Mr. William G. Hawker, Assistant Principal To the Members of the 1956 Graduating Class: As the lilacs shed their blooms and the peonies spread their petals to the soft June air, a ■very happy chapter ends for you seniors. Your thoughts then turn to more mature things— careers, jobs and college. Gone forever are the carefree, happy days of high school. Responsibilities and worries can never again be shrugged aside, but must be shouldered. I have great confidence in the class of 1956, and I am proud to be associated with such a fine group of young people who, I am sure, will stand firmly for the finer things in life. W. G. Hawker Mr. Edward Nagel Many students have not had the occasion to have a friendly talk with one of our counselors. The counselors' job is to help and advise the student in making out his school program so that the individual will benefit from his high school education Miss Clare Bell as much as possible. Later, when the seniors begin to wonder about going to college or getting a job, either of these two helpful people will sit down and discuss the problem with the student in order to find the best solution. 9

Miss Caroline K. Barron Dear Pioneers of 1956: A hundred years ago when Minneapolis was born, pioneering, though a difficult business, was comparatively simple. Carving a village out of the wilderness required strong men and women armed with courage and faith. The village has become a beautiful thriving city but the pioneering is not done. The new frontiers are scientific and social. In automation, in aeronautics, in atomic energy—in every conceivable field of human endeavor there is room for the adventurous inventive spirit. But the frontier which has been only glimpsed and which is still to be conquered is that of human relations. How to live with others at home and throughout the world so that science may enrich instead of destroy is a task far more complex than that of shaping a new settlement. For this task the tools needed are not those of the woodsman or hunter, but the skills involved in living peacefully side by side with those whose ways are different from ours. Yours for continued pioneering, C. K. Barron 8
