THlVfcCtO THE NINETEEN-FIFTY-ONE CENTRALIAN • • • • • , • , i • •. • i ■ • • • i • • • P12UASIIEO KV THE SENIOR C LASS OF CENTRAL IIHpII SCHOOL MINNEAPOLIS. MINNESOTA i MHC CENTRAL (.-51 STUDIOS 2 PUORCCE DEDICATION May wo. I he youth, direct our talents toward the production of a united, peaceful world. zmmmm ■mm ?. ‘K 'r- OOUCtR PRODUCERS 5 The producer's job in any movie is important, for it is he who must be responsible for the success of the entire production. Mr. Blume has striven to make Central the great producer of stars that it is today. The reward for his efforts is his recent recognition in Who's Who as one of the nation's top educators. Mr. Blume, this year's cast salutes you for your part in the production of our movie. (bnJiAJvtj-p'iy The director's position for our movie is filled by Mr. Anderson. He is not only concerned with seeing that the direction of the movie is running smoothly, but also in serving as the studio guard. The many friends he has gained in his two years at Central prove that he is a capable and well-liked director. Mr. Anderson takes his place next to Mr. Blume in directing our movie. Our thanks to you, Mr. Anderson, for a job well done in Central Studios. 6 Mr. Miles Mr. Rohde, Miss Bell Miss Bireline Miss Thompson, Mrs. Brice Our counselor's job, an equally important part of our movie, includes guiding the stars in choosing their courses, finding jobs for them, and conducting the senior college aptitude test and the Kuder vocational test. The art classes teach our actors how to express themselves through the use of the brush and pen. Sketching, illustrations, and commercial art are among the courses offered to the more talented. The library, one of Central's busiest places, is our movie research department. Here our actors find information for any assignment, and a large selection of fiction and periodicals. Music is essential in the production of any movie. Central's music groups furnish the stars with entertainment, and, at the same time, they strive to create an appreciation of good music. 7 Mrs. M. Sellers Mr. J. Mulligan, Mrs. I. Whiting, Miss L. Grosz Miss I. Parked, Mrs. H. Gamble, Mrs. M Adams Miss E. Liskey, Miss L Utley It is through the study of English that Central's stars learn to express themselves accurately and concisely, and prepare themselves to be successful script writers. In addition, by studying the world's ,famed writers and poets, they learn to appreciate the literature of the past and present. After completing a year of sophomore English, they look forward to creative writing, news, and American literature as juniors. The senior stars are kept busy with a year of English literature and Gale essays. Another important contribution to our movie industry is the language department. It helps the stars when on location in faraway lands and in the production of foreign language films. Mr. Kuenster, Miss Lobdell, Mr. Hawker Mr. Krueger, Mr. Nagel, Mr. Addington Mr. Thoreson, Miss Nickerson, Miss Kicher Mr. Hovey, Miss Wilson, Mr. Glenny, Miss Korista, Mr. Peck In the social science classes, our sophomore stars struggle through the Napoleonic Wars and Charlemagne's rule in world history. The juniors learn of the settlement of the West and the cause and result of  he Civil War in American history, and the seniors study American government and our social and economic problems. For our more scientifically inclined, we have courses in physics where our stars learn of energy and its relation to matter; biology, the study of cell structure; botany, the study of plants; and chemistry, the study of the composition and changes of substances. Equally difficult are the courses in mathematics. After a few weeks of geometry or algebra, a star finds that a hexagon is a six-sided figure and that x and y are the two quantities that he's always looking for. In higher mathematics he learns of logarithms and geometric solids. Mr. Mitchell, Mr. Cunningham, Mr. Machula, Mr. Roehning Miss Turnquist, Miss Zanger, Mrs. Thro Mr. Strukel, Mr. Lander Mr. Johnson, Miss Scott The technical side of any movie is important. No production would be a success without the preliminary and final plans for the sets, the assurance that the cameras are in working order, and without the countless other details that are essential for a smooth production. It is the job of Central's men of industry to fit themselves for these important tasks. Since the production of movies is big business in the United States, it is essential that the business side of it be handled with efficiency and accuracy. Our executives, office clerks, and secretaries of tomorrow train themselves by typing the many scripts for our movie. The shorthand, typing, and business courses are essentials that also can be used outside the business world. Miss Legate, Miss Daniels Mrs. Klein, Miss Morse Miss Slocum, Mrs. Hawker Mr. Markley, Mr. Hardy Costumes are an important part of a finished production. In the Home Economics department, our designers learn the essentials of correct fitting and careful workmanship. The cooking classes not only give the stars a chance to snack between scenes, but also teach them nutrition and home management. The nurse and the visiting teacher are two members of the faculty who see that the old adage, The show must go on is carried out. The job of the stuntman in a movie is both dangerous and exciting; and before anyone can accept such a position, he must go through grueling physical tests. An example of these is the tests given to our stuntmen in the Physical Education courses. The courses also include training in the various sports. They are open to all members of the class. 11 No movie could be a success without a staff to handle the bookkeeping and the clerical work. Our office staff, composed of Mrs. Faughnder, Miss Hanson, and Mrs. Sutherland, are well-known for their accuracy, friendliness, and sense of humor. Mrs. M. Sutherland, Faughnder Mrs. Wald and staff Lunch period The lunchroom is the busiest set in Central, for every student is there at least once a day. Our lunchroom staff performs a great service to the well-being of our stars by providing them with appetizing and nutritious food. Miss S. Hanson, Mrs. D. SCENES 13 IIOMECOMIXJp at our homecoming program. Queen Audrey ond her attendant — Shirley Hallin, Marilyn Stiles, Nancy Carey, and Jeon Paulson. This year Central Studios produced one of the lot's most lavish extravaganzas — the 1950 Homecoming. All studio personnel watched the big scene breathlessly as four charming attendants came slowly onto the set followed by our lovely queen, Audrey Sather. Queen Audrey, in her regal splendor, outshined the spots as she was crowned. Her court entertained her after the ceremonies. The evening's double feature, Settle the West , shot on the Nicollet Field set; and the Homecoming Dance, shot on the home lot were the hits of the season. LIFE WITH FATHER FIRST ROW: Donovan, Goodell, Evan , Sandberg, Rallit, Mr . Adams, Dahle. SECOND ROW; Homines , Grammos, Horbcrg, Wilson, Hozzard, E. Anderson, Cooper, Walker. With a damnation and a What's wrong Clare, Father and Mother with their four boys, their numerous maids, friends, relatives, and doctors set off the 1951 class play, Life with Father. For six weeks previous to opening night, May 18, diligent practice could be heard from the auditorium. Calls such as Harlan, you're on, from the prompter Janice and Have to be louder, from Coach Adams and Where's my popsicle? from the various cast members as they come off stage were proof of the hard work put into this production within our big production. Father Mother Clarence John Whitney Harlan Mary Cora Rev. Historical accuracy is one of the musts for a 5A movie, so it is to the World History groups that directors turn for help on foreign films. Questions on sound effects and color combinations find quick answers by mathematical processes in the physics laboratory. The typewriter, the adding machine, the comptometer, and the dictaphone are essential equipment, but even more essential are the accurate, speedy operators. A sweet soft voice is an admirable thing in women, said Shakespeare. And just as necessary is clear, forceful speech for everyone who appears on screen and radio. Behind the closed and locked doors, the Centralian Staff worked secretly and diligently, combining new ideas with tradition in an effort to make this year's production a winner in its field. Amid the noisy clatter of the ancient typewriter and the lusty shouts of Knock it off! Mr. Melvyn Johnson, the director of this production, attempted to instruct his student underwriters. Assisting Mr. Johnson was our Editor-in-Chief, Jane Thunn, and her two assistants, Ramona Everson and Athene Rallis. CHOI It One of the most select groups on the lot is the choir which gives us that bit of Heaven which we hove on eorth — musk. By means of the many requested loan contracts, the Central Choir has proven again and again that musk hath charms. These tolented stors and starlets have made academy award scenes in many of our movies. Their public appearonces and commercial record albums ore two of the best advertising mediums for the studio. Two annual evening concerts ore given each year by the choir. The Christmas Concert is always free, but the Spring Concert is a moneymaking venture. The oscar for their efforts will come next year when the combined choirs of the city's studios will sing two evening concerts with the world renowned Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra. They will present the Messiah by Handel. CENTRAL SINGERS FIRST ROW: Dohle, Oirector; Schueth, RofFers, Tighe. SECOND ROW: Ronshaugen, Schuller, Kompf, Selander, Yaunick. THIRD ROW: Spong, Net . A. Schires, G. Schires, Stroh, K. Petenon. Although this group is only two years old, it has gained fame by singing all over the city. It is unique because it is the only all star and starlet activity on the studio lot. With Johannes Dahle wielding the baton, the Central Singers have added their talents to many productions. In this $tepping-stone toward the first choir, the fundamentals of music: breath control, posture, enunciation, and correct tones are being taught. This fine training is received not only in the Girls' Glee Club but also in the second choir, the extras in our musical productions. STAGE CREW LEFT TO RIGHT: B. Johnson, R. Hall, Henslin, Minihtk, Dietz, Gree, Enke, langlois, Bridgeman. Dim the lights! Start the cameras rolling! Cut! These are the familiar phrases with which Christie Enke and Bob Hall, stage directors, give the signal to proceed. With these words another movie is underway. O. T. C. Pederson, Oronen, Wilczok, Thomas, Evans. SECOND ROW: Manuel, Wisli, Cullen, Quinn, Dordis, McArdlo, Bauman, Honson. THIRD ROW: Jackson, Kersten, O'Brien, Pcohl, Brandt, Ellingen, Quam, J. Pederson. FOURTH ROW: Gehring, Cotton, Monge, J. Anderson, Spong, lindmeier. Colemon. FIFTH ROW: Boulden, Speliopoulis, Wodrich, LaBelle, Helling, Smith. SOI’IIOMOIt E SQUAD FIRST ROW: Throndsen, Stoopes, N. Berg, Quenroe, .Coughlin, Eide, Monson, Herber, Forsberg. FOURTH ROW: Thoreson, Webb, Bauman, Engman, Condon, Jacobsen, Rckow Rodberg. FIFTH ROW: Oakes, Reed, Sollors, Phillips, Moore, Schires, Andreas. Varsity coach Markley has his eyes on a number of these apprentice stuntmen, who, under Whitey Thoreson's direction, produced four wins out of six games. Many of these boys are Joe's hope for copping another gridiron Oscar for the future season. Led by Pederson, Cullen, Quinn, Dordis, and McArdle, Central's offensive-minded eleven piled up points almost at will. Deadly passing by Cullen kept the opponent's defense well spread, while the snake-hipped, speed demon Dardis sped through their line for long gains. The powerful Quinn always acquired that yard or two, and McArdle's tricky reverses completely baffled Central's foes. Thomas Blanchard VARSITY BASKETBALL FIRST ROW: Coach Thoreson, I. Jackson, R. Cullen, R. Scanlon, D. Quinn, J. Rodberg, A. Levitt, J. Patzwald. SECOND ROW: R. Dunn, R. Koslic, O. Thomas, D. Magnuson, J. Blanchard, R. Bauman, D. Quam, E. Henslin. The cards were stacked against the small but potent Pioneer bas-keteers who dropped only one game but lost the City crown on a percentage basis to Edison. Three Central dribblers acquired All-City honors: John Blanchard, Ollie Thomas, and John Patzwald who will lead next year's squad to greater heights. Although the season locked material success in the won-lost department, these boys will be a valuable asset to the varsity team. SOI IIO IORE BASKETBALL FIRST ROW: R. Jacobson. E. Failor, R. Newbauer, R. Judy, G. Moore, P. Rickert. J. Jackson. SECOND ROW: Coach Hawker, T. Luna-berg, M. Heil, S. Ajax, J. Bold, N. Hanson, R. Throndson, R. Siemens. mm BASEBALL FIRST ROW: Patzwald, Dardis, Werth, L. Jackson. SECOND ROW: Manuel, Lundberg, Gaines, Owens, D. Quinn, D. Johnson. THIRD ROW. Mr. Hardy, N. Hanson, Abrahamson, Blanchard, Quom, Freund, Scanlon, J. Quinn. Coached successfully by Marv Hardy, the Baseball Team smashed to a Twin City championship last year. Carl Thomas, '50, pitched a no-hitter when Central copped the playoff for the crown. Several of the champs, including red hot John Blanchard, are back this season to help the Pioneers repeat for first place honors. Blanchard slides under the throw to Dunn. TRACK FIRST ROW: Wallace, Carmichael, Cullen, Burkstrand, T. Pederson, Wodrich, Ryan. SECOND ROW: Witti, Guenther, Adams, Byrne, limond, Judy. THIRD ROW: Hammer, Hansen, Magnusen, Newbauer, Bakke, Hesse, Boyle. FOURTH ROW: Smithe, Bulin, Quenroe, Webb, Horstman, Mindrum, Sorenson. FIFTH ROW: lanning, Pierro, Schires, Dennis Monge, Peohl, Dean Monge, Mr. Hawker. Our spirited Track Team of 1951 is considered one of the finest products of Bill Hawker's coaching. Paced by such standouts as Clayt Burkstrand and Bob Cullen, Central's Cinder Beaters will prove a serious contender for first place honors. Hawker primes his speed merchant, Burkstrand. Cullen goes up and over. CROSS COUNTRY FIRST ROW: Byrne, Brown, Wilson, Sorenson. SECOND ROW: Hawker, Martinson, Ryan, Brush. Paced by Captain Paul Ryan, who ran seventh in the State finals, our Hurrying Harriers finished in third place for their city competition. HOCKEY FIRST ROW: Spong, Kotsonas, Delano, D. Nielson, Bolin, Condon. SECOND ROW: Miner, Hall, Wallentine, Brandt, latterell, I. Nielson, Sandberg, Logelin, Sandmeyer. Though fighting all the way, our Blademen had their pre-seaSon hopes for another championship shattered, winning two games, losing three, and tieing two. The underclassmen on the Hockey squad showed promise of better things for 1952. • Featherstone slams one 250 yards, Tanker Wesslinq home first Dunn serves an ace Pucksters near a goal FIRST ROW: R. Berg, Well , Boulden. SECOND ROW: W. Wells, Brown, Stoll. Fourre, J. Honsen. THIRD ROW: Mr. Roehn-ing, T. Podcrson, Westling, Buck, Beckley. The Pioneer Swimming Team splashed to third place honors for the city; losing only three times while gaining nine victories. Although many stars will be lost by graduation, all spots can be capably filled for next year's team. WRESTLING FIRST ROW: Ecklund, Fronton, McCall. SECOND ROW: Mongo, Manual, Williams, Joseph, Hamer. THIRD ROW: link, Nielson, Crakes, Oakes, Wiebe, Mr. Hardy. 50 Although riddled with injuries and lacking experience, our grapplers limped home with four victories and three defeats. Composed almost entirely of sophomores and juniors, the wrestling team surprised Coach Hardy with this unexpected record. Mr. Ihorcson, Swedbcrg, Dohtc, Wilson, Dunn, Fast, J. Rodborg, Roach. Rudquist, R. Johnson. The Pioneer Tennis outfit has been tagged by rivals as the team to beat for this year's tennis crown. Outstanding are Dick Johnson and Bob Dunn, considered tops in the city. Another Central championship is impending. GOLF m Mr. Addington, V. Olson. Led by Vic Olson, the only returning letterman, the 1951 divot diggers have high aspirations for their city league competition. Promising material and a favorable schedule, plus Coach C. T. Addington's excellent instruction, all point the way for their success. G. A. A. FIRST ROW: Mi  Slocum, Glenny, Palmquist, Hagen. SECOND ROW: Min Nickerson, Stoecker, Hage, Rallis, Mrs. Hawker. THIRD ROW: Jacobsen, Anderson, Masters, Corcoran. FOURTH ROW: Hanson, Majerus, Hazzard, Hullctf, Lamb. The Girls' Athletic Association helps to keep the stars and starlets of Central Studio in trim for their leading roles. This department of our studio offers various sports. Under the capable supervision of our athletic directors, Miss Slocum and Mrs. Hawker, the girls enjoy basketball, volleyball, biking, hiking, tennis, swimming, badminton, bowling, and golf. Along with this pleasant recreation they also learn good sportsmanship. These girls are participating in the G.A.A. volleyball tournament. BADMINTON Athene Rallis and Bev Palmquist. The badminton champs of Central Studio this year are Beverly Palmquist and Athene Rallis. They fought hard for points but were eliminated in the Twin-City play-offs. SWIMMING FIRST ROW: Taylor, Jensen, Perron, N. Benton, Douglas, longe. SECOND ROW: Sundby, Crossen, Meixner, Amundson, Lamb, Miller. 54 The mermaids of our movie industry have appeared in many of our aqua reviews. They gain skill in diving and varying strokes by the practices and meets held in Bryant's pool. TEMIS FIRST ROW: E. Anderson, Bjerke, Uroshi, Lange, Crosson, Duray, Hage, Polmquist, Monroe, Von Galder, Hazzard. SECOND ROW: Horton, Findell, J. Peterson, Kruse, Moneyhun, P. Miller, Sundby, Amundson, Hagen, Hullett, Lamb, Masters, S. Miller, Meixner. The weatherman gave the tennis enthusiasts strong competition even to the point of forcing them to practice indoors. In spite of this, stiff competition will be offered by the champs Bev Polmquist, singles, and Pat Lamb and Phyllis Hullett, doubles. GOLF FIRST ROW: Sundby, Masters, S. Miller, Findell, J. Peterson, Duray, Van Galder, Longe, Bjerke, Amundson, Hullett. SECOND ROW: Merrifield, Urashi, Monroe, Lamb, Hage, Polmquist, Hagen, Ruhnke, N. Benson, Kruse, Moneyhun, Horton, Crosson, Meixner, E. Anderson, Connie Bjerke. Learning how to hold a golf club properly, how to swing, and how to stand are all parts of learning how to play golf. Twelve girls in this picture were chosen as the lucky ones to swing golf clubs for Central on the city courses. 55 T-T- Roger Wilton HAL- TRAL Carol Foo Arlys Kolteth YAH!CENTRAL! I MEMOIIIAM Even in the best and gayest movie, there comes a time of sadness . . . of departure ... a time when a well-liked member of the cost must take his leave and move to a bigger show. Dick Gaalaas was the type of performer who somehow always seemed able to please his audience. He possessed a rare gift which enabled him to fill other people with his own happiness. The joy Dick felt in living and playing his part was shown by the fine performances he added to the movie. He was an honor student, a member of the Hi-Y, stage crew, sophomore basketball team, and an actor in various other scenes of this production known as June '51, Central. And now, this star performer has left our cast . . . our movie is completed . . . the actors go their separate ways . . . taking with them sweet memories. 80 • • v-.r STARLETS 81 IIMOIK STAUIJ TS ROOM 101 FIRST ROW: Mil Daniels, Almberg, Moffett, Sarvela, Bathurst. September 13— Our first football game. An enthusiastic crowd cheered Central when it defeated Marshall 21-0. September 20 — News assembly which took Central to Hollywood for a fine performance. October 16 — The results of the homecoming queen and her attendants buzzed around the school. October 20 — Settle the West , the homecoming theme in the program. The football game at Nicollet Park and the dance afterward at Central. October 25 — A vacation while the teachers participated in the Business Education Day. November 15 —The annual leadership conference was attended by eighty-two students. Mr. Blume was the speaker. November 17 — The Twin City football championship game at Memorial Stadium. Students sat surrounded by snowflakes, but only to see a sad defeat, 20-7, in Washington's favor. December 2 — As an out-of-school event many students attended the C.I.C. (Central Inter-Club) formal at the Columbia Chalet. December 7 — Our senior class officers were elected. First a preview of the candidates by fellow students, and next, the election. December 14 —The Mimes and Mummers put on the annual Christmas play, Why the Chimes Rang. It seemed a little early to be in the Christmas spirit. December 23 — Last day of school before vacation — and only two days until Christmas! December 26 — The beginning of senior graduation pictures. Until they were returned, everyone was held in suspense. January 8 — School resumed after vacation. January 15 —The date is uncertain, but about this time the thirty-five-year-old Girls' Club was discontinued because of lack of interest. January 23 — The school strike began, and the new semester-exam program was never able to prove its efficiency. Neither those who left their books in the lockers, nor those who took them home admitted to much studying. February 14 —The second attempt to get school under way after the strike proved successful. Tests still stared us in the face. March 6 — Assembly featuring the completion of the painting job at Central. Next day the News staff gave an assembly with television as the theme. March 14 — Centralian staff began their subscription drive with an assembly portraying the silent movie with in-between-acts of talent. April 20 — Spring party. May 18 — The class play, Life with Father. June 1 — Senior program comprised of senior talent. The senior Prom held at the Calhoun Beach Club from nine to twelve o'clock. June 5 — Senior Banquet. June 10 — Baccalaureate. Now everyone is sure that the time is nearing. June 14 — Commencement. The grand finale of Central High School when all the stars step out for bigger and better contracts. Costumes for our next musical. Our equipment is kept in order by skilled workmen. Veni, vidi, vici.' Figuring our production costs. FIVDEK Adams. Robert 3708 10th Ave. S.
