Central the Frank Merton Warren Prize Debate Fund in memory of his son, a former student. Since that time the fund has provided money awards to the participants of the Warren Debate, which was held this year for the first time since 1955. The affirmative team, JoAnn Krebs and Honey Rovick, tried to prove the need for more government regulation of labor unions, and show how their plan would best fit that need. The negative team, composed of Sally Burh-man and Jerry McBcath, tried to disprove the need established by the affirmative and show the impracticability of the affirmative plan. Mr. Carl W. Anderson, Principal of Wash-bum High School, served as judge. The debate was won by the negative team. 75 Schloer-44 Biehoffer-35 Cline-27 Hilstrom-25 Goodmanson-32 Rozenburg-59 Elias-Coach Bowman-Ass’t. Coach FOOTBALL . . . This year Centrals’ football team had a 5-1-1 record, losing a tough game to Washburn, Twin City Champions. This record is the best for a Central team since 1955 when the team only lost a game. The teams defense was the best in the city, holding all opponents to a four and a half point average per game. In the last five games Central allowed only fourteen points, an average of less than three points per game. The offense was equally as striking in the scoring of an average of fifteen points per game. Co-captains Duane Marcus, guard and linebacker, and Kenny Schloer, fullback and linebacker, led their team to the second place berth in the city standings. This year’s squad, the largest in Central’s history, was led by captain Gary Bergum who broke our previous record in the 1.8 mile run. Others in the top nine were Dave Jacobson, Bill Carlson, Carl Jones, Lyle Lasley, Steve Pedersen, Tom Tepper, John Jacobson, and Harold Jackson. Ten boys, mostly juniors, stayed out for skiing in an almost snowless year. Of the six city meets in which the team competed, it tied four and lost two, even though no entries were made in the jumping events. The squad finished sixth in the city out of ten schools. Four boys were sent to the state ski meet at Duluth: Jim Bristol and Mark Smith in slalom, and George Snell and Don May in cross-country. The disadvantages of lack of snow and inadequate equipment were offset by the willingness and desire of the boys to learn how to ski and compete in this winter sport. WRESTLING The Central Matmen finished the season with one win and seven losses. Outstanding wrestlers in the eight meets of the year were Elmer Rozcnberg and Dick Drugge, who finished the season with records of 4 (wins) - 3 (losses) - 1 (tie) and 5-2-1 respectively. SWIMMING This year’s swimming team did not do too well, winning only one of its twelve meets. Bill Carlson, captain of the team, brought Central a fifth place in the 100 yard freestyle, being the only person from Central that placed in city. The team has few seniors and many juniors, so it is expected to do well next year. TENNIS Central’s netmen are expected to do very well in city competition with two excellent singles players returning from last year. Steve Danylyszyn and Bob Bendisky. If things turn out right this year we should take city championship. In the fall competition for State championship Steve Danylyszyn brought Central a fourth place to pace the Pioneers, and Bob Bendisky also went to State but did not place. The 1959 track team had an extremely successful record, taking first place in the following tournaments: Carleton Invitational, city relays, sophomore city, and state championship. Individuals who excelled in the state meet last year were: Butch Miller who won first place in the 100 and 220 yafd dashes; Clarence Burton who placed first in the shot-put; the relay team of Butch Miller, Morris Williams, Mike Kranz, and Hans Sandbo who took the first place and also set a new record; Morris Williams with the second place in the 440 yard dash; Wendell Gilchrist with second place in the high jump; and Eugene Frazier who took second in the broad jump. These totaled 30'A points as compared to the score of 12 for our nearest competitor. The 1960 track team is also looking forward to a successful season. Gary Bcrgum, Dennis Gallery, Richard Calhoun.
