XL,— Minneapolis, minnesw. Dedication An inspiring speaker showing exceptional school spirit, and a staunch supporter of athletics are only a few of the characteristics which have helped moke this man a tradition at Central in the many years he has been here. His coaching at Shattuck Military Academy won two state and national, indoor and outdoor, track championships. He arrived at .Central in 1929, and since has coached swimming, basketball, track, and cross country, rewarding us with many championship teams. Championships seem to have followed him through the years, as in 1923 he won the Big Ten Conference pole vaulting championship for the University of Minnesota. None of us will forget the many pep talks and the backing he has given us in all school activities. The fact that he will see a job through to its finish is an attribute which is admired by all who know him. For reasons too many to enumerate, we, the class of '56, dedicate our yearbook to you— Wild Bill Hawker. 6-.TG- 4 Contents Appliers of the Hickory....................... 6 Town Meetings ............................. 14 Celebrations ................................. 32 Contests ..................................... 44 Scouts and Trail Blazers...................... 64 Homesteaders ................................. 74 Foreword Pioneers! Pioneers! C! H! S! These words have been echoed through gomes and assemblies since 1929. when the name was first given to us by John E. Mulligan and the NEWS staff. In order to symbolize this theme we have chosen Pioneer Pete as our main character to lead you through the 1956 Centralian. He will help you revisualize some of the outstanding events, bring back some sentimentol memories, and give you a remembrance of Central. 5 Miss Caroline K. Barron Dear Pioneers of 1956: A hundred years ago when Minneapolis was born, pioneering, though a difficult business, was comparatively simple. Carving a village out of the wilderness required strong men and women armed with courage and faith. The village has become a beautiful thriving city but the pioneering is not done. The new frontiers are scientific and social. In automation, in aeronautics, in atomic energy—in every conceivable field of human endeavor there is room for the adventurous inventive spirit. But the frontier which has been only glimpsed and which is still to be conquered is that of human relations. How to live with others at home and throughout the world so that science may enrich instead of destroy is a task far more complex than that of shaping a new settlement. For this task the tools needed are not those of the woodsman or hunter, but the skills involved in living peacefully side by side with those whose ways are different from ours. Yours for continued pioneering, C. K. Barron 8 Mr. William G. Hawker, Assistant Principal To the Members of the 1956 Graduating Class: As the lilacs shed their blooms and the peonies spread their petals to the soft June air, a ■very happy chapter ends for you seniors. Your thoughts then turn to more mature things— careers, jobs and college. Gone forever are the carefree, happy days of high school. Responsibilities and worries can never again be shrugged aside, but must be shouldered. I have great confidence in the class of 1956, and I am proud to be associated with such a fine group of young people who, I am sure, will stand firmly for the finer things in life. W. G. Hawker Mr. Edward Nagel Many students have not had the occasion to have a friendly talk with one of our counselors. The counselors' job is to help and advise the student in making out his school program so that the individual will benefit from his high school education Miss Clare Bell as much as possible. Later, when the seniors begin to wonder about going to college or getting a job, either of these two helpful people will sit down and discuss the problem with the student in order to find the best solution. 9 Cooks MISS INA WAIO, MRS TOVE JACOBSON, MRS. At the very beginning, the staff decided on a Pioneer theme which is effectively used throughout the book. In spite of deadlines, which were always coming up too quickly, the staff was able to meet them without too much difficulty. The results of hard work and the efforts made will be judged by you, the students, as you read the 1956 Centralian. Extra, Extra is what the News Staff echoes every other Wednesday while delivering the Central High News to the various homerooms. At the head of this line are the two co-editors, Joan Larson and Galina Me.nytschenko, and the faculty adviser, Mr. Mulligan. The News brings to the student the highlights of school life that surround him. These include sports activities, assemblies, articles of advice, a gossip column, and jokes. Every year the News Staff presents two assemblies at the beginning of each semester. The purpose of the assemblies is to acquire subscribers for the News. Every student attending Central High School has reason for being proud of its paper. The Central High News has won many awards, both state and national, because of its outstanding quality and form. Spanish Club Christmas cards, stationery, vanilla were some of the shouts of members of the Spanish Club during their, drive throughout the year to acquire money for their biannual trip to Mexico. The persons behind this drive were Douglas Parker, president; Toni Hughes, vice president; Carol Nelson, secretary; Jim Savoie, treasurer; and Mrs. Olson, faculty adviser. The Halloween Disc Hop was given for the student body in hopes of raising more money for the trip. The Spanish Club has many activities throughout the year. The annual Christmas Party is the biggest and most colorful event of the year. At various times during the year, the Spanish Club was visited by visitors from the Spanish speaking lands. German Club Mimes and Mummers To make money for the German Club was the problem before the group under the leadership of Lorine Grosz. They suddenly received a spontaneous idea to sell mistletoe and holly, which paid large dividends in the end. Singing O Tannenbaus and Stille Nacht in the Christmas Assembly and meetings made interesting by students talking to this group were added attractions. The officers of this group are Galina Melnyt-schenko, president; Susan Willis, vice president; Donna Mae McKeone, secretary; and Chuck Lamb, treasurer. How now brown cow? These were the words heard last fall at the tryouts for Central's drama club. Mimes and Mummers. Heading the crusade for new members were the officers, Toni Hughes, president; Diane Davidson, vice president; Yvonne Morrow, secretary; Galina Melnytschenko, treasurer; and Mrs. Townsend, faculty adviser. It was quite on honor to be selected for this group. A UNESCO play was given to recruit the sale of UNESCO stamps. National Forensic League Junior Achievement Speaking contests at other schools and also Student Congresses are only a few of the projects the National Forensic League participates in during the year under the direction of Jenise Schnur, English teacher and Pat Nelson, president. Extemporaneous, oral, and humorous are only a few of the types of speeches the student has to know how to give. One of the ways to get into N.F.L. is to be in Debate and work for the twenty speaking points, which are required for N.F.L. Working on the topic, Resolved: That the Federal Government should guarantee higher education to qualified high school graduates through grants to colleges and universities, for Warren Debate was the biggest affair of the Debate Club. Junior Achievement is organized for the primary purpose of training and education in business. It gives girls and boys experience in producing and selling goods, keeping records, and paying and receiving wages. Each company, sponsored by a local firm in Minneapolis, chooses their officers for the year. They choose a product and a company name, and they decide on wages and commissions. The company starts out the year by selling stock in their company, which will be used for the purchase of raw materials. Through the months they make their products and they sell them. At the end of the year they pay their stockholders their dividends and receive their profits. Row 1: Gvoit, Frodonburg, C. Andorton, Mr. Nagol, C. Notion, J. Notion, Frary. Hall Monitors Library Monitors Hove you got a pass? is usually what you will hear if you try to wander around the halls during first and second lunch periods. This group, under the direction of Miss Kicher, aids students and teachers by keeping all Pioneers on the first floor until the passing bell rings. The restrooms are kept orderly also by this group. Thanks to them we can maintain a student lunchroom free of the guidance of teachers. Pioneers who give up their study hours to assist Mrs. Brice and Miss La Favor are a great contribution to the library. They not only assist the librarians, they check passes, deliver them to study halls, and help students find books and references they need. Always ready and willing to help the ones who seek help, is a fitting motto for this fine group. Row It Heditrom, Morrow, Hedlund. Findorf. Row 2: Modvig. Funt, Jack! Wright, Judy Wright. Leadership, responsibility, and character are also considered. Honor Society Dick Reich, president; Dale Gorman, treasurer; Carl Kyle, vice president; Morlene Chapman, secretary. On the agenda was a Washington-Williamsburg trip during Easter vacation. In order to make money for this trip, the Honor Society sponsored a number of projects such as the following: the sole of peanut crunch, the annual Washington dance, and a rummage sale. Standing: Tom Anderson, treasurer; Diana Davidson, secretary; bob Burnside, sergeant-of-orms; and Jim Swed enborg, vice president. The sale of Homecoming buttons and UNESCO stamps was not the only thing the Student Council, under the direction of Helen Richer, sponsored this year. Santa Anonymous for needy children, decorating Christmas trees, and giving school dances are other things they did. Representatives on the Student Council are elect- ed by the student body. The Student Council elected John Engfer, president; Jim Swedenborg, yice president; Diane Davidson, secretary; Tom Anderson, treasureV; and Bob Burnside, sergeant-at-arms. This was the staff that carried out a very fine program for 1955-56. Row 1: Norris, Burnside, Swedenborg, Miss Richer, Anderson, Von Slyke. Row 2: Logan, Rice, Barbero, T. Hughes, J. Hughes, Burg. Most of the club's energy is spent in teaching girls to work and have fun in a team. Under the excellent guidance of Gwen Froiland, president; Toni Hughes, I.C.C. representative; Peggy Newman, vice president; Joyce Hughes, secretary; Yvonne Morrow, treasurer; and Miss Deans, faculty adviser, Triettes had a highly successful year. The club consists of ten committees, each with its own head, to function the club properly. The Recognition Service began the activities of the year, and Senior Farewell ended them. The activities in between included the sale of jelly for the Y.W.C.A., a tea for the teachers of Central, various speakers, and a dance, The Gobble Bop, which raised money to carry the club through the school year. Hi-Y Christian Fellowship Clean living, service, and brotherhood is the motto of the Hi-Y here at Central. In connection with service the club spent over 500 hours selling Christmas trees for the Y.M.C.A. This was achieved only with the excellent guidance of Bob Alfton, president; Bruce Otto, vice president; Bob Hokan-son, secretary; Jerry Conn, treasurer; and Mr. Davidson, faculty adviser. The Central Hi-Y is divided into three chapters, the Paps, the Rebels, and Phi Sigma Xi. Aside from their many activities, they found time for many parties, dances, and joint meetings with the Y.W.C.A. groups from various schools. The last party of the year was a combined meeting with the Triettes, at which the graduating seniors were honored. Sleigh rides, Christmas caroling, and talent shows are only a few of the activities which the Christian Fellowship Club takes part in under the leadership of Margaret Olson, Spanish teacher. Belonging to C.F. are teenagers who try to teach fellow students the challenge of Christ, Christian living, and Christian service. The officers who lead C.F. are Dave Kersey, president; Shirley Thorne, vice president; Dawn Lindgren, secretary; Carol Lathen, assistant secretary; and Dave Witt, treasurer. Visual Aids Stage Crew A great reward is in store for any boy or girl volunteering for this group under the direction of Mr. Hovey. Splicing film, learning the mechanism of cameras and their operation, removing scratchy noises from audible movies, and repairing breaks in films are a help to Pioneers in future years if they plan on being a motion picture projectionist. To assist the faculty in arranging the stage for all rehearsals and to prepare the stage for approved school functions are two of the main jobs of the stage crew, under the direction of Earl Kyle, manager. Their job, however, also consists of maintaining all equipment in serviceable condition. Members of the stage crew have to have the requirements of honesty and responsibility more than anything else because all prop rooms are under their supervision. The care of the stage and auditorium is also under their management. Row 1: Robichon, Lewis, Wolfe, Needham. Row 2: Holbrook, Carlton, Cooley, Mr. Sondeen, Kyle, McBeth, Hawke. Office Help Red Cross Taking dictation, running errands, putting mail in teachers' boxes, and writing letters are only a few of the services performed by the office help in the counselor's office. The switchboard and detention slips keep the girls in the main office on their toes. Pioneers who give up their study halls to help with the clerical work of Central are a needed asset. To spread good will to all people of other lands is the objective of the Junior Red Cross. With the excellent guidance of the club's president, Carolyn Hymes; vice president, Aija Studans; secretary, Sharon Simonson; treasurer, Bruce Martin; and faculty adviser. Miss Daniels, their purpose this year was reached by the means of gift boxes and a school chest for overseas. The biggest project of the organization for this past year was the March drive. For this occasion arf excellent program was presented before the student body. Every student at Central High is rightly justified in being proud of this program and group. Row I: Simonton. Ham, our banking pig, was awarded to room 307 for their outstanding leadership in banking. All this goes to show is that we have good representation of bonk cashiers in homerooms to help the rooms win. The banking staff encourages saving for future years and expenses and even loans money to people who just seem to forget all the time. Thanks to this wonderful group, under the guidance of Miss Zanger, we can accept letters of gratitude from Farmers and Mechanics. Singing the Guiding Star Carol and While Stars Their Vigil Keep were the two songs the Sophomore Choir sang in the Christmas concert under the direction of Omer Schommer. We have a Sophomore Choir this year that deserves a lot of credit. They are hard working, intelligent, alert, co-operative, and above all very good singers, which is a vital requirement in order to belong to the choir. Orchestra Central Singers One of the highlights of the year for the Central Orchestra was to ploy the accompaniment for the Choir at the Christmas program. The orchestra is a fine organization in which all the members are talented musicians. A complete concert was on the agenda for the spring semester. Select singers make up the organization of Cen-tral Singers, who work entirely free of any super, vision other than their student directors. Dale Roffers, junior, and David Witt, senior. These six teen students work hard in early morning re hearsals to give a polished performance. This group has had the honor throughout the year to sing at many school auditoriums, P.T.S.A. programs, and other outside organizations. Central Singers has helped to make every student's school days at Central favorable. Also, they have brought joy to everyone who hears them. Row 1: Doc kin, Lindgren, Studans, Cornelton, John ton. Choir Sacred and spiritual songs, plus favorite popular numbers are only a few of the varied entertainment which the choir under the direction of Omer Schommer has presented to us this past year. Early mornings and hour after hour of strict practice only brings out half the work it has taken to make such a good choir. As a result of all this practice and concentration, the choir has been rewarded by singing at the Farmers and Mechanics Bank. Also, the choir has made several recordings, that is, not including all the many various types of programs they have presented to us. We are very grateful for the fine entertainment they have given us throughout the past year. belaire, Nelson, Sandbo, Cornellson, Moffett. Row 4: Rasmussen, Keating, Luger, Ross-mon, Newman, Kersey. K’ VVv Homecoming Court 1955 Homecoming, an annual tradition handed down through the years, has become a symbol of fall reunions, football games, and gay festivities. Although a little early this year, September 30, 1955, it created a lot of excitement and anxiety. Queen Dianne, with her four attendants, Barbara, Dawn, Sharon, and Gwen, reigned over our Homecoming Day activities. Even though we didn't Sack the Millers from Washburn, we had a lot of fun ending with our dance in the school lunchroom sponsored by the Student Council. Queen Dianne From the House of Rosedale Barbara Krauss 35 Proyer to the Rain Gods Cheering crowds. Smiling queen Promenade your lady 36 Victory! Victory! C. H. S. These smiling faces are those of our football coaches, and co-captains of the football team. A cake was baked in honor of the team after the football season when, after much hard work, they finished the season with only two losses. They really did a fine job and certainly kept school spirit high. G. Gohde, Mr. Bowman, Mr. Elias, Mr. Vakos, Mr. Swanson, B. Burnside. One of the most recent additions to Central is the baton twirlers, who precede the band in marching routines. Practicing in early morning rehearsals and striving for accuracy are two of the goals which have made this group outstanding. Kneeling: D. Van Slyke, M. Martin, J. Hughes. Standing: D. Rosedale, S. Quinn, C. Robertson. Is everybody happy? These words have echoed through Central's auditoriums for many years. Our peppy cheerleaders, led by Sandy Quinn, cheer our boys on to victory and pep up the team when spirits are low. These energetic girls really keep the school spirit high. In basketball, football, track, hockey, and all sports, the cheerleaders are the teams' inspiration. 37 38 PIONEER PASTIMES “The big doyl “We all need love. Af lostl 'Ohl What a beautiful doll!' Using the theme Night and Day in New York City, the program featured talent from other high schools of the city. Cleo Dockin presided over the tour of day scenes and Toni Hughes acted as a guide on the night life rendezvous. 42 NEWS PROGRAM The News program, one of the most anticipated assemblies of the year, was centered around a T. A wide range of talent was presented including pantomimes, skits, musical numbers, etc. The News program is presented once a semester as an incentive for students to buy the Central High News which is published bi-weekly. 43 Row 1: Stein, Mgr., B. They won five and lost two in tough city competition to finish fourth. Paced by co-captains, Gary Gohde and Bob Burnside, Central won their last four games after losing to the co-cham- pions, Henry and Washburn. However, Roosevelt, the leading team in the city, were held scoreless by the Red and Blue for two periods before the boys finally tired. The performance of Captain Bob Nelson and Frank Nicholas added many points to Central's score. They will be sorely missed, however, with some fine Junior prospects, next year's team promises to be good. The lettermen include: Dickey, Glass, Hoffman, Nelson, and Nicholas. Although they didn't finish too high in the conference standings the Pioneer matmen displayed stamina and a will to win. Don Swanson, in his first year of coaching, gave Central a new theory on wrestling, which resulted in victories over South and Edison. Jerry Larson, holder of the state's indoor mile record, and Dick Torgerson, one of the outstanding broad jumpers of the city, led the team to many dual meet victories. The team lacked individual stars in the other events, which resulted in not placing higher than fourth in state competition. The 1956 track team upheld the fine tradition of Central track history. The members of the cabinet are all good leaders, and direct the various activities that a number of girls participate in. GIRLS' ATHLETICS The job of earning 1,000 points in order to get an All-City emblem is quite a feat, and takes much ambition. The G.A.A. president has earned a star which signifies participation in G.A.A., and being a member of a championship team or an individual winner of a sport. Those girls who have earned 600 points, have a C average, and are good citizens around the school, may receive a Central C. An emblem must really be worked for, and requires an additional 400 points and a C average. Last fall the President, Carol Scribner, and the sport heads gave a brief summary of the sport she directed. The group is under the capable direction of Dorothy Hawker, and Joyce Anderson. tow I: T. Many girls turned out to participate in the round-robin tournament, and two juniors, won the Doubles Championship. They were Barbara Brooks, and Jackie Wetterling. Girls who participated, earned 100 points toward their Central C or emblem. Borbora Brook . Jacki W   rling BASKETBALL Basketball has always been one of the most popular activities and this year was no exception to the rule. There was evidence of much good sportsmanship, and keen competition. The Slippery Six again won the tournament which makes them champions for the third year in a row. Approximately seventy girls turned out, and teams were set up by Jan Schaller to practice and play tournaments on different nights during the week. VOLLEYBALL BOWLING Lots of team work was certainly typical of this well-organized team who won the tournament. This sport requires a lot of skill as well as a quick eye. All girls who participated agreed they had a lot of fun. Jackie Wetterling, who is head of volleyball, put in long hours of work in planning the schedule of games. Bowling has always been a big success here at Central and this year was no exception. A large number of girls participated and worked hafd to improve their averages and skill. They practiced at the 38th and Nicollet Bowling Lanes several nights out of the week in order to improve their ability for the tournament. Row 1: Strom, J. Preiton. Ulrich, Zmuda, McCollini, Burg. The girls worked hard to improve their batting averages and also attended the required number of practices which were needed to obtain the one hundred points toward their Central C. The sport is becoming more and more popular every year. With the coming of spring came golf and much tedious practice in order to earn a coveted place on the team. Team members participated in a weekly tournament with other high schools in the city. In order to acquire one hundred points, one had to attend four out of five practices in the gym. This practice consisted of hitting plastic golf balls from rubber mats across the gym floor. Row 1: T. Hugh !, B Moore. Ulrich, Youngberg. Quinn, B. Rice. Edward , lamb. Ricker, Falkum, Roger .
