KINGS CO RT Four council members represented Central at the annual Minnesota State Student Council Convention held this year at Albert Lea. They returned with ideas for the betterment of our Student Council gained through discussion with students from schools all over the State. Members elected by the student body worked har- moniously with Way'ne Timmerman, presidentg Mike Strandjord, vice-president, Karen Milling, secretary, Dave Hawkinson, treasurer, John Engfer, sergeant-ab armsg and Miss Kicher, faculty adviser to represent students and their views. The Cabinet in action mr ,..,, K Responsible for making improvements in castle life and dealing with problems around the building was the Student Council, Central's legislative body. This service organization, working quietly but efficiently, sponsored social activities which included our Homecoming, Christmas, and Spring Dances. In a more serious aspect, they gained support for our clothing drive and the Santa Anonymous Cam- paign, which furnished gifts at Christmas time for underprivileged children. They also suggested lunch room improvements and sold handbooks and book- covers as a service to students. john SA Dave check assignments Hs. CRUSADERS To spread the spirit of good will and helpfulness to all is the main objective of the Junior Red Cross. Central, only one of the thousands of chapters through- out the world, does its best to carry out this aim. Advised by Miss Legate and Gordon Wilson, presi- dent, the organization, composed of representatives from each homeroom, contributed l6O pairs of mittens from our Christmas Mitten Tree and raised money through the selling of pencils for a Gift Chest to be sent overseas. ORCERER Projects to help them gain a better understanding of scientific principles were the main interest of Sci- ence Club members this year. Led by their ofhcers Mike Stephan, president, Cordan Wilson, and Phil Edwardson, secretary-treasurer, and Miss Korista, advisor, they learn many interesting, helpful, and valu- able facts. They discovered that experimental work can sometimes be dangerous but always fascinating and fun. The Science Club was an excellent supplement to the students' work in class. Row l: Edwardson. On such occasions as Christmas and Easter, con- certs were presented for the school in the auditorium. Wonderful entertainment was also provided when the choir sang exchange concerts with Hopkins and a Minneapolis High School and presented its annual spring concert. As great honor was given a select group of choir members when they had the privilege of singing with other high school choirs at the annual Nl. ll. A. The Club. open to anyone who has taken a year of Spanish. has been selling stationery, vanilla. and Christmas cards as a means of raising part of time funds. A dance. The Starlight Stomp, was also given for the student body. Meeting monthly under the direction of Pat Spencer. president. and Mrs. Olson. adviser. the Club has var- ious parties throughout the year such as the big Christ- mas Party where members illustrated their knowledge of the language by giving a Spanish play. Spanish visitors throughout the year also familiarized the members with the dress and language of the people. The caravan to Mexico, a biannual event for many years. has aided the members understanding and knowledge of Mexico and is certainly a wonderful experience. Rau' 1: tlouchman. Buhrman. Spencer. Students wearing their most colorful socks competed for the prize which was given to the boy and girl with the most unique pair. Pat Spencer, president, and Miss Daniels, adviser, led the girls as they worked on various service projects and planned their many social events, including Christ- mas caroling, a Senior Farewell, and several joint parties with the Hi-Y. An annual event is the International Fair held at Qhe Y.W.C.A. in which each chapter contributes some- thing for sale, and the money is sent over seas. Each summer a Y-Teens Conference is held in which two members of each club in the state participate. This gives the girls a chance to compare the work done by other clubs with that of their own and share their ideas. Row I: Bjerkstrand. Zmuda, Spillane. Leland. Suspense filled the air on the morning of Octo- ber 20, Barb, Heidi, Pat, Betty, and Karen, our five beautiful candidates, came to the stage to await the tense moment that would reveal our queen's identity. ln all her surprise, tears, and graciousness, Karen Mitling received the crown. Our hopes to 6'Cage The Cats were some- what dampened as the game ended with South the victor. Spirits rose, however, as the hour for the big homecoming dance arrived. The feeling of fun and excitement surrounded us on Homecoming morningg as we entered Central's doors, we were greeted by red and blue shaker, the German band playing and a general undercurrent of anticipation dressed in traditional pioneer costumes. The breath-taking Coronation was followed by the awards for the most authentic costumes and longest beards. We then lent an ear to the outstanding talent of Centralls students and faculty. An added feature of our 1954- Homecoming was the dedication and naming of our football field after Joe E. Markley, former football coach in a ceremonious pre- sentation in the auditorium and on the field. Oh, it couldn't be mel . gl!! I 56 CHRISTMAS HIGHLIGHTS The sweet smell of evergreens enthronged us, the caroling groups of the choir inspired us, and the anxiety over the coming holidays was enough to make us burst the last days before vacation. Remember our biggest Christmas package, the band uniforms, and how the newly-clad members helped us get in the Christmas spirit with their con- cert? The traditional choir concert and play were also important. It is so easy for us to think of the material things of Christmas, but the play put us to thinking of the true meaning. Various organizations, such as Triettes, Hi-Y, and Hi-C, helped others enjoy Christmas by carol- ing at old folks, homes and hospitals. The highlights of the Christmas events in the castle was the Mistletoe Twirl, the big Christmas dance where we danced to Nick Huble's band. ,in Y ,L M5 twirl till!!
